The Miami Rum Renaissance Festival Is Back: Five Events You Can't Miss

Miami's liquor of choice just might be rum: it goes down smooth, mixes well with everything, and has that tropical flair.

We even have the annual Miami Rum Renaissance Festival, to which people have flocked in droves, doubling attendence every year. In 2011, more than 4,000 rum lovers came out to sample and celebrate the spirit.

Below are five events at next week's festivities that rum lovers just can't miss. Try out rums from around the world during the weekend tastings, dance to the music at after parties throughout the week, or test your palate in the Great Rum Challenge.

A $250 VIP ticket gets you into all the parties throughout the week, but individual event tickets are available for purchase.

The Great Rum Challenge
When: April 17 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Where: Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Ave.
Tickets: $30 in advance, $35 at the door

Do you know your cachaça from black rums? You might be a good contender for this year’s blind rum taste testing. With eight rums before you, match each to the product being featured and continue on to the second and third round. The one who wins the sudden death finals is not only the Great Rum Challenge winner, but also the recipient of VIP tickets to the rest of the festival and a guest judge in the rum tasting competition.

Liar’s Club Pop-Up Bar
Where: Deauville Hotel, 6701 Collins Ave.
When: April 17 to 20 from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. (or whenever you feel like it)
Tickets: Free

Inspired by the notorious Liar’s Club in England, the hotel’s in-house bar will be serving up tiki-themed cocktails especially for the Rum Renaissance. For four nights, the events of the festival will lead to the Deauville Hotel’s bar in the Jazz Club. On Friday, Dr. Mike “The Jetsetter” Jones will be spinning tunes.

Bacardi VIP Party
Where: Penthouse Bacardi USA, 2701 Le Jeune Road in Coral Gables
When: April 19 from 9 to 11 p.m.
Tickets: $45

The festival has another bus trip planned, this time going to the Bacardi Penthouse in Coral Gables for a soiree. Enjoy Bacardi products at its full bar -- the company just marked its 150th birthday, so there’s lots to celebrate!

Grand Tasting Events
When: April 21 and 22 from 1 to 7 p.m.
Where: Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Ave.
Tickets: $40 in advance, $50 at the door

After hearing about the judges tasting all those delicious rums, it’s your turn. On both days, guests are invited to taste more than 200 fine rums hailing from more than 30 countries. Besides sipping on rum, there will also be a cocktail competition, seminars from rum experts (how do we become one of those?), and exhibits with mixology books, cigars, bar gear and more.

Rum Renaissance at Broken Shaker
When: April 16 to April 19
Where: Broken Shaker at Indian Creek Hotel, 2727 Indian Creek Drive
Tickets: Free

Miami's best mixologists created a charming outdoor pop-up bar that regularly serves up a great poolside atmosphere and even better cocktails. So next week, Broken Shaker is hosting nightly rum-focused functions that just may find a few liquor-lovers going off-Deauville and camping out under a couch for convenience.

Up first: Monday night's kickoff event with mixologist Isaac Grillo creating spring-inspired libations while Chef Pauli Yellin cooks up rum-kissed culinary delights (8 to 11 p.m.). Tuesday brings rum-infused barbecue from Tantra's Jeffrey Beauchamps and Ron Zacapa cocktails (5 to 8 p.m.); Wednesday is Tiki Night with frozen cocktail creations (7 to 10 p.m.), and Thursday night is the big kahuna: Bar Lab's 2nd Annual Pig N' Punch party with a hog roasting, conga lines, and overflowing punch bowls (7 to 10 p.m.).
