LAS VEGAS — A 10-year-old girl was sexually assaulted before she died in a bludgeoning attack that also killed her mother and left her father with critical head injuries in a blood-splattered Las Vegas home, police said Thursday.

The discovery that fifth-grader Karla Martinez was sexually assaulted expands the investigation of the brutal attack, Las Vegas police Lt. Clinton Nichols said. Officers went to the home and found the bodies after the girl's 9-year-old brother arrived at school Monday saying that his mom and sister were dead. A 4-year-old boy was also found unharmed in the house.

No suspects have been identified, and Nichols asked for patience, saying rumors were complicating the investigation.

Although police said Monday that evidence didn't suggest an intruder was responsible for the attacks or that a suspect was on the loose, Nichols later said investigators hadn't been able to determine exactly what happened in the modest three-bedroom home, or when.

"We've ruled out no one. We are looking at every possibility," Nichols said.

Nichols said Thursday that investigators were being deliberately slow and methodical.

"We want to do everything right," he said. "This case needs to be solved – the brutal nature of the attacks on a family in their own home."

Authorities found the girl and the mother, Ignacia Martinez, 38, beaten to death with a blunt instrument in separate bedrooms.

The father, Arturo Martinez, 39, was injured in the living room. The murder weapon has not been identified.

The bodies bore clear evidence of an attack with a blunt object, Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy said. He classified the deaths as homicides.

Arturo Martinez remained hospitalized Thursday at University Medical Center in Las Vegas with what authorities initially described as a severe head injury. Police said they weren't immediately able to interview him because of his injuries.

The two boys were in protective custody with the Clark County Department of Family Services, where Nichols said child forensic counselors have spoken with the boys but police detectives had not.

"We're not going to push them," the police lieutenant said. "You can only imagine what they saw."

Next-door neighbor and family friend Mark Groenert on Thursday characterized Arturo Martinez as a hard-working electrician who coached boxing in his spare time, kept physically fit and sometimes had disputes with another neighbor about parking.

"There was an altercation Saturday night, Arturo came home really late and one of their trucks was parked in front of his driveway," Groenert told The Associated Press. "Arturo hit the horn. He just laid on it until somebody came out. They got into a yelling match."

A Spanish-speaking man who answered the door Thursday at the neighboring home declined immediate comment in English and did not respond later to a telephone message in Spanish.

Nichols said police were aware of what he characterized as an "ongoing conflict" with some neighbors, but said investigators found nothing that they believed precipitated the deadly attack.

Groenert said he used to enjoy tequila and carne asada in the Martinez backyard, and his own grandson sometimes played with the two boys next door.

He said he saw police going into the house on Monday and Arturo Martinez shuffling out the front door before collapsing into unconsciousness.

Groenert said he could tell from questions that police later asked him and his wife that investigators suspected a sex attack.

He said he couldn't believe Arturo Martinez would harm his family, and said he thought the attacker must have been someone from outside the house.

"Something happened. Somebody invaded his house," Groenert said. "Somebody's loose, and they just killed a child and a mother."

I pray for the innocent children to have some degree of normalcy come to their lives after this traumatic ordeal. ITS SO VERY UNFAIR FOR THEM. GOD BE WITH THEM.

For some reason this feels like a schizophrenic family member. But also resembles the BTK killers first known attack.

The best thing that could happen to Vegas is for the Mob to take over again. You didn't see the filth you see on the streets now. It used to be a safe beautiful place to go.

The ignorance in that statement is overwhelming. You are aware that while the mob DID run the casinos ...... they NEVER ran the town right? That this sort of thing wouldn't have interested them at all...unless they themselves were involved in it? Wake up.

Las Vegas is rife with gangs and gang violence. Not the vacation spot it once was.

The whole country is getting that way. Definitely not the safest place in the world.

I live in Vegas, and I can tell you, it's safer than most other places. I feel safe most everywhere I go.

This was a crime of passion. It takes a lot of anger to beat someone to death. It was someone known to the family, I'd bet on it.

At this time authorities here in Las Vegas do not believe that the father was involved. His wounds were pretty significant and police don't believe they were self inflicted. The children have not been questioned yet. The 9 year old isn't even speaking. He and his brother have been placed with CPS. Police are considering the prospect of cartel violence. The father has a clean history though. Usually cartels kill the women and leave the men alive. This case has similar markings. I've talked with officers who were first on the scene and they say it was one of the most gruesome crime scenes they have ever encountered and so far we haven't had any crimes here in Las Vegas matching the MO.

For the life of me, I cannot believe that people think that political party affiliation has anything to do with this horrible situation. Put your mind in gear before you put your mouth in motion.

As for the nine year old boy going to school and reporting this matter, has anyone considered he may have been in shock? Our homes are supposed to be our sanctuaries, a place of security. I can't imagine hearing about, much less seeing, those closest to me dead and brutalized.

The women were bludgeoned_and the ten year old_raped???!!! Sounds very personal and from a very, very angry and twisted_individual. My heart goes out to those little boys and father, God only knows what they witnessed.

I think it is very telling that the 9 year-old did not go to the neighbors. Maybe he did not feel safe in doing that? The fact that the father, who was a boxing coach, was apparently beaten about the head tells me either someone snuck up on him or he did not feel threatened by who ever it was.
BTW turning this into a political thing, blaming republicans or democrats, is disgusting! The idea that people believe that others who believe differently than you are capable of this because they are from a different political party is beyond sick. We have more that unites us then divides us, if you actually understand the issues........Although some just pick a party and never think beyond that.....

Update:
1) The police are now saying that the father was probably not the perp.
2) For those asking about why the boy went to school instead of call 911, please realize that his house is only a few blocks from the school. Him running to school probably got authorities to his house a lot faster than a 911 call (remember the 911 operator from the Powell case?).

Source?

He also might have been hiding and not emerged until he was sure the perp was gone. How about we wait to know what exactly happened before decrying the actions of a boy who just saw his father, mother, and sister brutally attacked?

Kids also tend to go where they feel safe. Praying for this family.

I have read one comment saying to look through the GOP voter registration list and another about how Harry Reid will blame it on the economy. Please people keep politics out of this very tragic story. Those two little boys has just lost their mother and sister and their dad is badly injured. They are going through hell and all you can do is blame it on one of the political parties. That is sick.

How did the boy who went to school not know that the father was dead?? It says that he said "his mom and sister were dead."

The father wasn't dead and, indeed, walked from the house with police before he collapsed. I'm quite sure he was able to speak with his son. The real question is why were the females killed and not any of the males?

the girl was assaulted wonder if the father did that..ever since the Powell murders it does make you wonder about the surviving adult..
12:17 PM on 04/20/2012
True... but why wouldn't the father ask the kid to call 911?? I am by no means pointing fingers at the father.... The whole thing just seems a bit bazaar.....
