Zombie Shooting Targets Popular With Doomsday Preppers At National Rifle Association Exhibition

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - One of Patrick Flanagan's favorite movies as a kid was "Night of the Living Dead," a 1968 horror film about a family trapped in a rural Pennsylvania house and attacked by zombies.

"I really dug zombie stuff since then," said Flanagan, 23, an unemployed concrete worker from Alton, in southern Illinois.

So Flanagan combined his interest in zombies with another hobby - guns.

He was one of many gun owners crowded around a display of lifelike zombie paper shooting targets at the National Rifle Association's Guns and Gear exhibition on Saturday during the NRA annual conference in St. Louis.

The Hollywood-inspired zombie craze - featuring blood-soaked ghouls rising from the dead to attack the living - has extended to gun enthusiasts. At the huge NRA exhibition, vendors displayed zombie targets, zombie bullets, zombie paint coating for guns and zombie patches for a shooting jacket.

Firing ranges across the country are offering zombie-themed shooting events, some held as daylight fades for atmosphere, said Brad Ross, a division manager for Law Enforcement Targets, Inc, a maker of zombie targets.

Flanagan, who said he owns 19 guns, likes to drive out into rural areas to practice shooting. He is bored with shooting cans or simple bullseye targets and the zombie targets will be more fun, he said, clutching his roll of 40 poster-sized images.

Sales of zombie targets are booming and are expected to grow about 30 percent to a million targets this year, Ross said.

"It is absolutely dumbfounding," said Addison Sovine, a salesman hustling on Saturday to keep up with the demand for the shooting accessory at the Law Enforcement Targets booth.

For the truly zombie-obsessed, Sovine demonstrated small packets of blood-colored liquid that can be purchased to attach to the back of the zombie target so that it bleeds when shot. If an explosion is desired, a grainy mixture is for sale that will blast like a firecracker when hit.

TAKING AIM ON "ZOMBILADIN" TARGET

Among the most popular of the 18 zombie target designs offered in its catalog are "Becky," an image of a wounded, pale and dark-eyed female, and "ZombiLadin" a bearded and bloody likeness of the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, company officials said.

Ammunition maker Hornady introduced a zombie bullet last fall with a green painted tip and it was one of their most successful product launches ever, according to marketing communications manager Everett Deger. The bullets come in a bright green box saying "20 rounds certified Zombie ammunition" with a warning that it is not a toy.

Zombie-themed paint coatings for guns are among the 10 most popular camouflage designs offered by DuraCoat Firearm Finishes, which paints guns, said Operations Manager Amy Lauer-Potaczek.

Much of the interest in zombies has been fed by popular culture, such as the movie "Zombieland," starring Woody Harrelson, and the "Walking Dead" television series about a group of people trying to survive in a world overrun by zombies. But Sovine said the obsession has gained momentum from "preppers" - people who are preparing for doomsday - and the belief by some that, according to the Mayan calendar, the world as we know it will end in December.

"As soon as we pass December if we are not all dead, we live on, and it is really not the end of the world ... I think you will see it (zombie target sales) start to come back down the other side," Sovine said.

Not real? Are you sure? I'm quite sure that my ex-wife and at least 2 or 3 of my university professors were zombies. At least I'm think my anatomy lecturer was. Well, and my professor of classics... and maybe abnormal psychology. Looks like I'll have to rethink my entire life's philosophy.

I am a Liberal. I support sane practical gun laws. I think the NRA are immoral greedy pieces of slime. I own a gun. I also would love to run around the woods and shoot zombie targets. Why? Guess I never lost that natural feeling from boyhood to want to play cops and robbers or cowboys. I However do not need a extended 30 clip for a handgun. Not do I need a assault rifle as well as I think I should have to pass tests both physical and mental to own a gun as I also think I should be totally free and clear of a criminal record to own a gun. That's right. Liberals who own guns and like to play with them exist. And we hate the NRA. The NRA is pro violence pro vigilantism and do NOT care about being responsible about guns.

Naturally, when doomsdays comes, the enemy that we will be forced to fight against will, in fact, be the zombies.

