George Huguely Sentencing Scheduled For Aug. 30 For Yeardley Love's Murder

George Huguely V
George Huguely V will be sentenced in August for murdering ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love.

A former college lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend weeks before graduation will be sentenced on August 30, WHSV reported.

A jury recommended a 26-year sentence for former University of Virginia student George Huguely V after convicting him of the second-degree murder in February. The actual number of years he'll spend behind bars, however, will be determined at a hearing in Charlottesville.

On Monday, prosecutors and Huguely's defense team appeared in court to finalize upcoming dates related to the case, including sentencing. Judge Edward Hogshire reprimanded Huguely's lawyers for showing up late, NBC 29 reported.

The defense is expected to appeal for a new trial, according to the local television station.

In May 2010, Huguely drunkenly stormed into the bedroom of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, who also played lacrosse for the university, and got into a fight with her. Love, 22, died after a roommate found her bleeding face-down on her bed.

Prosecutors charged that Huguely, now 24, killed Love with a blunt force trauma to her head -- an accusation that he denied.

They charged Huguely with premeditated murder after the couple's tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship, but the jury settled on a lesser homicide charge.

The jury's recommended sentence includes 25 years for the murder charge and an additional year for stealing Love's laptop from her apartment.

Can we really say justice is being served if the guy was tried in February...but won't be sentenced until the end of August? Seems very unfair to the victim's family to have it dragged out for months like that. Why the delay? Get it done, already.

His last name being HUGuEly is certainly appropriate because he is, extremely huge! Several years ago I had the pleasurable honor of being able to spread my legs for George a couple of times. He was amazing!! Check out his crotch bulge in most of the full body photos of him and you'll see what I mean, he is huge!!

You should know within 1 day if you are compatible with someone or not. If not, turn around and go in the other direction. It won't get any better over time. Opposites may attract, but they won't get along well.

The sentence seems arbitrary and to have no relationship to the crime.
08:13 PM on 04/17/2012
He takes a life and the sentence is 25 years? That just does not seem like justice.
03:39 PM on 04/19/2012
There is no sentence yet. It will be handed down on August 30. Did you read the article?

We have visited all our states prisons on behalf of the mentally ill inmates. There a 'theroy' that is backed up by statistics, it's 25 years and or age 55 when released less then 1% reoffend. He needs to serve the 25 straight up, no parole.

25 years. Unfortunately, Love is gone forever. I do not believe in the death penalty but I do believe that if you take a life, you give up your own as well and should not be allowed another chance at the freedom you denied another.

She was trying desperately to break off with him and be kind and gracious about it because she knew so many people in his circle, his family and friends and she did not want to worry her mother & sister...very sad that she was such a decent and loving individual....trying to make sure no one was hurt in the process. In the end his drinking and brutual, vicious behavior took her life because she did not realize until the end the monster this spoiled and entitled man/boy truly was and the alcohol was a factor but George was never used to be told NO! I truly pray the judge will do the right thing and give him at least twenty years to think about his selfish and brutal act of taking Yeardley's most promising life!!
