Crime Homicide Boston University

BOSTON -- A Boston University graduate student was shot and killed last night in Allston, according to a BU spokesman.

A spokeswoman with the Boston Police Department adds that city officers responded to 139 Allston St. in Allston, Mass. around 2:30 a.m. this morning and saw a male victim on the street suffering from apparent trauma wounds to the head and leg. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crime scene did not take place on Boston University's campus, but was close to Boston's busy Commonwealth Avenue.

The investigation has just launched, so little information is available at this time. Police had no word on possible suspects.

University students were alerted to the shooting this morning through BU's notification system.

BU's information office reports that BU President Robert A. Brown says, “Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the student. We are all deeply saddened by his death.”

Brown also asked Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore to provide support to any member of the community who needs it, according to the news office's website.

“This appears to be an isolated incident,” says Brown. “I want to assure all students, whether they live on campus or off campus, that public safety is a priority for this institution.”

The release says the university is working with Boston police to increase patrols in the Allston neighborhood.

“It’s important that all students on or around the BU campus make their personal safety the highest priority,” says Elmore.

i fail to understand why the local news channels have not released details about this person. My mother had called from India this morning and told me about this incident. It's unbelievable what students and their families both local and international have to endure.
Here is an excerpt from the Hindu newspaper...

"A student from Odisha, pursuing graduate management studies in Boston University, was shot dead on Thursday night.
The body of K. Seshadri Rao (24) was found in Allston Street, approximately 1.6 km from the campus. Seshadri hailed from Jeypore.
The Indian consulate in New York informed his father Sudhakar Rao, who is Chief Manager of Utkal Gramya Bank at Jeypore, of the tragedy.
“My son didn't have differences with anyone, both inside and outside the campus. He had no bad habits. He was probably targeted out of jealousy, as he was extremely good at studies,” a shocked Mr. Rao said.
Throughout his career, Seshadri had been a brilliant student.
He joined Boston University as a non-sponsored candidate in Graduate School of Management, where he was studying Treasury Investment.
“My son was doing very well. He, along with a student of China, was sent to attend a conference in Canada,” Mr. Rao said.
Seshadri was sharing a house with three more students on Allston Street.
Mr. Rao had taken a study loan of Rs. 15 lakh to finance his son's studies, and arranged another Rs. 12 lakh from his near and dear ones."

Rest of life and education had gone to waste for this victim. It would not be surprising if the suspect(s) is illiterate.

Both of my adult children live in the Allston neighborhood. I wish I were as confident as the police that this is an isolated incident.

Gun control is a "pig in a poke" Law abiding citizens are asked to surrender their weapons on the promise that criminals will do the same. Why not lock up the crooks first-then talk about "guns?"
07:19 PM on 04/19/2012
Enforcing laws already on the books is not as 'newsworthy' in the lamestream media.
07:33 PM on 04/19/2012
Gun laws aimed at law abiding citizens are examples of "experimental laws," which are at high risk for failure, wasted public money and backlash.
Anti-gun advisor Georgette Bennett admits in her book Crime warps that punishing felons in illegal possession of a firearm is the only proven method of reducing so-called gun violence

BETTER YET, establish a nationwide gun control law that covers manufacturing, importation, trading and selling of weapons. put a licensing system into force which includes individual gun ratings and limitations and a psychological profile and stability exam to qualify. lets not forget a comprehensive weapons registration system that allows the government to know who each gun is registered to at any given time and hold all owners fully liable for harm caused by their weapons (aside from those whose weapons are stollen and imediately reported). keep in mind, most outlaws who do have guns generally dont use the weapons. most of them only use them to threaten and don't want to kill. Among modern western industrialized nations, the USA scores the highest among gun related deaths. the stats are available.

Firearms are the most regulated consumer product in the US. Guns have to be approved by the BATF before they can be made. I wish you would do some research.
Owners are already liable for acts they are responsible for.
Since outlaws are already armed, or will evade any legal system you can devise, your regulations are only an expensive boondoggle that squanders police resources. You are using circular logic again, since you can apply the term"modern industrial nation" to select or exclude any data that does not agree with your predetermined outcome. I have my own "stats"

In many cases the suspect is identified shortly after the crime, but because the suspect has a right to a speedly trial, he must be brought before a judge within hours of his arrest. That is why the police must complete their investigation and have the case ready for court prior to making an arrest.

They need to give us more information. We need a description of the killer. They said it was an isolated incident so they must have some idea of what their motive was.

Anyone on the streets after 1130 pm without protection are bound to be hurt. This happens everywhere in the USA. It's a shame but, it's the way it is. 99.8 % of all humans who disappear, disappear between 1130pm & 545am.
07:07 PM on 04/19/2012
So we are to give up our streets between 11:30 P.M. through 5:45 A.M. to the Criminal Element? Have we become the herd at the mercy of the predator, or shall we defend ourselves and take back the night?

The more we stand our ground and defend ourselves the better the chance of the night being won.
11:41 PM on 04/19/2012
take back the night? how many graphic novels are you reading?

that being said... there is no reason why anyone should have to fear walking through their neighborhood no matter what hour it is.

@dbonedlg, are you trying to you a statistical report to justify or encourage the existence of such atrocity? I don't get it. That's an outrageous comment you made. Just in case you are unaware, this school has some of the brightest youngest minds in the country, and YES, STUDENTS SHOULD STUDY AS LATE AS THEY LIKE ON CAMPUSES, and they should feel free to work to their dorms at any time they wish. http://www.nyoombl.com/nimble.php?view=4f8f79bb2b4aa. That link shows you some of the finest minds in this country, and while there are amazing things going on at BU despite the string of horrific events of late, your remark really does not advance anything useful. It fact, it only suggests that we should all sit back/accept things as they are, rather than advance useful discourse on and investigation of the issue.

Why don't they just pass a law making it illegal to kill people? Then it wouldn't matter if people had guns and we could stop arguing over guns laws. Oh wait! Somebody willing to commit murder will probably just ignore any gun laws because it's illegal to murder people and they ignore those laws. So, why does anybody think laws controlling guns will stop gun violence? Getting a gun is ridiculously simple, and any half baked machinist can build one in a machine shop in a couple of hours. Fulminated mercury and gun powder are high school level chemistry. So, the sorts of people who supply the illegal drug trade could become even richer supplying the illegal gun trade if you outlawed guns. Why don't some of you goofy folks understand this? Laws removing guns from the hands of law abiding citizens is beyond stupid. Punish criminals - severely. Leave law abiding folks alone.

Sociologist Ernest van den Haag wrote a very prescient article on gun control in the (if memory serves me) Dec. of 1968 National Review. He made same point.
What has happened in Jamaica after gun were outlawed is huge jump in political murders by police and large numbers of weapons slipping from rouge military and cops to thugs. Murder has soared since 1970s
