Trayvon Martin Case: Michelle Obama Calls Teen's Death A 'Tragedy'

04/17/12 03:21 PM ET AP

Trayvon Martin Michelle Obama

WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama says her "heart goes out to the parents" of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager who was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida.

Mrs. Obama says in an interview with NPR that all parents understand "the tragedy of that kind of loss." Martin was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who has claimed self-defense.

The first lady says it's important "not to lose sight of the fact that this is a family that's grieving and there's been a tremendous loss." She says, "we all have to rally around that piece of it."

Police initially didn't charge Zimmerman in the Sanford, Fla., shooting, leading to nationwide protests. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder last week.

  • Barack Obama

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," President Obama said. "I think [Trayvon's parents] are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

  • Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich told Piers Morgan that the Trayvon Martin case was tragic, and that he didn't believe the shooting would be covered by Florida's Stand Your Ground law. "I think Americans can recognize that while this is a tragedy -- and it is a tragedy -- that we're going to relentlessly seek justice, and I think that's the right thing to do," Gingrich said. Asked about the Stand Your Ground law, he said, "The young man apparently was not following the person who's being investigated. Apparently, the shooter was following the young man. That's not a stand your own ground, that's a chase the other person into their ground. And I think you're going to find the law, as interpreted normally, doesn't apply to this case."

  • Allen West

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) condemned the killing of Trayvon Martin, but cautioned against making the case a racial issue. Below, his full statement as posted on Facebook:
I have sat back and allowed myself time to assess the current episode revealing itself in Sanford, Florida involving the shooting of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin. First of all, if all that has been reported is accurate, the Sanford Police Chief should be relieved of his duties due to what appears to be a mishandling of this shooting in its early stages. The US Navy SEALS identified Osama Bin Laden within hours, while this young man laid on a morgue slab for three days. The shooter, Mr Zimmerman, should have been held in custody and certainly should not be walking free, still having a concealed weapons carry permit. From my reading, it seems this young man was pursued and there was no probable cause to engage him, certainly not pursue and shoot him....against the direction of the 911 responder. Let's all be appalled at this instance not because of race, but because a young American man has lost his life, seemingly, for no reason. I have signed a letter supporting a DOJ investigation. I am not heading to Sanford to shout and scream, because we need the responsible entities and agencies to handle this situation from this point without media bias or undue political influences. This is an outrage.

  • Mitt Romney

"What happened to Trayvon Martin is a tragedy. There needs to be a thorough investigation that reassures the public that justice is carried out with impartiality and integrity," Mitt Romney said in a statement.

  • Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum said the shooting was "horrible" and a "chilling example of the horrible decisions made by people in this process." "Stand Your Ground is not doing what this man did," Santorum said, adding that he believes the Justice Department should leave the matter to local and state authorities.

  • Rick Scott

Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) said a state task force would review Florida's Stand Your Ground law and recommend changes "so that we might help avoid such tragedies in the future."

  • Frederica Wilson

Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) denounced shooter George Zimmerman as "a renegade wannabe policeman neighborhood watchman." "Mr. Speaker, I am tired of burying young black boys," Wilson said during a speech on the House floor. "I am tired of watching them suffer at the hands of those who fear them and despise them. I am tired of comforting mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters and brothers after such unnecessary, heinous crimes of violence."

  • Condoleezza Rice

"Well, first of all, it's a great tragedy," Condoleezza Rice told Andrea Mitchell. "This young man has been deprived of life and that's an enormous tragedy. And we all should have prayers and for his family and for those who are left behind. So it's a great tragedy. That's the first thing to say. Secondly, I've always said that obviously, we are not a race blind society. We aspire to be one, we work toward it, we've gotten better, but we are not yet. But I'm not going to comment on the legal aspects of this case because as I understand it, the Justice Department is looking into it, local authorities are looking into it, and I certainly hope that justice will be done here and due process accorded. But I'm not going to comment on the legal aspects of this. I'm not competent to do so."

  • Mitch McConnell

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called the shooting an "incredible tragedy," but declined to comment on the "Stand Your Ground" law. "It is an incredible tragedy of huge proportions," he said. "I'm glad it's being investigated and we'll take a look at it as the investigation moves along."

