Heat Top Bulls, 83-72: Tempers Flare With Hard Fouls By Dwyane Wade, James Jones (VIDEO)

MIAMI — The earliest Miami and Chicago could meet again is Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Good thing. The tempers could use a little time to cool down. And after a game filled with shoves and takedowns, the race for the No. 1 seed in the East is still going strong.

LeBron James had 27 points and 11 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 18 points and Miami tightened up the race in the East by beating the Bulls 83-72 in a scuffle-filled matchup Thursday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 16 points and Udonis Haslem grabbed 10 rebounds for Miami, which held the Bulls to a season-low point total and moved within 1 1/2 games of Chicago.

John Lucas scored 16 points for Chicago, which was again without reigning MVP Derrick Rose because of injuries. Joakim Noah scored 15 points, Luol Deng added 11 and Carlos Boozer had 10 for the Bulls, who split four games with Miami this season.

The teams combined for four technicals, two flagrant fouls and Miami reserve James Jones was ejected.

But above all else, Miami decided this one with defense. The Bulls went up 21-20 on a layup by Deng with 3:36 left in the first quarter, making them 10 of 14 from the field at that point. They shot 15 for 56 – 27 percent – the rest of the way.

Chicago (47-16) has games with Dallas, Indiana and Cleveland left, while Miami (45-17) still has matchups with Washington (twice), Houston and Boston.

In case anyone forgot that the Heat and Bulls don't particularly care for one another, the refresher courses came often in this one.

The first real salvo came with 6:05 left in the first half, when Jones was ejected after being assessed a flagrant-2 for excessive contact against Noah while trying for a rebound. Jones stretched out both arms to move Noah out of the way, making contact around the head.

By the end of the game, that play seemed like a love tap.

Wade and Chicago guard Richard Hamilton – rivals for years – raised the level of angst a few more notches early in the third quarter.

Hamilton led with his elbow and shoulder to create some space, and Wade took exception – so he delivered an elbow and shoulder back, sending the Bulls' guard sprawling to the court. The jousting then turned verbal, enough to merit a technical foul for each, plus a flagrant-1 on Wade.

And then things really got hot a few minutes later, not long after James was pulled down under the basket. James set a screen and was run into by Lucas, who gives up 9 inches and 85 pounds to the two-time NBA MVP. Predictably, Lucas went flying. Even more predictably, Lucas – who was leapfrogged for a dunk by James in Chicago's first trip to Miami this season – got angry.

After Deng fouled Chalmers to stop the play, and reopened a cut over his own left eye in the process, Lucas ran at James and the other eight players on the court at the time quickly converged on the area. It took referees about 5 minutes to sort out the mess, which only resulted in a personal foul on Deng and technicals on Lucas and James (who, upon hearing his name announced, shouted, "For what?).

James shrugged off the next hit, a hard foul by Chicago's Omer Asik about a half-minute later, converting a three-point play in the process.

"A physical Eastern Conference game," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after the third quarter in a televised interview. "It's an emotional game, a passionate game."

NOTES: The Bulls were 2 for 16 from 3-point range, meaning Miami's last two opponents have gone a combined 3 for 32 from beyond the arc. ... James made his first five shots, making him 23 for 27 over a span of parts of three games, starting late in the third quarter of Monday's game at New Jersey (6-7) followed by Wednesday's win over Toronto (12-15). ... Neither team led by more than three points in the final 10:54 of the first half. ... Jones' ejection was the first of his nine-year career, according to STATS LLC.

Plain and simple Derek Rose wasn't playing; if he gets back to 100% it should be very interesting.

True, but that's looking like a big "if."

He's starting to seem like one of those guys who's just always going to have something wrong (not saying he's not tough, or is malingering, just that some guys are just snakebit). He's a great one, I hope he can get and stay healthy.

Oh, he'll disappear as he always does when it counts.

There he is, with the ball in his hands. The Miami Heat lead the Chicago Bulls, 83-81, with just 11.4 seconds remaining on the clock.... http://www.balklanningaronline.com/

Also, where is the Howard feed? Bit of a big deal, yet no story? Claims that he won't play for SVG so he had his surgery early, tanking the hopes of his playoff bound team, even though he "plans to return" for next season?

HuffPo, if you need Sports writers, bloggers, volunteers put out a call. I'd volunteer to keep the Sports pages full of stories, esp. basketball during the playoffs.

MVP! MVP! MVP!

Seriously though, the Heat still have a long way to go before they meet again in the Eastern Finals. They need to play their hearts out for the number one seed. Even if they don't make it, this team needs the kick in the pants before the playoffs.

It's entertaining for sure. But in the end, Lebron Iverson will show up and the Heat will all go home a loser again this year.

yawn,i know its because rose was out.

The Miami Heat are getting completely ridiculous because they seem to wear pants when they are on defense and somewhere around half court change into a skirt for offense. LeBron and Dwayne, the so-called leaders of this team, are the worst. If you are going to sucker screen a man (Lucas) or sucker shove a man (Hamilton), then don't cry foul on the other end when someone taps you on the wrist. I wish they would both just keep their pants on for the whole game and let their TALENT speak for itself.

I can't stand either team. Here's to hoping that NEITHER comes out of the east.

So Rosalee, who do you want to see come out of the East? And while you're at it, who would you like to see come out of the West? And is there any team in particular you can stand? Are you a Knick fan Rosalee? Come on now. Tell the truth if you are. Or perhaps a Laker fan? I'm truly curious.

By the way, one of those 2 teams will be coming out of the East. And you may dislike them, but it'll be the Heat again this year. And yes, in the sprit of full disclosure, since I want to know where your allegiances lie (to mock them if you are a Knick or Laker fan), I am a Heat fan.

George, I am a Pacers fan and I would love to see them win the East.

However, they are a year away from being there.

It's now or never for Miami. Sadly for your HEAT, Rose will be playing when they meet again and Wade won't hold up over a long series.

The West looks wide open, but if I had to make a wager I'd put my money on the Lakers.

Oh Wow! you wound me. I'm so hurt. Nice comeback. Give me a break like I care if Lebron James dont like me. I'm sure they are many like I in Cleveland.

Here's to hoping I get my wish. And if I do you can come up with another smart comeback.
