Crista Hebel, Mom, Gives Birth To 12-Pound Preemie Baby

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 04/15/2012 9:41 pm

12 Pounds Preemie

Michigan mom, Crista Hebel, 26, went into labor and gave birth four weeks early. However, baby Ayara was no ordinary preemie -- she weighed in at 12 pounds, 3 ounces.

"My jaw dropped when I heard that number in the operating room, but I knew that was in the realm of possibility," Hebel told the Record-Eagle.

The new mom was already making arrangements for a caesarean section because of the baby’s unusual estimated size, but went into labor while being treated for dehydration, the paper reports.

Hebel said on Tuesday that Ayara, who was born Sunday, was doing well in the neonatal intensive care unit. "Everyone in the NIC-U tells me it's very hard to remember she was born premature because she's so large."

Dr. Debra Kurtz said in 21 years of practice Ayara set the record for the biggest baby she’s delivered yet. Dad, Bob Hebel, was quoted as saying that his daughter’s size was not because of a medical condition. "She's just a very large child,” he said.

Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OBGYN with Stamford Hospital told The Huffington Post that fetal macrosomia -- defined as a birth weight of more than 8.8 pounds -– is certainly on the rise and mothers should be concerned. In a recent study, researchers found that infants in a control group were, on average, 100 grams heavier than they were 50 years ago. And though there's been no scientific evidence of a definitive trend, Dr. Ghofrany says that in the last five to six years, "babies have definitely been coming out bigger".

Biggers babies might look cute, she said, but the trend is dangerous for two reasons: Large babies are harder to deliver and higher weights might be indicative of other medical issues for both mom and baby. Right now, Dr. Ghofrany said, fetal macrosomia can be directly attributed to maternal obesity and diabetes. But that doesn’t mean those are the only factors, she explains. Babies might be heavier for the same unexplained reason girls are going through puberty earlier, but there's only been speculation about possible causes for either phenomenon -– contaminants in food or hormones in meats, for example.

While big babies may be on the rise, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby ever born weighed 23 pounds, to Anna Bates in 1879. No other newborn has tipped that scale yet, but here are seven who have come close.

Anna Bates was born in 1846 not 1888.

She weighed 18 pounds at birth not 23 pounds.

No doubt the male and female are FAT--then to say the baby is just big is even a bigger excuse for being irresponsible... What a society...more excuses than we have days left as a non bankrupt nation!

What? People who are rail thin have big babies too.

And we see the world of fat etc...there goes the quality of our lives...and theirs before they get a chance on their own...

Heathen breeding has come to a point where a license is needed to do so...

The USA has imported the world's overpopulation now we are a 5th world nation without the choices our founding forefathers and our ancestry created for us...we are rewarding negative irresponsible behavior of those expect something for nothing!

This should be a forum where we are allowed our opinion. I stated that I feel the due date is WRONG. I also said that MANY times overweight women (and their partners) continue to eat poorly -- this can often result in an overweight newborn/gest diab for the mother. If the parent's are not eating well, they will most def. not feed the child well .. this can result in an overweight family .. and the cycle continues. We have many overweight women in our family, who have gotten gest diab, resulting in very heavy newborns .. they look like balloon babies, ready to POP, their poor little faces so swollen :*( and these babies I spoke of were my nieces and nephews .. the family continue to NOT eat well, and now I have OBESE nieces and nephews. There is a correlation -- and it can happen .. I didn't say that this is ALWAYS the case .. so to those of you who felt the need to slam me privately and on this board ---> RELAX!

My mother weighed 12 lbs and her brother was 13, back in 1912 and 1913, Most large baby's today come from mother having gestational diabetes many dont have any idea if they are not tested for it.... I thought a preemie was always under 5 lbs. I have a feeling that the date of conception was off a month.

I've gotten slammed for saying that the due date was OFF. I've also posted that many obese women continue to eat poorly, resulting in overweight newborns .. who often (not always) go on to become overweight all their life. People have shredded me for it. Why don't people on these forums allow others to have an opinion, without all the ANGER. Yipes

Why don't people on these forums allow others to have an opinion, without all the ANGER. == because too many people feel that because it is anonymous they can say what they want.

Theresa, just think of it like this, there are 10 of thousands who read and the few that may respond are just an insignificant. Don't let it bother you. Those that sit behind a computer screen, wouldn't be the same in person. You'll see :) Your correct with your comment. And welcome to the night shift blog, very different than the daytime people. Mostly adults, and a few adult want to be's..lol, for the most respect everyone.

early puberty, heavy babies, premature births, at some point our system of nutrition needs a healthy look. All the additives in today's food chain coupled with sedintary life styles will likely produce even more significant "norms" in the human species.

When they said "preemie" I didn't expect it was only 4 weeks early. Maybe they got the date worng. My son was born 2 months early and was 4 1/2 pounds, then he dropped down to 3 lbs.11 oz.
That was over 16 yrs ago... now he's 6'2" and 200 lbs. :)
12:24 AM on 04/17/2012
Heh, at 4 weeks early, the neonatal team freaked out on my daughter when she was born...even though there was nothing wrong with her and she was 5.5lbs! I think these days a preemie is considered 'high risk' if they are a month or more early.
How was the care at the hospital when your son was born? Were they very worried? I don't know how hospitals were doing things 16 years ago, since I was only 14 then! :)

We had excellent care . My son was very healthy, but had to stay in the NICU for 3 weeks because he couldn't hold up his body temp. He's a big strapping boy now. Hope your bab is doing well. Best wishes :)

36 weekers are called late pretermers and can have problems with breathing, temperature regulation, etc.

My daugher was born 3 weeks early 12 years ago at 7lbs 11oz. My son was born last March 3 weeks early at 10lbs 3 oz. The difference? I was much older with my son and developed gestational diabetes. Luckily I had great medical care, but it can be dangerous. There are many factors that determine baby birth weight.
