The Huffington Post     First Posted: 04/17/2012 12:32 pm   Updated: 04/17/2012 3:32 pm

New social media darling Pinterest is growing by leaps and bounds. Experian recently ranked the site as the web's third most popular social network (behind Twitter and Facebook), up from seventh place in November of 2011. Impressive!

So what are people sharing on Pinterest? With a majority of female users (estimates range from as low as 58 percent to a whopping 97 percent), the site is overflowing with tasty recipes, pretty photos and cute craft ideas. According to Pinterest data directory Repinly, 29.5 percent of the most popular pins come from the food and drink category; the category of DIY Crafts receives the next-highest amount of pins, at 13.4 percent of total. Indeed, Repinly shows that the most-repinned posts usually feature attractive photos of edibles that link to or are captioned with the items' recipes.

Take a look at the slideshow (below) to see the most popular pins of all time, based on stats pulled from top pinners' public profiles and posts. huffpo, whether you realize it or not you potentially outed those using imaging without authorization. professional food photographers are most up in arms about the abuse of their finely tuned craft that they have spent years and huge expense to learn and create.

those "pinning" images without proper authorization are subject to copyright infringement that can cost them dearly, and pinterest absolves itself in such action per their terms of service, and will even seek financial retribution from the user should they be named in the suit.

nice business model you're promoting. very nice indeed.

The whole point of Pinterest is that you are never "pinning images without proper authorization." Every pin is a link back to the original website (unless someone else stole the image and posted it on a third-party website) so chefs, bakers, designers, and crafters, get all the credit they deserve plus extra visitors to their website. It's a very nice business model to be promoting. Very nice indeed.

simply providing a link-back does not mean permission has been granted.  nor does it assure people will go to the web site of the original work.  fact is, the owner of the content being used may not even know the images are being used on a site for other commercial use.  the proper business model is for permission to be granted prior to anything being posted.  argue all you want about merit(s) but that's how copyright works and pinterest and its users are in violation if permission for use of imaging isn't first granted.

once again huffpo promotes a site that encourages copyright infringement. and once again i call it to their attention.

perhaps huffpo could do the tech readers in this section a favor and do an investigation on the lawsuits being readied and how the site places its users in legal peril.

thanks for the link. however, the commentary made didn't look at the full scope of how they (pinterest) infringe on intellectual property.

first, those who search the net and pin, the images are placed on their servers with the exif/meta data stripped. it is illegal to remove copyright information.

secondly, they are undermining the safe harbor aspect of the dmca through the above as each time the image is pinned a separate notice must be filed. in essence, they are playing a hide-n-seek whack-a-mole with the copyright holders property.

lastly, as there are link-backs to commercial pin users blogs/web sites, infringers are using imaging to promote their commercial interest without permission, thus avoiding proper payment and/or licensing of such imaging.

the article link you provided also sheds light on their terms of service that puts their members in legal peril and those costs can be substantial.
