Brittany Killgore Dead: Marine's Missing Wife Found Dead Near California Lake

By ELLIOT SPAGAT and JULIE WATSON 04/19/12 01:24 PM ET AP

Brittany Killgore
The body of Brittany Killgore, a Marine's wife who went missing last week, was found near a southern California lake and has been officially identified.

SAN DIEGO -- A woman arrested in the mysterious slaying of a Camp Pendleton Marine's wife will be charged with first-degree murder.

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis released no details of evidence or motive during Thursday's announcement that Jessica Lynn Lopez will be charged in the death of 22-year-old Brittany Dawn Killgore.

Killgore disappeared last week, triggering a search that led to discovery of her body in neighboring Riverside County.

During the investigation another Camp Pendleton Marine, Louis Ray Perez, was arrested on a weapons charge. Dumanis says he remains a person of interest in the Killgore case.

Killgore's husband is en route home from Afghanistan.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Authorities have determined that a body found near a Southern California lake is that of Brittany Dawn Killgore, a Marine's wife whose disappearance has led to the arrest of another woman on suspicion of murder.

Killgore went missing after filing for divorce last week from her husband, a 22-year-old Marine deployed to Afghanistan. Her body was found near Lake Skinner in Riverside County about 25 miles northeast of her modest apartment complex in Fallbrook, a town of 38,000 people about 60 miles north of downtown San Diego that is known for its avocado orchards, rolling hills and proximity to Camp Pendleton.

Neighbors were stunned Wednesday when coroner investigators announced that it was the body of the 22-year-old Killgore that had been found in the brushy area.

"It's very bizarre. I wish I knew the end to the story. Where are the leads?" said Navy Petty Officer Ashley McMurray, who has lived at the complex of yellow stucco homes on Ammunition Road for 11 months.

Authorities have said little about their investigation. Another Marine, Louis Ray Perez, was identified as a "person of interest" by a prosecutor Wednesday after he pleaded not guilty to stealing an assault weapon. Authorities say he stole the weapon in early February.

Jessica Lynn Lopez, who lives at a home one mile from the Killgores, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder. She was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Authorities have not said if the three know each other or whether the stolen weapon was related to Killgore's death.

Killgore's husband, Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, was flying back to California after learning his wife was missing. Sheriff's authorities say he is not a suspect.

The Killgores lived about five minutes' walk from an entrance to Camp Pendleton, and the complex – like others around it – is full of Marines and their families who tend to be short-term residents and often don't get to know each other. Residents are accustomed to the buzz of helicopters and bomb blasts at the neighboring base.

Patricia Pagdilao said the Killgores were already living in the upstairs apartment when she moved in with her Marine husband a year ago. Cory Killgore visited with her husband to talk over beers and seemed happy with his marriage.

After Cory Killgore went to Afghanistan about seven months ago, Brittany Killgore went out often with friends.

"The only time I ever saw her was with friends, either on the way out or on the way home," said Pagdilao, 20.

The couple from Missouri were married in July 2010. Brittany Killgore cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing, which gave no other details.

Her cellphone was found in the Gaslamp District of downtown San Diego.

Darryl J. Wrest of Rolla, Mo., confirmed Brittany Killgore is his daughter but declined to comment futher. Killgore's other family members also declined to comment.

Perez was being held on $500,000 bond. His attorney Jeffrey Reichert said his client was has been in the military for 16 years, has no criminal history, is married and has lived in the San Diego area for 10 years.

This story stinks to high heaven. That marine may end up going to jail for this one.

(Which Marine?) A "marine" and one of his gal pals murdered this poor wife of a deployed Marine. Unthinkable! What's also unthinkable? So many strangers over the past week have assassinated the character of Mrs. Killgore based solely on gossip and bad reporting. Bless her soul. And may God bless Mr. Killgore...he has been through enough, and now to come home from the battlefield to bury his wife. Cannot comprehend this Perez and Lopez. They were renting rooms and living under aliases in a house now described by law enforcement as "...a meeting place for people involved in the sexually deviant lifestyle...". This was the scene of Mrs. Killgore's murder. Horrific! What must that poor woman have endured in her final hours, it makes me shudder and weep. We here in NoSDCo take this personally and very seriously, for we respect, honor, appreciate and value our military and their families. May Mr. Killgore and Mrs. Killgore's parents and loved ones be uplifted in prayer during this terrible time of shock and grief.

Being married to military personnel can be hard. It takes someone strong and understanding. I was married at 18 years old(he was just out of boot camp we married while he was home),married for 2 weeks new husband shipped out for 18 months to Sardinia Italy. Came home stationed in San Diego we lived there a few months then he was off on 6 month Westpak. I went back to our hometown to stay with my family. He came home after Westpak, back to San Diego then in 1977 he was discharged. Out of our first 3 years of marriage we were together maybe 1 yyear total

A friend of mine who was a woman Marine back in the 1970's said the area aroung Camp Pendelton was kind of dangerous and scarey. She said SOME (a few) of the Marines who were refered to as "grunts", could be quite violent and intimidating to women.
I don't know that it's true, it's just what I heard.

Hmm... normally I'd suspect the husband, so soon after a divorce filing, but it sounds like he wasn't around. I wonder what the relationship of the accused is.

A tragic loss of life in any case... seems like there are a lot of these awful stories around today.

A person can be a million miles away and still brought up on a murder charge. He could have contracted the murder thinking he had an airtight alibi. Who knows, he could have had a hefty life insurance policy on his wife.

I have a feeling that the women had an affair with the killers husband or boyfriend while her hero.husband was away at war... Happens all too often... I dont know why soldiers get married and then go away to fight war... Married or not she will screw on you!.

If this is the case, she ruined Lopez's life... Perez is a dog and will be a stray dog until somebody decides to bring him home to feed him, give him clothes and take care of him. Lopez had so much hopes and dreams of building a family with her future husband in Perez. Killgore came in and f'd everybody up, including Lopez's life. It is Lopez that got caught up in this web.

So this is what I'm seeing... Brittany Kilgore is a young wife with no husband. At 22 she's still a teenager and was probably hanging around with some. What made me put this conclusion together was from what the neighbor said, "She was always out with friends and always with friends." She divorced her husband so she can go sleep around with everybody else in her "friend circle", unfortunately one of the people she slept with was Perez, who is Lopez's lover, and the hole got erased.

Just because she was always with friends, doesn't mean she wanted to go sleep around.. Of course she was with friends alot, her husband was deployed for Gods sake! Most women do surround themselves with friends while their husbands are gone.
