KFC Rotten Chicken Lawsuit: Former Manager Says He Was Forced To Serve Green, Expired Chicken

Posted: 04/18/2012 4:08 pm

Kfc Green Chicken

The term "green chicken" is pretty stomach-turning, especially when you learn it might have been purposely served to customers at an Oregon KFC, according to a lawsuit filed this week.

The Consumerist summarizes the lawsuit: "A former manager at a KFC eatery in Oregon alleges that the owner of his franchise not only ordered employees to serve expired chicken, but also that employees who refused to do so were fired."

According to the lawsuit [pdf], KFC receives boxed shipments of fresh -- not frozen -- chicken. The boxes indicate a "kill date" of when the birds were slaughtered and processed. Employees are instructed to not serve chicken 12 days past the "kill date."

The plaintiff, a former manager, explains in the suit that "chicken not served within 12 days of its kill date developed a noticeably foul, rotten smell. In addition, expired chicken changed color from white to light green and the blood on the chicken began to noticeably thicken and coagulate."

But when the plaintiff found greenish chicken and approached the owner saying it should be thrown out, the owner instead instructed him to cook and serve the chicken immediately. Similar incidents continued, according to the suit, such as the plaintiff receiving a text message from the owner to serve rotten produce.

The manager and owner's relationship soured after these instances, especially after another manager left in protest over serving rotten chicken. The manager/plaintiff was eventually fired for "arguing with leadership," and "not creating an environment of team work with leadership and owner."

Though it's impossible to know what really went down between the owner and manager, we're not keen to sample the fare from the Seaside KFC to find out who is telling the truth.

  • Human Skin In Chicken Sandwich

Years ago my Family found a wad of hair..Like someone cleaned a brush in a Family size can of condensed soup... No, it wasn't Campbell's ... Some other company from NJ that dealt with institutional size cans . I also worked in a resort when I was younger in the Poconos as a waiter ..Every time we went into the cooler to get a pre-made desert the roaches were all over it and scurried away when the lights came on..I told the cook in charge and he said just shoo them off.. I quit..The person I was serving it to was a well known soap actress and I couldn't serve it to her... I only eat fast food where little old ladies work and at small family owned restaurants ... Never in a large city....
Another thing that will turn your stomach is that the federal govt allows so much mice/rat feces in grains.... Enjoy your Cereal...

Finding a itsy, bitsy feather in a chicken Mc Nugget...itis made out of a bird, what else do you expect....except dead muscle tissue, blood vessels, nerves and some blood residue..it is cut from a bird, a mechanically plucked bird..feathers are the least thing you have to worry about.

Oh and a disemboweled mouse in a packaged salad and they already ate the salad before they found the mouse?

Are they serious? You wash a chopped salad before putting it in the serving bowls and putting sauce over it because in those bags bacterias will grow like crazy...

What did she do, rip the package open, drop premade sauce in it, shake and eat directly out of the package and this is why they didn´t find the mouse?

Swallowing coils, bullets...do people not chew anymore or how can you miss such a thing?

Yeah I found once a snail in my salad in a restaurant...but I keep an eye on what I am eating, not staring holes in the air and swallow mindlessly..I am not certain how the kitchen staff missed the snail..it was not a french restaurant so I guess the snail was an accident and not part of the dish.

It's why we cook more at home now.

We stopped eating fries.
Fried chicken from KFC isn't any really better than regular grocery store fried chicken and who really eats the skin coating anyway. Plus it's the worst thing to eat healthwise.

Part 3.

And dont be brainwashed into believing this has anything to do with the job market, the economy, or anything else like that. This has been going on for years, and years and years, and will continue to go on for years and years, and years.

Three "tale tell" signs of a "dirty" or "uncaring" restaurant:

1. Trashy outside (literally, trash all over, overflowing trashcans)
2. Waiting in lines, whether its walk in or drive thru. Lines mean they are too busy to handle the amount of people coming through.
3. Dirty prep area or dirty kitchen area, including dirty looking employees. By dirty employees, I dont necessarily mean covered in food....Im talking more personal hygeine.

Theres a lot more to that, but you get the gist.

Yes! Years and years!

Part 2.

