Giant Urinating Puppet Pisses Off Attendees At Liverpool Titanic Tribute (VIDEO)

Giant Girl Puppet
This 30-foot puppet was designed for a Titanic tribute in Liverpool, England, but caused controversy when it appeared to squat in the street and urinate.

Liverpool, England, may now be known as "Leave-A-Pool" after an event that included the presence of a 30-foot puppet of a giant girl who appeared to urinate in city streets.

The Giant Spectacular Sea Oddysey going on this weekend was intended to honor the 100th anniversary of the Titanic, but some attendees are pissed off by the peeing puppet, intended to represent an 11 year-old girl named May McMurray who wrote to her father when he was aboard the Titanic, the Guardian reported.

He never got the letter, but as part of the show, the puppet was supposed to walk around Liverpool -- where the Titanic was registered -- before reuniting with her "fictional" uncle. Early in the performance "May" stopped and appeared to "urinate" on the floor according to ClickLiverpool.com.

Thousands of spectators reportedly gasped as the puppet pre-teen squatted down and let loose with a geyser of water from beneath her green skirt.

The display left a sinking feeling in the heart of Cliff Ismay, the great-great nephew of former White Star Line boss J.Bruce Ismay, and curator of the Titanic Heritage Museum in Cumbria, UK.

"A performance like this is disrespectful not only to those who died, but also to their families," he told ClickLiverpool.com. "The centenary of the disaster should be about showing respect to those who lost their lives. It should not be any kind of spectacle and I'm very saddened and shocked that it has descended to this level. To have a giant puppet urinating in the street in this context is an outrage and quite disgusting."

Another critic of the puppet's public urination, a Titanic tour guide named Philip Coppell, said he was "absolutely appalled" by the display.

"This is a deplorable insult to the memory of the people who died aboard the Titanic and it's an embarrassment to the city," he told ClickLiverpool.com. "The French firm who are running Sea Odyssey must be ordered not to repeat this stunt of urination, or anything else so disgusting."

Other people, such as 10-year-old Nathan Kyle, who was dressed as a third-class Titanic passenger, weren't as bothered.

“I have been looking forward to this for weeks," he told the Liverpool Daily Post. "She looks brilliant and I don’t think anything like this is going to happen ever again.”

But puppeteer Patrick Smith of Royal Deluxe, the French-based company who put on the giant puppet gala, poo-poos the notion that it is offensive.

"It's what little girls do -- even giant little girls -- and all of the giants have many other surprises in store for the people of Liverpool," he told ClickLiverpool.com.

The gala ends on Sunday and show designer Jean-Luc Courcoult said the whole event -- including the urinating puppet -- reflects the personality of Liverpool.

"Passions for football, the revolutionary music and poetry of the Beatles and the legendary story of the Titanic give the city a strong, emblematic identity and the people a compelling warmth which draws me to them," he told ITV.

This was filmed live in the UK and people did not 'GASP' when this happened, a little surprised maybe but not offended in any way. Also your facts are all wrong, the Little Girl Giant is not a teenager she is in fact meant to be 6 years old. The giant also wasnt "intended to represent" May McMurray, the story was INSPIRED by her story!

Whether or not you think the urinating was distasteful many on the day werent bothered by it, and still applauded when she passed. As for the "Leave-A-Pool" comment again your lack of researching this event shows. This event brought in tourists from all over the country and around the world. Thousands lined the streets and cheered Giants throughout the three days, and the exact figures arent in yet but it is estimated that the event has brought in £12+ million pounds to the local economy.

In a time of economic recession in the UK, places like Liverpool have been heavily affected by it, its nice to have something that lifts the spirit of the community. The Giant Spectacular event certainly achieved that and the people of Liverpool will be talking about this (not the urinating) for years to come.

Next time you decide to write an article about an event that took place thousands of miles away, be sure to do your research and get the facts right! Very sloppy journalism indeed!!

I'd rather live in a culture that features puppets that pee in the street, than live in a culture that drowns its democracy in trickle down economics.

uh...could this be classified as "streaming news?"

That's what the French do, pee and poop in the streets. They are pigs!

Preteen girls don't go squatting and peeing in the streets. lol. Just because you dont go out of the way to offend someone doesn't mean you mean you don't apologize.

So, someone actually ORDERED the puppet, with pee pee abilities?
And the contractor that built the puppet and the contract of those that ordered the
"entertainment" never questioned or agreed to a peeing puppet?
Now see, a peeing puppet SHOULD be in the entertainment contract.
Someone responsible should have known about this beforehand.
I just hope the puppet does not poop.

Pee Pee Abilities??......Adults just call that Urinating....
02:01 PM on 05/03/2012
She doesnt. But i dont think you can "order" her. She was commisioned by Royal de Luxe along with a number of other giant puppets for their street art performances. What confuses me is why they didnt just ask Royal de Luxe to NOT HAVE HER PEE if they didnt want that. It's a part of their a number of the shows they do, and have done all over the world.

The Titanic never visited Liverpool, not even once.

Am I missing something about France? Do French girls really squat in the street and pee? Not even very little girls ever do that in Memphis, Tennessee.

You are correct but the company that made the puppet is based out of France...

"The French firm who are running Sea Odyssey must be ordered not to repeat this stunt of urination, or anything else so disgusting." ... But puppeteer Patrick Smith of Royal Deluxe, the French-based company who put on the giant puppet gala, poo-poos the notion that it is offensive.

Yes but the puppeteer and the company putting on the show are French and it was the french puppeteer who said "It's what little girls do".

That may be what little girls (indeed, all of us) do- but not in public!

Puppets don't urinate. Water is caused to be released by a human being, which, for the
record, does urinate. Puppets no, people and animals yes.

And why wasn't this mentioned in the attending video? Was this video even about
the above referenced story?
09:33 PM on 04/22/2012
Only in Europe.

I don't know, is it really any better than the people there celebrating the 100th aniversary of the sinking? Having a parade to celebrate the death of people dying in a boat sinking is disrespectful.

Good news for the ever present pick-pockets. Distracts the tourists from noticing they're in Liverpool, the anus of the former empire.
