Greatwhite
A 2,000-pound great white shark was caught this week in northwestern Mexico.

Duh nuh...

Duh nuh...

Duh nuh, duh nuh, duh nuh, duh nuh DUH NUH!

A great white shark nearly 20 feet long and weighing 2,000 pounds was caught by commercial fisherman in northwestern Mexico this week.

The shark was dead by the time fishermen brought it to the surface, but they were still shocked by their discovery.

"We were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge, dead, great white shark," Guadalupe, one of the men who caught the ferocious fish, told reporters. "And then we thought 'what are we going to do?'"

They dragged the floating shark two miles to shore.

If the shark is truly around 19.8 feet long, it would be one of the longest great whites ever recorded.

the problem with this is that if that white is truely 19.8 inches long, then it would be twice the weight listed, they have 16 footers tagged that weigh 3500+ so thats either supposed to be 2000 kilos or its like 13 feet long

I just happened to see ' Jaws ' again this weekend after more than 20 or25 years.
THEIR Shark was 25 feet long and 3 Tons , HOW ABOUT THAT !

Well, the two of the three Guinness record's longest great whites were put at 36 feet and 37 feet respectively; the first was supposedly caught off of Port Fairy in Australia during the 1870s and the second shark was in Canada in the 1930s. And then they have record of a 41.2 foot beast caught in the Azores Islands. All caught by fishermen, I believe, if these accounts are even true and reliable, which is very questionable. Although I have seen it argued that sharks could have indeed grown to larger lengths in the past due to less competition from fishermen and better environmental conditions (i.e. more food).

More recently and reliably, though, you have Vic Hislops 21'8 catch from 1985, a 21.3 foot shark caught in Cuban waters around 1945, David McKendrick's 20.3 foot great white shark caught in Canada in 1983, and an un(officially)proven catch from 1997 in Taiwan measuring between 22 and 23 feet.

But for me, no matter whether they're bigger than Jaws was or not, it's all scary stuff either way. XD

Attached to its dorsal fin was a suicide note indicating that the two gallons of coca cola it drank every day was responsible.

What a waste. A beautiful endangered species murdered...........again
05:52 AM on 04/25/2012
Endangered, eh? Might want to check your facts.
08:41 AM on 12/09/2012
Not endangered, yet. Great Whites are considered to be a threatened species, a step away from being endangered, but are not recognized as actually endangered. They are currently ranked as "vulnerable."

I swam in the ocean off San Diego a thousand times, but if I lived in Australia, I think the thumbnail sized box-jelly would keep me out of the water.

You call it a Great White, when it looks more like a Megalodon (ancient shark species that was larger than our modern great whites)
08:51 AM on 12/09/2012
Well, for one, no one really knows what the Megalodon looked like as one has never been discovered - all we've ever found were the teeth. But it is considered to have looked much like Great Whites do, if not extremely similar, due to the resemblance they shared teeth-wise; much of the modern accepted appearance of the Megalodon is based off of the Great White's structure and appearance. So it isn't surprising people would find the appearances to be similar to one another.

Other than that, I would say that pretty obviously this is no Megalodon thanks to size alone; the estimated (although again, this could be off as this estimation was gained through comparison to Great White anatomy) length is put at around 52 to 67 feet. XD

too bad that shark had to die in a fishermens net. I bet he had some years on him. many different types of marine animals die in nets, like dolphins and sea turtles. so sad. maybe the oceans could use a break from all the over fishing :D

Hmm. I thought the Orca ate all the big sharks.

This poor ancient shark died in their nets and when they brought the nets up Jaws was already gone!

At least they'll make some money. Great White Shark jaws are very collectable and expensive.
The larger the better. they can at least get a few thousand for the jaws and teeth.
04:37 PM on 04/22/2012
It's a shame to see such a magnificent creature killed by stupidity and the want for fame.
08:23 PM on 04/22/2012
It was already dead, they just hauled it in.
12:03 AM on 04/23/2012
Let's clarify. It died IN the nets. Drowned. Yeah. That's so much better.
05:53 AM on 04/25/2012
Yes. That's reasonable. These fishermen set out for fame.

Ever think that they're unimaginably poor and need to feed themselves?
10:17 AM on 04/25/2012
It's clear they are fishing for food and as a way of life. They need to understand that in casting nets the way they do also kills creatures that they do not plan on feeding to their families.