Wow the Gun Fetish of America member are really upset by people questioning the use of guns. Me thinks there is a whole lot of defensiveness going on here. Oh, and just because it's 'legal' does it make it smart, healthy or good for the country. It just makes it legal....

Deepening the pronounced trend toward mass sociopathic behavior ... dehumanizing the "other" humans...the subhumans...the Untermenschen...

Cultivating violent fantasies among the denizens of our corporate dystopia. It's good for gun sales.

I've seen gun salesmen in gun stores up-sell firepower by escalating the threat to a "zombie strung out on crank and bent on rape, robbery and murder."

"A 22 won't do, Mam - you need a 9mm."

Well to be fair, a .22lr won't do much for self defense. 9mm, 45ACP, or 38 Special should do the trick.

What's with all the nasty comments?

Why can't people have fun while shooting at targets?

Must a target be a big plus sign or "Buyllseye" and nothing else?

Why are "Deer" shaped targets and "Bird" shaped targets and "Bear" shaped targets OK but "Zombie" shaped targets are not? The cops use "Human" shaped targets already.

What about cans? Can we still shoot cans?

What about "Clown" shaped targets? (I have always hated clowns.)

Why not televangelists? How about a bunch of targets that look like Tea Party activists?
It's focusing attention on subliminal terrors that eventually drive some people to see everything they are afraid of personified ... and thus a target.

It's deeply sick and I can't believe that it eludes some people.

Wow, what you suggested is in absolutely no way comparable. There is a whole genre of movies devoted to zombies, and people killing zombies. That's what people are going for here.

Oh, come on....my son and I shot some of these targets at the shooting range a while back, as did his girlfriend. It was kind of fun being like...Ok, you'd better kill this thing, or you're lunch. It was fun teasing his girlfriend, since she had never shot before and she was missing completely at first, but by the time we were done, she was placing rounds between the zombie's eyes.

"Placing rounds between the zombies eyes" sounds like a blast! Human shaped figures shot between the eyes. A gun nuts dream. I know you would love us to jump on the bandwagon that shooting at human shaped targets is fun. I am not biting. It is a bizarre behavior. and if you want support for it I suggest you grab an NRA forum and seek out approval. The next thing will be human targets with guns trying to shoot you and then it will be a free for all. You guys are always pushing the limits.

I can see it now, some gun nut pulling out his concealed weapon and killing a human and pleading "Stand Your Ground" " I swear your honor I thought it was a Zombie, and BTW wasn't that a great shot, right between the eyes"

Oh, I have used "human" shaped targets, believe me. This "gun nut" is trained and knows how to use my weapon. I'm sorry that being able to defend yourself puts your panties in a wad, but as a US citizen, it is my RIGHT. I live out in the middle of nowhere, where it is a guaranteed 10+ response time from the Sheriff's department, where they might as well send the coroner along as well, because there will be body(ies) for them to pick up. And your darn right well, if some punk wants to punch me in the nose and pound his fists in my face, I'll place a round point blank into him. I'm sorry that I don't abide by your "cowering in the corner, begging for my life" routine. But it's funny how people like you swear we're the ones who are dangerous....funny, in owning guns for the last 20+ years, I've never indeed gone out and killed anyone....nor has the other 99.99999% of LEGAL gun owners.

3 Million lawfull CCW's yet not one article of proof from Brady or VPC making the connection to what you stated. Keep hoping you might find one.

Yet your free for all conclusion has never happend in the decades people have been shooting human targets that have been done by millions, including cops. It's you who is bizarre to have such a belief. You should never be close to any weapon with your kind of think. You should be on the court ordered list of people prohibited from owning a gun.

What concerns me is the mention of him being "bored" by shooting cans and regular paper targets. How bored will he have to become before he starts shooting actual people?

Zombies are in mivoes for entertainment. Police shoot at targets without any designation except human form. They use targets looking like life like criminals in special training circumstances. (hostage taking ) I don't see a big jump going from zombie paper targets to computer games to real life scenarios for certain individuals. When i shoot at a range i use a human form silhoute that resemblemss no monsters nor race. If i have a live target i am not wondering what race they are, only where my bullit is going to hit.
