Report: The Future Of The U.S. Economy Will Depend On The Country's Hispanic Market By Way of Their Increasing Demographics

Hispanic Market

Latinos are key players in the American economy. But while the present U.S. economy benefits from Hispanics, the future U.S. economy is likely to depend on the Hispanic market, according to "State of the Hispanic Consumer: The Hispanic Market Imperative" a report released in April by Nielsen, a global marketing and advertising research company.

According to the report, the Hispanic market’s size and buying power of $1 trillion in 2010 is projected to have a 50 percent increase up to $1.5 trillion by 2015.

Given these numbers, the U.S. Hispanic market is one of the top 10 economies in the world. And despite being hit particularly hard by the recession, Latinos are quickly benefitting from economical improvements in the country. The Latino households in the U.S. that earn $50,000 or above are growing at a faster rate than total households.

A look at the growing and ever changing demographics in the Hispanic population in the country is key to understanding the future of the U.S. economy.

"The Hispanic community in the United States is large and growing, and businesses must make strides to understand and engage these consumers," said Susan Whiting, vice chair of Nielsen, according to Market Watch.

"Due to the general youth of this segment, family focus, strong culture and prevalent Spanish-language use, Hispanic consumers are impacting all areas of work and play and helping to redefine American culture in the 21st century."

A report released in February by the Pew Hispanic Center revealed that 8.1 of Hispanic women in the United States have given birth in the last year, while only 5.9 percent of white women have done the same.

As the largest immigrant group, Hispanics also exhibit culture sustainability and are not disappearing into the American melting pot.

Instead, retro-acculturation is taking place, as many Latinos reach back into their roots for a sense of identity. While second and third generation Hispanics are adapting to U.S. culture and customs, they still maintain strong attachment to Latino traditions and value systems. Hispanics in the U.S. experience a strong sense of cultural pride.

Nielsen found that 31 percent of Hispanic adults say they want to be more Latino while 60 percent say they want to be bicultural.

On a similar vein, technology is an important focus given that Hispanics use the same technology and media platforms as the rest of the country but adapt it differently given their cultural and language needs.

As for consumption trends, Nielsen found that Latinos differ in that regards to their white counterparts. While Hispanics tend to shop less often they tend to spend more per trip and are less likely to buy products at promotional prices.

The Pew Hispanic Center report also displayed just how young the Latino population is. The median age of the Latino population is 28 years old and given that the age of new homebuyers is between the age of 26 and 46 years old, Latinos will become an important force in home purchasing over the course of the next ten years.

Data from the Center for American Progress, a nonpartisan think tank, states that out of immigrants that arrived during the 1990s, 70.3 percent are projected to be homeowners by 2030.

So sorry, but it won't. LMAO. I just love these articles that HuffPo posts that are nothing more than "fear tactics". If we don't embrace latinos, the world is going to come to and end. I don't think so. The recovery of the American economy may have a little to do with the buying power of latinos(diapers, cerverza, tacos, more diapers, more cerveza)but the return of the American economy will depend on many, many things the least of which is latinos. It will actually depend on when banks will decide to start investing in America again...in creating jobs by investing in both large and small businesses which will create jobs which will allow people to start spening money again on consumer items like homes.

I read this report, and it leaves out a lot. Hispanics are 16% of the population but responsible for only 8% of US GDP. In other words their per-capita economic contribution is half that of other Americans. Also they are net tax consumers, they take more in benefits than the pay in taxes, the remainder is borrowed which is why the budget deficit is so high. If they are the dominant future force of our economy that explains why it is going downhill.

Also the report doesn't mention who paid for it, Nielson doesn't do these for free. Maybe La Raza paid?

"Due to the general youth of this segment, family focus, strong culture and prevalent Spanish-language use, Hispanic consumers are impacting all areas of work and play and helping to redefine American culture in the 21st century."

And yet Hispanics have a horrific rate of high school drop outs and teen pregnancy rates. How do those two areas impact the future of our country, as Hispanics become the new majority?

From the Pew Hispanic research center: Some 41% of Hispanics ages 20 and older in the United States do not have a regular high school diploma, versus 23% of comparably aged blacks and 14% of whites.

In February, 34 percent of all Texans receiving unemployment payments from the Texas Workforce Commission were Hispanic. The payments are not available for undocumented workers.

• • Texas native-born Hispanics have a higher high school dropout rate and a lower level of college attainment than those living in other states, Southwest Economy reported. The attrition rate among Hispanic high school students was 42 percent last year.

