Santos Roman Arrested After Stepson Allegedly Brought Heroin To School Show And Tell

04/10/12 07:31 PM ET AP

Santos Roman
Santos Roman's five-year-old stepson allegedly brought in 50 packets of heroin to show and tell.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A 5-year-old boy found dozens of bags of heroin inside a jacket he had taken to school and showed them to his kindergarten classmates, the school superintendent said Tuesday.

Bridgeport Superintendent Paul Vallas said he believes the boy took his stepfather's jacket to school on Monday without knowing the drugs were inside it.

"Children bring to school what they find at home," he said.

Police have told the Connecticut Post the boy took 50 packets of heroin out when it came time for a show-and-tell presentation, but Vallas said the boy only waved the heroin around at his cubicle. Police did not respond to messages seeking comment Tuesday.

The boy's stepfather, 35-year-old Santos Roman, went to the school and recovered the jacket, but police had already seized the drugs, officials said. He was arrested when he returned to the school after apparently discovering the heroin was missing, Vallas said.

Roman was arrested on risk of injury to a minor and drug charges. He appeared Tuesday in Bridgeport Superior Court and was ordered held on $100,000 bail. He wasn't available to comment from jail, and there was no phone number listed for his home address.

The Department of Children and Families placed the boy in the custody of his grandmother, even though his mother went to the school to take him home, Vallas said.

Vallas praised the reactions of the teacher who initially noticed the drugs, worth about $500 on the street, and of others involved in the response.

"I think everybody operated like clockwork," he said.

A few things in this story I would like cleared up. The kid is five years old so I find it hard to believe he and his dad wear the same size jacket. But, if the kid wasn't wearing the coat... why did he take it to school?
10:15 AM on 04/14/2012
Knowing kids...it is not hard to believe that this little boy wanted to wear the step dad's jacket even if it didnt fit. Maybe it was a special one..sports team etc that the kid liked. Who knows but I agree the story should have addressed that. Surprising what goes on in the mind of a 5 year old.
12:13 PM on 04/14/2012
The article clearly states that the child was intentionally bred by a DEA agent as a subcategory agent informant PRIOR to the relationship with the mom. That's why he's a stepchild. Can't you guys read?

Why are we not using our troops for something good, like wiping out the poppy fields in Afghanistan? It seems to me a napalm pass over each field would do the trick. Make sure to get those who pay the poppy farmers to grow this junk too
10:17 AM on 04/14/2012
I think it is a good idea on one hand but I also firmly believe that what goes on in another country is just not our business. Afghanistan is not part of the US. If they want to grow dope that is their business, not ours. When our country figures out a way to eliminate our growing meth problem, then we might be entitled to judge another country on their drug policies.

Good post.. I agree.
01:20 PM on 04/14/2012
On one hand I agree with you that we do not need to be the world's police. On the other hand, we are being blamed for the 44 times more heroin that has come from Afghanistan, since our troops arrived years ago. As long as we are getting the blame and we are there already, one more job is not going to be too hard of a task, even though there are many many poppy fields to burn. It may also create better relations with the countries, for instance Russia being one, who are suffering from the terrible increased availability of Afghan grown Heroin. The heroin that probably finds it's way to the USA anyway. Therefore needs to be dealt with regardless.

Lets hope that CPS moniters this child. You are going to have an extremely angry step dad when he returns home, I hope he does not take out his anger on this 5 yr old child ,who made an honest mistake , and have no clue of what he carried.

I don't think he will be home for a long while, and as far as the Mother, she should be charged with child indangerment, for allowing this to go on in their home.
