A former college lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend weeks before graduation will be sentenced on August 30, WHSV reported.
A jury recommended a 26-year sentence for former University of Virginia student George Huguely V after convicting him of the second-degree murder in February. The actual number of years he'll spend behind bars, however, will be determined at a hearing in Charlottesville.
On Monday, prosecutors and Huguely's defense team appeared in court to finalize upcoming dates related to the case, including sentencing. Judge Edward Hogshire reprimanded Huguely's lawyers for showing up late, NBC 29 reported.
The defense is expected to appeal for a new trial, according to the local television station.
In May 2010, Huguely drunkenly stormed into the bedroom of his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, who also played lacrosse for the university, and got into a fight with her. Love, 22, died after a roommate found her bleeding face-down on her bed.
Prosecutors charged that Huguely, now 24, killed Love with a blunt force trauma to her head -- an accusation that he denied.
They charged Huguely with premeditated murder after the couple's tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship, but the jury settled on a lesser homicide charge.
The jury's recommended sentence includes 25 years for the murder charge and an additional year for stealing Love's laptop from her apartment.
