What does New York sound like? Is it a clanging? A rhythmic cacophony? A deep, thumping through-the-walls heartbeat? Is it the tinny sounds that streams out of bars downtown? The distant churning of passing subway cars? Does the pavement have its own sound under your feet? Can you hear something in the emptiness of Coney Island's seascape? If you were the luckiest guy on the Lower East Side, wouldn't you, too, write a song about it?
Here at HuffPost New York we wanted to compile a little list of some great songs about New York spots that did not include Frank Sinatra or Billy Joel (sorry, boys). It's a great city, and the greatest acts on Earth have continuously paid tribute to it over the years. So star it, take it with you as you roam the city, and ENJOY!
(And no doubt you will feel certain deserving songs were unfairly left out of our collection, so tell us what you'd like to see on our next playlist!)
