Poll Position: Is It Important To Look For LGBT Figures In History? Vote Now!

It's Friday and you know what that means: Another chance to vote in our weekly Poll Position feature.

Today we're interested in hearing your opinion regarding searching for LGBT figures in history.

Because LGBT people have long been erased or hidden from historical events and because defining someone as having lived an LGBT life or experience is a fairly modern concept, it's not always easy to locate examples of LGBT people throughout history.

But, as we've seen in numerous stories on HuffPost Gay Voices, that doesn't stop people from trying to identify LGBT people if and when they can. Today we're featuring a slideshow (see below) of historical figures -- from celebrities to presidents -- who have faced gay rumors and/or have been claimed by some scholars to be LGBT.

Some people would offer that LGBT people have existed for thousands of years and by finding and celebrating these lives, the LGBT community is increasing its visibility, reclaiming hidden or stolen accomplishments and emphasizing how important LGBT contributions have been to the whole of history.

Others believe that there is no concrete proof that these figures were truly LGBT and that it is unfair or counterproductive to "claim" them as part of the community and we should concentrate on present-day figures and events.

So, tell us, where do you stand?

Vote below and then head to the comments section to offer a more detailed explanation of your views.

And if you've got a Poll Position topic you think we should cover, send it to us at GayVoices@HuffingtonPost.com.
