NASA Global Warming Stance Blasted By 49 Astronauts, Scientists Who Once Worked At Agency

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden

Is NASA playing fast and loose with climate change science? That's the contention of a group of 49 former NASA scientists and astronauts.

On March 28 the group sent a letter to NASA administrator Charles Bolden, Jr., blasting the agency for making unwarranted claims about the role of carbon dioxide in global warming, Business Insider reported.

"We believe the claims by NASA and GISS [NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies], that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data," the group wrote. "With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled."

The group features some marquee names, including Michael F. Collins, Walter Cunningham and five other Apollo astronauts, as well as two former directors of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The letter included a request for NASA to refrain from mentioning CO2 as a cause of global warming in future press releases and websites. The agency's "Global Climate Change" webpage says that "Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived "forcing" of climate change."

Of course, NASA isn't the only government agency to finger carbon dioxide as a key culprit in global warming.

The EPA website says that "Increasing levels of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere since pre-industrial times are well-documented and understood." It goes on to say that "The atmospheric buildup of CO2 and other greenhouse gases is largely the result of human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels."

What does NASA say?

“NASA sponsors research into many areas of cutting-edge scientific inquiry, including the relationship between carbon dioxide and climate," the agency's chief scientist, Dr. Waleed Abdalati, told The Huffington Post in an email. "As an agency, NASA does not draw conclusions and issue 'claims' about research findings. We support open scientific inquiry and discussion...If the authors of this letter disagree with specific scientific conclusions made public by NASA scientists, we encourage them to join the debate in the scientific literature or public forums rather than restrict any discourse.”

Editor's note: We believe it's newsworthy when 49 former NASA scientists and astronauts pen a letter to the agency -- or to anyone -- about climate change. But what really raised temperatures is when we asked our readers to weigh in. We've removed the question because HuffPost is not agnostic on the matter. Along with the overwhelming majority of the scientific community (including 98% of working climate scientists), we recognize that climate change is real and agree with the agencies and experts who are concerned about the role of carbon dioxide.

"With hundreds of well known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership"........

And not ONE name was mentioned.

After looking at the list of those who signed this letter:

- The leader of this effort,. Harrison Schmitt, believes this is all a communist plot.
- Most are long time former employees of NASA, many of whom were from the shuttle program which has been shut down.

It is fair to accuse me of speculation, but I fully beleive that many of those who sign this letter have a bigger issue with resources being directed away from manned space exploration.

I have to wonder just how many of these "49 former NASA scientists and astronauts" have actually authored or co-authored any peer reviewed research into the issue of global warming since designing rockets and piloting them into space does not make one a scientific authority on this issue. Here's another item to consider: NASA currently has around 18,000 employees so a joint letter signed by 49 former employees just isn't very impressive. By the way, if anyone here knows of a peer reviewed study into the issue of global warming done by any of these people, then please post a link to it. I would love to read it.

This article is a year old. Perhaps with an extra year of crushing drought, high temperature records falling everywhere, unprecedented storm damage in the U.S., Hurricane Sandy, and other bits of evidence, the Astronauts have changed their minds. Since Republicans in general live in an evidence-free zone, however, I'm not holding my breath.

Most of the signatories were neither astronauts nor scientists (and none were climate scientists). The author of this article -- David Freeman -- did not do due diligence before publishing this article, and neither did HuffPo.

The Pentagon: Global Warming Is Real and a Destabilizing Force

Pentagon Quadrennial Defense Review (2010):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Climate-related changes are already being observed in every region of the world, including the United States and its coastal waters. Among these physical changes are increases in heavy downpours, rising temperature and sea level, rapidly retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, lengthening growing seasons, lengthening ice-free seasons in the oceans and on lakes and rivers, earlier snowmelt, and alterations in river flows.

Assessments conducted by the intelligence community indicate that climate change could have significant geopolitical impacts around the world, contributing to poverty, environmental degradation, and the further weakening of fragile governments. Climate change will contribute to food and water scarcity, will increase the spread of disease, and may spur or exacerbate mass migration.

While climate change alone does not cause conflict, it may act as an accelerant of instability or conflict, placing a burden to respond on civilian institutions and militaries around the world. In addition, extreme weather events may lead to increased demands for defense support to civil authorities for humanitarian assistance or disaster response both within the United States and overseas.

Astroturfer Alert:

"Smith-Mike" is yet another incarnation of anti-climate science propagandist Larry Schneiderwind of Plano TX.

Gee, what would motivate Larry Schneiderwind to create hundreds of HuffPo sock puppets and relentlessly post anti-climate science propaganda from them?

Tough one.

Astroturfing:

"The anonymity of the web gives companies and governments golden opportunities to run astroturf operations: fake grassroots campaigns, which create the impression that large numbers of people are demanding or opposing particular policies. This deception is most likely to occur where the interests of companies or governments come into conflict with the interests of the public."

The molecular weight for CO2 is 44, for Oxygen-O2, it is 32; for Nitrogen-N2, it is 28; for CH4, it is 16; for H2 O, it is 18. Does it have no meaning for scientists of climate change? Which gases from them are lighter? Let suggest that we have two parcel of air. In one parcel it will be
greenhouse gases like CO2 and N2 O and in another parcel greenhouse gases like CH4 and H2 O in equal concentration.
Question is “will the influence of these gases in both parcels the same in abilities of these parcels to go UP or DOWN, especially if concentration of CH4 and H2 O could be in reality many times bigger than CO2 and N2O?Yes, all of them will trap infrared radiation of different bands, but only CH4, H2 O will help convection forces to bring a parcel of air UP, because these gases are lighter than CO2 and N2 O. Only water vapor has possibilities to recreate convection forces. If scientists did not see the differences in properties of different GHG, how is it that “it is possible to reconstruct accurately the climate forcing caused by the sum of all three long-lived GHGs”?

We must reevaluate deadly wrong science of climate change as soon as possible.
GHGs have nothing to do with climate change. It is mistake of Arrhenius, which today science took as axiom.

Q. How many global warming deniers does it take to replace a lightbulb?

A. We must reevaluate deadly wrong science of light bulbs as soon as possible. Broken light bulbs ave have nothing to do with darkness. It is mistake of Edison, which today science took as axiom.

There are ZERO published scientists who agree with your "deforestation is *primarily* causing global warming" "theory", mioffe.

As you mioffe are a non-scientist why do you think ALL climate scientists in the world -- including the small minority who are "skeptics" -- are wrong and you are right?

My dear Publicola, I explain to you many times, why I thing so. It is not my fault that your brain inclined more to create jokes, if you something can't understand.
I am very patient and will repeat to you again: properties of water are cooling the atmosphere despite water bapor is GHG.
Please reread again http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=clearing-forests-may-transform-local-and-global-climate TRY TO UNDERSTAND WITHOUT BULB, EDISON AND OTHER IN THIS CASE NOT SO IMPORTANT THINGS AND PERSONS.

U.S. National Academy of Sciences
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a strong, credible body of evidence, based on multiple lines of research, documenting that climate is changing and that these changes are in large part caused by human activities. While much remains to be learned, the core phenomenon, scientific questions, and hypotheses have been examined thoroughly and have stood firm in the face of serious scientific debate and careful evaluation of alternative explanations...

Some scientific conclusions or theories have been so thoroughly examined and tested, and supported by so many independent observations and results, that their likelihood of subsequently being found to be wrong is vanishingly small. Such conclusions and theories are then regarded as settled facts. This is the case for the conclusions that the Earth system is warming and that much of this warming is very likely due to human activities.
