CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tiger Woods is taking a three-week break before returning to golf at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Woods announced Wednesday he will resume an up-and-down season May 3-6 at Quail Hollow, where he won in 2007. He also committed to The Players Championship the following week. A year ago, he injured his left Achilles tendon and withdrew after nine holes at TPC Sawgrass. Woods missed the next three months.

But first, a rest.

"I'm going to take some time off and not look at the clubs for a while, and then get back after it," Woods said on his website.

In his last three tournaments, Woods withdrew in the middle of the final round at Doral with a sore Achilles tendon, won at Bay Hill for his first PGA Tour title in 30 months and tied for 40th at the Masters, his worst 72-hole position in any major as a pro.

"I know what I need to work on," Woods said. "It's just a matter of getting out there and doing it. Just putting in the reps and the time. I just wasn't able to do it at the Masters."

Woods also said it was a mistake to kick his 9-iron after missing a tee shot at the par-3 16th in the second round.

"One thing I would like to say about the Masters last week is that obviously I got frustrated at times and know some of my actions were wrong, especially at No. 16," he wrote. "The Masters means a lot to me, and I was trying as hard as I could. I'm out there competing. I grind every day, and my expectations are to do my best. It's very disappointing when that doesn't happen."

Woods missed Quail Hollow a year ago because of what was described as a "minor injury" to his left leg. The last time he played the Wells Fargo Championship, it was his second tournament since returning from the crisis in his personal life. He missed the cut with the highest 36-hole score (153) of his career.

Masters champion Bubba Watson, U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell also said they would play at Quail Hollow, a major caliber course that attracts one of the strongest fields of the year.

Westwood also said he would be at The Players Championship, which he skipped a year ago.

I applaud him 'not looking at the clubs for a while.' Just play.

You can become so over-coached that you can't enjoy playing, I think.

Plus, I don't think his present caddy is doing him any good. Could be wrong.

Good to see Tiger picking up events like this. I think he needs to play more. If I was him, I would play 30-40 times a year. I mean, he thrives on competitive golf... so why not play competitive golf. Sure, the majors are what matters... but wins build confidence. My buddy Caleb lives by this course... I hope he gets to see Tiger in action this year!

Yeah maybe more reps on the course instead of reps with a coach hovering

Good grief, I was afraid there would be no other golfers on the course...

I bet they show every shot Tiger takes, regardless of how well he is playing. They have to. That is what ratings are for... and Tiger is good for ratings.

I won't necessarily be rooting for you, Eldrick....but I wish you better consistency with your swing.

He legally changed his name to Tiger several years ago. But why do you say that... why aren't you rooting for him?

Well, I disliked him before all the scandals. My guess of how he really behaved, his sense of entitlement and superiority were pretty close to SPOT ON, as the scandals came to light.

I was in awe of his game, his concentration....but conversely it is hard to root for somebody who has won everything....every juniors and college and amateur match and his first Masters, and 14? more Majors. Never any adversity, and the media coverage seemed to add to it and dishearten other players, made the myth so much stronger than reality. People crumpled and didn't fight, I feel, and if they did win the talk was still all about Eldrick. Stole the punch and thunder from other golfers even when THEY just did something incredible.

I hated the way the media coverage was just him, and it has been for 10-12 years. When all the others win, they get a few minutes while Eldrick gets hours. He hadn't won a thing for 2 plus years, yet he dominates the thoughts of the media people even in events he wasn't in or withdrew from, or was way out of the race.

I never thought he was evil, but he has had his success. Even if he never wins another. I choose to root for other players.

It appears Peter Kostis and maybe some others may have erroneously started the word that Eldrick changed his name to Tiger, but that never happened.

The clincher is his divorce papers all say Eldrick Tont Woods

No doubt he'll be the favourite going into this just like all his other tournaments.

I saw Bubba Watson on the "David Letterman Show" and he seemed like a great guy who has humility, good golfing skills, and a good sense of humor.

Yeah, he is. Are you on Twitter? If so, follow him. He is a lot of fun. He has a very good attitude about golf, even when he isn't playing well he is still having fun. He will win a few more in his career.

He was cute. I liked how he described his personal golf style as awesome. He has a good sense of humour and isn't full of himself. Nice to see him win.

Tiger Woods is Golf in today’s age let be clear on that, I am an older timer the loss of his game is only a temporary thing, I feel like most it just because of the embarrassment from the choices led out for him. Tiger was not the first to make these choices, but the biggest person caught up in such a public way. Tiger Woods is just 36 years old when he comes to terms with the hurt he cause, his family, his game will be back in a big way.

Tiger is the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be. Period. I don't approve of how he acts on the golf course, but I get it.
