Jesse Kelly, GOP Winner In Arizona Congressional Primary, Could Succeed Gabrielle Giffords

Jesse Kelly Congress

Jesse Kelly, a construction project manager and Iraq War veteran, won the Republican primary Tuesday in Arizona's Eighth Congressional District to fill the seat that Gabrielle Giffords vacated after she resigned to focus on her recovery after being shot in the head in January 2011.

Kelly had almost 36 percent of the vote in a four-way primary, according to results Wednesday morning. Ron Barber, a former Giffords aide, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. They will face off in a June 12 special election.

If Kelly is a familiar name, it is because the tea party favorite ran and narrowly lost against Giffords in 2010.

Immediately following Giffords' shooting, many recalled a June 2010 event held by Kelly in which voters could shoot an M16 with the GOP candidate. "Get on Target for Victory in November Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly," read the announcement.

"I think a majority of the voters like our plans," said Kelly after he won Tuesday.

He's proposed a ten percent flat tax. "If 10 percent is good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for the federal government. They can find a way to make that number work," he said in an April debate.

Kelly has repeatedly raised the issue of gas prices in the campaign, claiming that the U.S. has more oil than Saudi Arabia and even calling oil a "renewable resource."

"Drill here, Drill now and pay less. We have significantly more oil in this nation than Saudi Arabia. Start getting it. We have all the coal we could ever want. We have all the natural gas we could ever want. They estimate we have a 90 to 100 year supply of natural gas. We also have all the uranium we could ever want for nuclear power," he said at an April 5 debate. According to the CIA World Factbook, Saudi Arabia is first in proven oil reserves, while the United States is thirteenth.

At a Tea Party event in February, he said, "Three decades ago, they told us there were 800 million barrels of oil existing in the world. Today, because of technology, there’s over a trillion. So apparently it is the renewable resource we’ve all been talking about!"

Not missing an opportunity, Kelly raised the issue of gas prices in a panel discussion on the Trayvon Martin shooting. Fox News' Sean Hannity asked him whether President Barack Obama was at fault for a "flash mob" incident following the slaying.

"I think it's 100% the fault of Barack Obama and the other politicians in Washington," he responded. Pivoting, he said, "Because he's willing to stick his nose in anything right now to get the American people's minds off the fact that's there's really 14 percent unemployment, and gas at four dollars a gallon when we have more oil than Saudi Arabia in this country."

Later on in the discussion, he accused politicians of "grandstanding" on the incident. "No one knows the facts yet and to have everybody grandstanding on it, everybody making a statement on it, trying, as I said, to capitalize on a horrible tragedy like this is more than just gross: it's sad, really."

A new slightly more Democratic district encompassing most of the old district is up for election in November, and both Kelly and Barber have said that they will run in it.

Uh, this guy wins fairly and of course the left wing comes out bashing him for winning, but worse they chastise him for "only being a combat vet and construction guy".. Good job Liberals, point out an honorable action and one that shows a man who isn't afraid of hard work, as something to be ashamed of.

Locally known as Jesse "machine Gun" Kelly, this high school educated, non com, who works for his father, beat a Harvard graduate, female A.F. Colonel. It gives you an idea of Arizona Republican values.

Not to say that the retired AF colonel wouldn't also have been a good candidate...but, Giffords was pretty popular..and , as the article above points out, Kelly almost beat Giffords in the last election.

He was the logical choice.

The right's base are the perfect tools: You create a fiction wherein they get rich/richer faster and tell them who it is "OK" to hate, and you can flat-out steal all of their wealth, political power, and - eventually - their liberty.

You've 'gotta' love a real American who, somehow, hasn't been compromised. Let's see if he's correct in his positions. At least he has some real scientific evidence on his side and he seems to be thoughtful, unlike the former House Speaker who had to pass the Obama Health "Care" bill so we could then read it to find out how we liked it, or even what was in it.

Oh! PS is there some responsible reason that we won't attempt to see whether we have all these reserves.........uhh...............nope.The Whackos are in charge of science in this country....................................when the 60's dropouts from society found a home in the left wing universties , this then became th inevitable result. The GOTP House we have right now has done nothing to help our country, or our economy. They have focused on heated social issues and passed unconstitutional laws that are big government in our personal lives; and contrary to what they claim to stand for. The GOTP needs to go. They are actually worse than the old Republican Party that was recycled into a monster machine by the Koch Brothers and fooled voters into believe it was new and better. They are the ones behind the Super PACS that made all elections about big money. The GOTP is the worst nightmare for the people. They are big corporate America, and that is a second government. It is bigger government in a much worse kind of way. They are the worst kind of government.

Ah, the only members of congress passing unconstitutional law is the democrats cupcake.

Stepoutto .. yes they have helped, they've tried to stop the spending .. maybe now we can get rid of the corrupt GSA .. and other spending items ..
They don't hold a majority so they are somewhat limited.
Have you noticed that we haven't a budget for over a thousand days now?
It IS the spending, that is the problem.

Arizona is striving hard to become the most backward and uneducated state in the country.... The citizens of Arizona must be very proud of this goal,,,

Florida, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi are NOT far behind!!

Actually it's NY and CA that are diving to the bottom faster than meteors travel. We're doing fine in TX, where technology is booming, requiring "real" education, not indoctrination into moonbeam and snail sludge worship.

You obviously don't understand how the oil industry works. The oil industry is NOT a nationalized industry like they have in Venezuela. Oil prices are set by the global market. It wouldn’t matter how much oil was produced in country it will still be priced according to the international market price. Believe it or not the United States already exports more fuel then is used in the U.S. Have your Senator and Congressman write a bill that keeps all fuel produced in the U.S. stay in the U.S. and maybe then you might see prices come down. But don’t bet on it.
06:56 PM on 04/18/2012
Speculators base their offers upon what they perceive as th future supply of a commodity. Whenever there's a promise of more supply, the immediate price drops, because no one wants to hold the $100 bag of wheat in times when $10 wheat's common.

Therefore drilling now and approving more lands available for exploitation drives speciuilators to bid lower.

The pump price is based upon replacement valuation, not cost paid. Therefore, when their future replacement costs drop, their immediate prices follow according to the competitive marketplace.

As far as nationoalized oil industries go, simply look at the dismal performance of Venezuela's. Not only does is NOT provide more profit for the common folks, it's completely despoiled the rather precious Lake Maricaibo, and causing untold illness in the population.

Whenever there's a monopoly, there's far less performance or care for environment. One example here is the hundreds of specialized fuel formulations for each region, rather than a national standard as in Europe. With this, sometimes only one refinery has the ability to produce all the gasoline used by a geographical area. Illinois has such a quandry, and everyone gets to pay more for gas, while all brands come from one supplier. CA is even worse. Competition drives prices down, not up.
04:37 PM on 04/18/2012
The answer is not that simple. If you actually took the time to look into the real reason for high gas prices, you'd know that.

The REAL reason for our high gas prices is Obama!
05:59 PM on 04/27/2012
Oil is traded exclusively in US dollar, thus a weak dollar makes for higher prices. Also, much maintenance is done on refining during this spring, which too can cause a temporary spike, but this rise in price is more so to do with the weak dollar and opec controlling the supply along with ASIA needing more of it.
Put more supply on the market and price will drop, its pretty basic economics, but if we really want independence from the opec cartel we should probably look to our own supply of Nat Gas and its benefits, such as being cleaner and more accessible. Right now Our main issue with Nat Gas is finding places to store it, as we are pulling it out of the ground in such great quantity we are actually building vast reserves. .
