Argentina Baby Alive After 12 Hours In Morgue

04/11/12 06:02 PM ET AP

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A mother in Argentina says she fell to her knees in shock after finding her baby alive in a coffin in the morgue nearly 12 hours after the girl had been declared dead.

Analia Bouter named her newborn Luz Milagros, or "Miracle Light." The tiny girl, born three months premature, was in critical but improving condition Wednesday in the same hospital where the staff pronounced her stillborn on April 3.

The case became public Tuesday when Rafael Sabatinelli, the deputy health minister in the northern province of Chaco, announced in a news conference that five medical professionals involved have been suspended pending an official investigation.

Bouter told the TeleNoticias TV channel in an interview Tuesday night that doctors gave her the death certificate just 20 minutes after the baby was born, and that she still hasn't received a birth certificate for her tiny girl.

Bouter said the baby was quickly put in a coffin and taken to the morgue's refrigeration room. Twelve hours passed before she and her husband were able to open the coffin to say their last goodbyes.

She said that's when the baby trembled. She thought it was her imagination – then she realized the little girl was alive and dropped to her knees on the morgue floor in shock.

A morgue worker quickly picked up the girl and confirmed she was alive. Then, Bouter's brother grabbed the baby and ran to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, shouting for the doctors. The baby was so cold, Bouter said, that "it was like carrying a bottle of ice."

A week later, the baby is improving. Bouter said she still has many unanswered questions about what happened. She said she had given birth normally to four other children and doesn't understand why doctors gave her general anesthesia this time. She said she also doesn't know why she wasn't allowed to see her baby before it was put into a coffin.

She said she had to insist on going to the morgue's refrigeration room, where she brought her sister's cellphone to take a picture of the newborn for the funeral. Her husband struggled to open the lid, and then stepped aside to let her see inside.

"I moved the coverings aside and saw the tiny hand, with all five fingers, and I touched her hand and then uncovered her face," she said in the TeleNoticias interview. "That's where I heard a tiny little cry. I told myself I was imagining it – it was my imagination. And then I stepped back and saw her waking up. It was as if she was saying `Mama, you came for me!'

"That was when I fell to my knees. My husband didn't know what to do. We were just crying and I laughed and cried, cries and laughter. We must have seemed crazy."

She says the family plans to sue the staff at Hospital Perrando in the city of Resistencia for malpractice, and still wants answers. But they've been focused for now on their little girl, whom she described as amazingly healthy despite being born after just 26 weeks of gestation. So far, she hasn't needed oxygen or other support commonly provided to preemies, she said.

"I'm a believer. All of this was a miracle from God," she told Telam, Argentina's state news agency.

Uhh... I find that god and religion seem to be a crutch for weak minded and uneducated people to fall back on when they don't understand something. "I don't know how to explain this therefore = god, miracle etc". I also find it extremely insulting that instead of people praising the parents and morgue worker who saw the girl in time to save her life people praise god who as I understand it would have had to set up the situation for her to be there in the first place. People see what they want to see. You see god saving her, I see god making her suffer unnecessary unbearable pain for many hours. Why doesn't god use his magic powers to instantly save the thousands of innocent children starving to death in Africa? Or better yet not let them stave to death in the first place. That would be a miracle. Miracles are a direct ratio to education. Miracles to educated people = easily explained. Miracles to uneducated people = god. The more educated you are of the sciences the less "miracles" happen.

Then God has a sick sense of humor......So your theory is that God made sure she was born too early, then made sure she was pronounced dead, and in the end that she survived.....Damn, im glad I don't have to deal with your God...He sounds like a massive tool.

May I just mark the irony that the video included in this article is not available in my country... which is Argentina? Jeesh.

By putting a alive baby in the freezer for twelve hours?

I checked a couple comments and I am still puzzled as how God have to do with anything of this... There´s a medical explanation on why this could have happened. It has to do with problems and specifics about babies being born before term...

I want to start off by saying; this story is beautiful. It's amazing the power of a mother's intuition.
Secondly, I want to know what is wrong with people these days? Some people have taken the time to read this beautiful and amazing story, then they take the time to read all the comments.. only to then take the time to attack, interrogate, and argue with other people commenting because of their religious beliefs. Why do we take the time put of our day to harass people because of what they believe in, or to try and make them feel ignorant or wrong because of their beliefs? Everyone has their own opinion on things and religion, and I will never understand why people think that it is their duty to question people because of those beliefs? Why not just read this beautiful story, and comment on what you thought of it, or maybe your theory on what the doctors were up to and have a discussion with other about that. Why scroll through looking for comments that contains some kind of religious belief and attack it? Why do we care so much what others believe that we need to do that kind of stuff? Are they hurting you because of their belief? NO! If someone wants to thank God for something they believe was a miracle, then why argue with them?

Praise God! God IS still in the healing and miracle working! Miracles and healings were not only back in the Bible days! He is still working miracles and healing and blessing His Children!
Anyone who cant see this miracle, I am sorry to say, has blinded eyes! If so, I pray God opens your eyes and heart today! Thank you Lord for the miracle of this precious baby!
I know He opened my eyes in 1987-and He did so, because I asked Him to reveal to me if He was real, and He did so- just by my asking!! And I am so thankful!

Why do I know we will ALL be ok in the end? All our circumstances, all our troubles, concerns and worries? This story is a great example of WHY: Because Creator told us to do something and if He is telling us to do it, we can be confident that He is setting the example first (aside from what any apocalyptic preconceived ideas tell us we should think): Romans 12:21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with GOOD!." Mom's - babies? Oh yeah, THAT is some kind of good, ya'all.

"If we long to believe that the stars rise and set for us, that we are the reason there is a Universe, does science do us a disservice in deflating our conceits? For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan

So by posting this Carl Sagan quote I'm assuming you're saying we should accept the pure scientific reality of this and the fact that scientifically a person can be technically dead at the moment yet come back vs. believing there is some supernatural meaning or intent behind this? If so, I agree.

Science has been proving itself WRONG all of my 50+ years. Nothing but theory's. The Theory of a creator or master designer is not out of the question. I think The Creator may have used science and evolution to do his work for him. Leaving us to wonder and figure it all out. Maybe when you finally figure it all out is when the Creator takes you? The final laugh, jokes on you mortal.............lol

southboundcowboy I believe you are absolutely correct...
04:49 PM on 04/14/2012
You're saying two conflicting things. You say science has been proving itself wrong all of your life and is nothing but theories. But then you say The Creator uses science and evolution to do his work for him.

Perhaps the hospital refused to allow the mother to see her child before 12 hours had passed because they intended to harvest the baby's organs and they stupidly assumed that since being so premature she would not survive after being in cold storage for so long. But their evil plan did not work since the matter of life or death is in the hands of a much higher power. Wonderful story and lesson on how NO ONE CAN REALLY GET AWAY WITH DOING EVIL.

The chill may have saved her life. Slowed down all body functions perhaps?

Of course it is highly possible that the baby WAS technically dead. This isn't the first time and won't be the last time that someone was considered technically dead, pronounced dead, then some time later the signs of life returned. How many times have we heard the stories about people who technically died on the operating table yet revived themselves. What happened in this case is it sounds like the hospital staff was in too big of a hurry to whisk the "dead" baby away and stick her in the morgue. Normally the doctors or surgeons will perform more than one test for death and space them a little apart to make sure.