  • Harry Reid

"The killing of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy, and nothing will bring him back," Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wrote in a statement. "But there remain unanswered questions surrounding his death, and I applaud Attorney General Eric Holder for opening an investigation. Trayvon and his family deserve nothing less, and my thoughts are with them in this unimaginably difficult time. Any single incident where an unarmed civilian is gunned down is one too many, but sadly, similar incidents have occurred in other states, including in Nevada. I trust the Justice Department and law enforcement at all levels will provide the justice that Trayvon's loved ones and our country deserve."

this is for brian tull. if someone followed you, tracked you down after you tried to run away , what would you have done? and if you can be honest. don't try and justify your answer by non-sense statements like " we don't know if he was chased or he didn't have to heed the police's advice not to follow. don't use those cheap tricks.

Not very long ago, there was a young black man that shot into a house, for no reason and hit a two year old girl in the head and killed her, then we heard no more about it, because of his race? why wasn't it made front page news??

George should be happy he gets a good defense, out on bail to eat good food, sleep in a nice bed, take a hot shower while his defense is being prepared. These things he didn't afford to his victim.

Other way around... remember that Zimmerman was attacked.

I supposed if you had a man comparable to your size, assaulting you, maybe you'd make it. However with even a lucky punch you can kill someone.

In my opinion, Zimmerman was in full rights to defend himself.

"not to lose sight of the fact that this is a family that's grieving and there's been a tremendous loss."

Yeah, but it's also important to think of ways to profit form this, by trademarking every day sayings/names etc. that Trayvon has said.

Well, now we've heard from the POTUS and the FLOTUS on an active criminal case. No pressure, prosecutors. Just give Zimmerman a fair trial and then LYNCH HIS A$$, I guess that's the message here.

A trial is not a lynching. Shooting a youth walking home from the store, and then not getting arrested for 45 days, now that's lynching someone

No that wasn't her message, but of course the babies on the Right will scream because she dared say anything against their active campaign to dehumanize Martin.

Some may say that a lot of other teens are being killed. But the fact is that this young mans family came out and fought for justice, a lot of others have not and do not. They fought and brought attention to their sons murder, as well as an unjust law. And they knew who to call, a lot of people don't want to call activists and just are too drained to do so, and just don't want to go through all of the publicity, but this Mom and Dad fought. A lot don't. This was a wrongful death, no matter how some people want to twist it into nothing... They fought and not just for Trayvon but for others as well....I stand with the family.
05:16 AM on 04/23/2012
I don't think you got to call activists, Al, Jesse, Jeremiah and others are always ready to jump on the band wagon and star instigating the masses.

She is right that we need to support for the family of Trayvon but there is another family grieving just well and that is the Zimmerman family.

@moore2george, it's not that, a lot of Black Americans tend to say "oh they'll get away with it", why even go through it all. But this young mans Mom and Dad wasn't going to let this go. It's called Justice and railing against an unjust system. And not just for their son, but to shed light on the injustice, to bring it out in the open, a system that a lot of times is unbalanced.

Exactly! I appreciate the compassion that has been displayed for the family. Hopefully something positive can come for this tragedy.

Look here SteveO..... We Right Wingers don't have a problem with Mrs. Obama making the comments she made..... It's just that there is another life involved that was ignored... George Zimmerman and his family! You don't see him strutting around proud as a peacock do you???? The politically correct comment Mrs. Obama should have said is that she also feels for the Zimmerman family as well knowing they are hurting as well and that we pray for both of these families. But instead they took sides without knowing all the facts. Instead of uniting they divided a country. So you may say it was a reasonable and appropriate comment but I say they created more harm than good. What happens if this man is proven justified in his actions? Then what? OOPS my bad?

the Zimmerman's are hurting? They still have their son. Trayvon is dead, gunned down after buying skittles and iced tea - do you see the difference.

The problem here is that Zimmerman was allowed to waltz out of a police station after killing another person. The very minimum amount of effort to conduct an investigation couldn't be mustered up. They had the cell phone with Martin's parents numbers and never, even picked up the phone to let them know their son had been killed.
