Newt Gingrich Check Bounced For Utah Filing Fee: Report

Posted: Updated:

Newt Gingrich's campaign bounced a check for $500 to qualify for the Utah ballot, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

The check was deposited in March but bounced and the campaign has not responded, according to the report. The campaign has until April 20 to pay the fee or Gingrich won't be on the June 26 ballot.

Gingrich acknowledged Sunday on Fox News that the campaign was "slightly less" than $4.5 million in debt. He acknowledged that he had to dip into his own money to fund the campaign.

"We are operating on a shoestring," Gingrich said.

The Huffington Post's Christina Wilkie has reported extensively on Gingrich's history of debts, lawsuits and bankruptcies.

UPDATE: Gingrich responded to the bounced check Wednesday, saying the bank account had been closed. "That check was drawn in December," he said after a campaign event in Delaware, according to CNN. "The account actually was closed by the time they processed it. It wasn't a question of money--that particular bank account was closed."
