Unclaimed Tax Refunds: IRS Has $1 Billion Waiting For You (Graphic)

Irs Tax Refund

Think you don't need to file your tax returns because you don't make enough money?

Think again. Even though you may not owe the IRS anything this year, the IRS may owe you. And you're not going to see one penny of that refund unless you file your personal income tax forms with the IRS.

There a few reasons why you may be owed a refund. Perhaps your employer witheld too much in taxes from your paycheck or you qualified for credits or deductions, like the Earned Income Tax Credit.

There's good news: It's not too late to claim the funds you think you might be entitled to! You actually have three years from the time your taxes are due to claim your refunds. That means that you can still claim your refunds going back to 2008--as long as you file a 2008 income tax form by Tuesday, April 17.

Think you're owed money? Check out TurboTax's interactive graphic, which breaks down unclaimed tax refunds by state.

a ton of money?

I am willing to accept 300 pounds of one hundred dollar bills to lessen the load on the gov't.

Hey, I do what I can for America.

As so OFTEN happens....."interactive map" won't load.....SO tiresome...
I never had "dial-up" but I feel as if I know what it was like from trying to view various articles on my beloved "HuffPo".

For the record: Seems worse since the AOL merger

A guess?: Site too loaded down with "bells and whistles"....

For the suggestion box:
Spend a little more on "tech" ...and a whole lot less on making SURE no-one ever sees a dirty word or hears an impure thought...

My two cents....

I'm out....article does not work

I pay money in taxes every year. I don't want to give the government an interest free loan. I'd rather not file at all and make myself a subject of the government, but what do you do when they have bigger guns and lots of jails and run the courts.

I just focus on making money with my business and let the tax experts handle my tax affairs.

This looks more like an ad for Turbo Tax than a real story. All states have unclaimed money sitting around waiting for the right people to claim it. This is no secret!

Any unclaim property goes into probate court were the fees for the lawyers is a cool 10 grand even if the property is ten bucks.

In a society where the people have true rights to hold its elected GOV accountable this "I got your money and will keep it if you don't tell me you want it", is not allowed. If they know you have money coming they should inform you how much and what forms to file. Its your money not theirs.

The states do the same thing with unclaimed property. You use to be able to check if you had unclaimed property for free then they sold the database to any leach that could pay them a fee. They will tell you there is money at the capital but won't tell you how mush. Its all a big BS game to the state. You could start a finders fee business and collect the finders fees from the people the state is trying to keep from getting. After seven years the law says the state gets the money...isn't that special.