No, not all fast food managers do this, but it IS common practice. Again, depending on the company, the more product that is sold and not thrown out, the more the manager gets in bonuses and the more product he/she can order next time. The more "waste" you have, the less bonus you get and your order is not allowed to be changed the next time you order for your store. On the whole, the more you throw away, the less you make in your check, and the less your order is.

Fast food managers do NOT share thier bonuses with their staff either. So, most fast food workers couldnt care less if food falls on the floor, is covered with maggots, or is green and moldy. They get paid minimum wage, or close to it...with no perks, benefits, or bonuses. So, why should they care?

The fast food term for this is "pushing product". Or it was when I worked in fast food.

And its not only fast food, its in restaurants too. Any kind of food establishment really.
Have you ever seen the movie "Waiting" with Ryan Reynolds in it? This may be a comedy, but it is all TRUE!!
10:58 AM on 04/21/2012
Part 1.

Geez, have NONE of you ever worked at a fast food place? This is COMMON PRACTICE! Depending on the company, it is "unwritten law" that any manager will get fired if they dont cook and sell ALL OF THIER PRODUCT that was shipped to them.

Whether its green, it smells sour, it has mold on it, maggots on it, roaches/bugs in it, falls on the floor, etc....IT GETS COOKED AND SERVED!!!

I worked for Grandys after I got out of high school, and we ran out of chicken fried steak patties one day, and all we had left were one tub full of GREEN, MOLDY patties.....the manager told me to cook them. I told him they would make people sick. He said he didnt care, HE wasnt getting fired for NOT selling ALL of his product! And if I didnt like it, I could go find another job. They got cooked one way or the other.

After working in several different kinds of fast food places, I can tell what kind of place it is, and if I will eat there or not. I also learned what times of the day and what days during the week to get "clean" food from a fast food place. Needless to say, I wont go to any fast food place anytime I feel like it. It has to be during these specified times I know that the food will be clean.
09:11 AM on 04/21/2012
the job market has been tight for quite a while. Supporting a family, perhaps as this manager did, the choices are tough. Take care of your family, and serve rotten chicken, or quit and perhaps risk your familys future on doing the right thing.

If guilty, the owner should be force fed the food he put into the mouths of others. He should be forced to eat it by the crate on a daily basis. No pity for him.

Full stop. And yes, I'm a culinary professional. We toss out food items two to four days after their dates (that is, the date we open/unseal/receive, depending on the type of food), well below the seven day limit the law stipulates.

Wow, I think that I just lost my appetite...forever.

Oh I believe him as this happened to me as well at a KFC. Yes the chicken was usually frozen when it came in, but if you knew what really happened at this KFC you would never eat there again. We always served green chicken, hell we would even drop it and kick it across the floor, and still serve it. Sometimes we would find chicken in the back of the cooler, and we had to cook that as well. If you think that is bad you should check the tea urn, if you do not bleach, and clean the nozzle every day, then I will give you two guesses what is growing inside. I even worked for coca cola who ran a deli in N.C and I quite because of the disgusting things they use to make us sell, well past green and bordering on rancid, but we were told to sell it anyway to save money, we never threw anything out, and would keep putting it out and mixing it with the good stuff to cover up the smell until they sold it. All for a profit with little or no regard for the customer, it was sickening. "Seriously check the nozzles on a tea urn if you think I am joking".

Tea urns are some of the worst in terms of being a breeding ground for mold. My employees are required to scrub out the urns and store the nozzles in sanitizer solution every single night. Otherwise, you're really better off just selling bottled Nestea or Lipton Brisk.

If you ever go to a restaurant with a self serve soda station and find that your drink is dispensed in your cup like a jet nozzle or you see one side of the nozzle dispensing syrup and the other dispensing water/soda water, then that means the nozzles are clogged with MOLD and BACTERIA!!!

About 20 years ago, I worked at a KFC and my manager also made me cook some green and foul-smelling chicken. But, the chicken still stunk even after it was fried, so thankfully he let us toss it out. Disgusting.

I worked at an Albertson's grocery store in the Service Deli in Washington state in the 90's and our manager had us bread and fry green chicken so we wouldn't "lose money" on it. It was against my better judgement but we had to do it or we would be fired for not doing as we were told.

I'd break his face on the way out. Luckily, my boss insists on food being tossed after four days, max.
