NEW YORK -- Kevin Kline will play Romeo opposite Meryl Streep's Juliet for a one-night-only staged reading of Shakespeare's play in Central Park.

The Public Theater said Tuesday that Streep and Kline will combine on June 18 to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Shakespeare in the Park series. Daniel Sullivan will direct.

To make that night even more giddy, Al Pacino will be honored for his body of work with the Public, which includes his playing Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" in 2010.

Streep has performed five times at the park's Delacorte Theatre since 1976, most recently in "Mother Courage and Her Children" in 2006 with Kline, who has performed nine times in the park since 1970.

Tickets for the gala aren't cheap: They begin at $1,500.

Considering that at Shakespeare's time he would have men play the female roles...I think he's be okay with Streep and Kline...

I am sick of Streep...am I the only one?...I doubt it... As for this event, it is a circus for elitists.

Surely you mean Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline with play Romeo and Juliet's GRANDPARENTS. I love Meryl, but come on already. I sort of bought her as a 40-something in that ABBA musical. But this is absurd.

I'm a seedy old white boomer. I would like to see Gaius Charles do Romeo to Saoirse Ronan's Juliet.

Although Juliet was 13 and Romeo was 17, I will suspend disbelief if these two are reading!!

Exactly! And what a great take on it. Wish I could see that performance.

I just wish I had the $1500! I have been lucky enough to see other performances in Central Park and it's really magical!

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. The Iron Lady, IMHO, was the worst re-writing of history on the screen I have ever seen.

I used to love those performances when I lived in Manhattan. The picnic before and the performance. Always a great evening.

Well, there's no way they can play it as two young lovers. It would have to be something along the lines of, "After a lifetime of waiting, I've finally found you. Now I would die without you." And the family would have to be their grown children or their ex-spouses.