• • Hispanic girls accounted for 62 percent of all births to teen mothers in 2006, the most recent year reported by the National Center for Health Statistics.

FANNED AND FAVED. Well, one day, America probably will be the United Northern States of Mexico. This is what many latinos are striving for. But, at that point, America will be just another cesspool of the poor and uneducated and a nation ridden with drug violence....just like Mexico is now. This is the future of the once great nation of America if we don't do something now.

Ad researchers, corporations and businesses are fully aware of this growing market. Expect to see products and services aimed at it to capture the dollars there. As the Irish have contributed to our growth as a nation, our economy, and in other walks of life, so will Hispanics one day. This is how America renews itself and grows. Meanwhile in Old Europe they will have problems in the coming years with productivity, their economy and in other areas as well. So will Japan. Those countries and regions are aging out.

Yeah, so how will Mexicans making minimum wage or less be able to contribute to the costs of running America say in 30 years? They are going to be supporting those 13 year old mothers with 4 kids who have no education and no job skills. If the Mexicans outnumber all the Anglos and blacks in America at some point in the future...what then? LOL. At 64 years old, I won't be around to finance the Mexican lifestyle anymore. Thank God.
07:59 PM on 04/20/2012
No, but they will be probably changing your diapers.
04:41 PM on 04/23/2012
Minimum wage jobs? Thirteen-year-old mothers with no education and no job skills? It sounds like you are describing the situation in the red states, particularly those in the South, where the racist, sexist, anti-union, anti-science, anti-education policies of the GOP are the law of the land.

Mississippi, for example, has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the country, yet they have a relatively small Hispanic population. California, on the other hand, has far more Hispanics, a much lower teen prenancy rate and far less poverty.

Please stop blaming Spanish-speaking people for all of the country's problems.

So the Hispanic Market is the solution to our economic problems, and their buying power is going to increase from 1 trillion to 1.5 trillion by 2015! Is that because they expect to have 50 million illegals here by then? Where do they get these bean counters from?
11:24 PM on 04/18/2012
The rise of the Hispanic population in the U.S. is now due to natural birth and not from migration or immigration. Given the fact that the Baby Boom Generation, the largest in U.S. history is entering its retirement years and will begin dying off, the rise of the Hispanic population is perhaps the only thing that will keep us a superpower.

Not gonna stop your daughters and grand-daughters from patronizing them. Even Bush Sr. has them in the family. Then again, you could kill off the babies as they're born to maintain your supremist blood lines.
07:53 PM on 04/19/2012
One of my daughters already has "done business" with a Mexican. He tried to grab her off the street as she was walking home from school and force her in his car. Thirty years later, she hasn't forgotten, nor have I.
11:25 PM on 04/18/2012
It won't matter. After a few more decades, everyone will have someone in their family who is Hispanic. Demography is destiny. And not all Hispanics are Mexican. Jeez.

My but Hispanic Propaganda thinks alot of them!
Not only are they the fastest growing minority in the US but the biggest and most powerful voting block there is and now the US economy can't survive unless all of our products are labeled strictly in Spanish because they are the biggest consumer block.
What part of it is true? Try none of the above.
12:51 AM on 04/20/2012
Well you are not entirely wrong but you are not right either. Hispanics are in deed the fastest growing minority in the US if you chose to believe this or not is your problem but this is a fact. Also it is true Hispanics are not the biggest voting block but is one of the fastest growing ones due to the fact mentioned before. Also why it may not the be the biggest one, it is already a very important and indispensable one. As for the Economy, Hispanics now have a big influence in the US economy and well if I were a company owner I would def invest in bilingual labels and anything else that will attract Hispanics to buy my products.
01:49 PM on 04/20/2012
Racist much? Asians are the fastest growing group, not Hispanics.

http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2010/briefs/c2010br-11.pdf

As a business owner I am investing in this market, Asians are more educated and thus have a much higher income than Hispanics, and also are able and willing to quickly learn English, saving me translation costs. Much more profitable for me.

We better hope this isn't the case. Today's LA Times presents the latest attempt to get the children of Mexifornia through the Los Angeles Unified School System. Hint: it doesn't include figuring out how to educate them to function in a modern first world economy.

I think you mean that the LAUSS wants to make a "D" a passing grade. LOL. This will enable all the latino kids that are failing to graduate from high school. Yup....the more we accomodate the Mexicans, the further "down" America goes. Pretty soon, America's education standards will be on a par with Mexico...and of course....THAT IS THE PLAN.
