Dole Bagged Salad Recall: 756 Cases Pulled Due To Salmonella Risk

04/15/12 07:15 PM ET AP

MONTEREY, Calif. — Dole Food Co.'s fresh vegetables division is recalling 756 cases of bagged salad, because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

The bags of Seven Lettuces salads were distributed in Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The company said the bags are being recalled, because a random sample tested by the State of New York came back positive for Salmonella. No other Dole salads are included in the recall.

The recalled salads are stamped with a use-by date of April 11, 2012, UPC code 71430 01057 and product codes 0577N089112A and 0577N089112B, the company said.

The product code and use-by date are located in the upper right-hand corner of the package, while the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode.

Dole said that it's coordinating with regulatory officials and that no illnesses have been reported.

Consumers should throw out the recalled salads. Dole said it's also contacting retailers to make sure the bags in question are not available for sale.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of eating the contaminated food. The illness can be severe or even life-threatening for infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

"The recalled salads are stamped with a use-by date of April 11, 2012"

Let's look at it this way, if you are going to eat that bag of lettuce you are probably going to get sick even if it doesnt have salmonella. Besides most bag lettuce starts to wilt and turn brown before the U.B.D. Are we sure they didnt sit on this story until AFTER the expiration just to avoid losing money but still "covering their a--" by doing a recall ?

Who can we trust? Our government is more concerned with how they can dominate the globe, how they can get illegals into the voting booth, and how they can arrest citizens for terrorism than they are with food safety. They Do SWAT raids on raw diary farmers, threaten to force pork farmers to shoot their pigs all the while allowing Monsanto and others to feed us genetically engineered food without proper labeling. We can't trust our government to protect us from bad food. How can we trust them with anything?

Well, it's not being recalled is it? ;)

Stop perpetuating the myth that organic foods are "safer" for you to eat. They are just as likely to contain pathogens that can lead to food borne illness. Wash your food...

And my point was - since you missed it - was that I did not buy bagged greens.

Get it now? Don't fall off your soapbox ;)

That is incorrect. Small animal growers report far lower bacteria counts than conventional meat that gets sprayed with ammonia to kill bacteria.

I bought a bagged salad a couple of years ago and got sicker than that guy on Super Size Me when he ate his first McDonald's combo.

I cant believe people are still buying BAGGED lettuce. I only buy head lettuce and romaine not bagged and rinse them very very good.

There is something with the bagged stuff. Until they discover totally whats causing it, dont buy it.
01:53 PM on 04/17/2012
perhaps it's that lil green frog in with the lettuce.???
