Thurman Iowa

THURMAN, Iowa -- Officials say a small western Iowa community has been severely damaged by a possible tornado.

Fremont County Emergency Management Director Mike Crecelius told The Associated Press on Saturday that about 75 percent of the town of Thurman was destroyed.

He said there were no injuries and no deaths in the town of about 250 people.

Crecelius said the town was on lockdown Saturday night and wasn't letting anyone in. He said town officials and residents expect to start cleaning up on Sunday.

Crecelius said some residents had taken refuge in City Hall, which was the only building in town with power. Others were staying in a shelter, at motels or with relatives.

Tornadoes were spotted across the Midwest and Plains on Saturday as an outbreak of unusually strong weather seized the region, and forecasters sternly warned that "life-threatening" weather could intensify overnight. I hope they are well. If they rebuild their town I hope they follow the example another Midwestern town that was destroyed and go solar. Soldiers Grove, WI was destroyed by a flood in 1978 and required new buildings rebuilt on higher ground with solar designs. It's called "America's First Solar Village"

I am shaking my head at some of these comments that are being left here "supposably" after reading this story. I know everyone has a right to their own opinion, but has anyone ever heard of the word "compassion"? What about being thankful that you, any of your family members and or friends, were not affected by any of these tornados? Tornados are natural disasters, and in this day and age, they happen more frequently, and in places that are not known to have had a tornado before. I sure the heck would never want to experience one, and I feel for the people that have lost their lives, family/friends, or their homes/belongings. May they have the strength to carry on, and rebuild their lives.

A reason not to live in a mobile home, ever! Of course, most homes become mobile when by a tornado.

Isn't it nice that someone's suffering can be reduced to political talking points that HAVVE NOTHING TO DO with what just happened to them?

Pat Robertson says that tornados are sent by God to punish people for their wickedness. In other words, when people get hit by a tornado, they deserved it.

He must absolutely giddy right now about the fact that Thurman got hot by a tornado, because it proves that they're no good and that they got the punishment they deserved.

The storms are here, stronger than the latter. Prepare yourselves. This can be a healing time across the land if we all sympathize with each other & another. When one's time has come it will be.
