KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan security forces have arrested five militants with 10,000 kilograms (22,000 pounds) of explosives that they smuggled in from Pakistan to carry out a massive attack in Kabul, as well as another three suspects allegedly planning to assassinate the vice president, an official said Saturday.

The reports of new planned attacks in the Afghan capital came a week after militants said to be part of the Pakistan-based Haqqani group launched coordinated assaults in the heart of Kabul and in three other cities.

U.S. officials say they have stepped up pressure on Islamabad to crack down on the Haqqanis, who specializes in high-profile strikes against well-protected targets.

Three of the five men arrested with the explosives were members of the Pakistani Taliban, while the other two belonged to the Afghan Taliban, National Director for Security spokesman Shafiqullah Tahiry told reporters. He said the men's orders came from militant leaders with ties to Pakistani intelligence. He did not say when the arrests took place, nor what their intended target was.

Tahiry said the seized explosives were packed in 400 bags and hidden under potatoes loaded in a truck with Pakistani license plates.

The men confessed that they "had planned to carry out a terrorist attack in a key point in Kabul city," Tahiry said.

He provided a DVD showing images of the truck and the recorded confessions of the men, but did not provide other proof to back up the claims.

He said that the three Pakistani members of the group picked up the explosives just outside the Pakistani city of Peshawar, and were under the orders of two local Taliban leaders named Noor Afzal and Mohammad Omar, who Tahiry said had ties with the country's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, or ISI.

Tahiry also said that security forces had foiled an assassination attempt by the Haqqani network against Afghan Vice President Mohammed Karim Khalili.

He said three Afghan men arrested on April 15, the day the Kabul attacks began, planned to kill Khalili at his home. They were equipped with suicide vests and small arms.

According to Tahiry, the order to kill Khalili was issued in Miram Shah by Haqqani network commander Badruddin Haqqani, the son of the group's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani. Last May, the U.S. designated Badruddin a terrorist.

Afghan officials often blame Pakistan and the ISI for supporting militant groups – including the Haqqani network – in the country's lawless areas along the Afghan border. The Pakistani government has vehemently denied any such claims.

Last Sunday's coordinated assaults included near-simultaneous attacks in the three parts of the capital and three other eastern cities. Eight policemen and three civilians were killed in 18 hours of fighting, along with 36 militants, according to Afghan officials.

On Thursday the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker said that there was "no question" that the Haqqani network was behind that attack and said Pakistan needed to do more to clamp down on the group's safe havens.

The comments were the strongest yet from a U.S. official blaming that incident on the Haqqani network.

Washington has long demanded that Pakistan target the Haqqani network. They are seen as more ideologically tied to al-Qaida than some of the other militant groups, and they have been particularly adept at sophisticated strikes like the one this week. The group was also blamed for a similar attack in September in which militants took over a half-constructed high-rise in the capital and opened fire on the nearby NATO headquarters and U.S. Embassy with heavy weapons.

The US must reevaluate its relations with Pakistan. As an ally Pakistan is unreliable even though the US provides billions in foreign aide to the country. Most of the time Pakistan pursues a national agenda that conflicts directly with US interests. Pakistani intelligent services work with terrorist or tacitly allow them to freely operated, provided they serve Pakistan’s national interests. It is absurd that each time Pakistan is caught supporting terrorism the US laments because it has asked over and over again the country to crack down on terrorist groups operating within its borders. Pakistan is determined to sabotage US efforts in Afghanistan. The US should cut way back on the aid it gives Pakistan.

(paul) the only problem America has in the eyes of all world leadership is ODUMMASS who now exerting horrific support for reverse racism which world powers continue to view America as an all white country and world power, and will not negotiate with his unsafe persona.. We have a security breech in his bogus defense weaponry which was destined to only nullify medium level weapons from the enemy. Reagan came into a very open situation where Russia could take us down in less then 3 seconds. Reagan demanded not only they disable for we always have something above a President in case of imminent threat to America's security. We went into Russia and watched them dismantle and then remove the exact amount agreed upon. Carter, Clinton, and ODUMMMASS have shown their stupidity in attempting socialism in a world power based on freedom at the risk of millions of American lives either here or military abroad. It is time he was removed forcibly and tried for treason. There is no convincing any country involved with negotiations this man is not only NOT a power he lacks intellect and wants total fragmentation of a country who always walks the line of Constitutional freedom hand in hand. He has intensified racial splits and economic omission through his countless empty efforts to convince no one of nothing meaning he never had the cabinet(s) or intent to do presidential duty.

Odummass. Now there's a Godly woman speaking. Republican Godly, that is.

There has been no attempt at socialism in this century, but the BS nurse doesn't realize that there were hundreds of thousands of Socialists in the Midwest from 1900-1940, and thousands there still. We didn't perish them and we won't now.

All you americans are so ignorant, just like NATO abandoned China to the Japanese Invasion after the Critical role they played in helping us win WW1, all you americans are quick to attack pakistan but are quick to forgot who saved the lives of your worthless soldiers in Somolia in 93.

You Americans burn all your bridges then you wonder why your list of allies is growing ever thinner, no one is going to give you a helping hand when the American Totaltarian Empire crumbles.

'American Totalitarian Empire'? You must have been well educated by whatever great and prosperous nation you come from! Your system, your life, and your well being must have nothing to do with Americans whatsoever if I am correct. Your country is completely self reliant. Your wars were won on your own terrain by your own citizens. This planet has America to thank for. Today's modern world has America to thank for. And THIS ARTICLE represents all but 315 million of us. One person's so called 'ignorance.' If you want a real opinion on anyone but your own country, which probably hasn't left as much as a stain on the underpants of society, then try actually living here in the greatest nation in the world.

Don't like America? Then America on-line might not be the place for you.

I'm from Canada buddy, America isn't the center of the universe and America is the greatest threat to world pe@ce, out of 300 years of existence America has only been at peace for 9 years.

You've destroyed the world econ0my and quite literaly raped our planet of natural res0urces and despite being the only country in the world to nuk3 another country you feel the need to p0lice the world, ontop of that you've left your younger generation with a crippling d3bt and mounting forecl0sures, whilst being the biggest Arms Dea|er in the wor|d.

America has also succeeded in creating the most blind, uneducated and zombie flock of sheep they call citiz3ns in history, Answer me this Capt@in America:

1:When the Ta|iban contro|led Afghanist@n and Strictly oppossed 0pium production there was obviously no 0pium, Ever since the Americ@n Invasion Afghanist@n has been the leading 0pium producing country in the world. why is thatÉ

2:How come Americ@ pump out 10x more Seria| Kil|ers and Pych0paths then any other countryÉ why is this

Obviously this barely scratches the Surface compared to C.|.A internationa| regim3 changes and inf|uencing Civi| war, Followed closely by F|ying Plan3s into your own WTC, Blaming it on Saudi Arabi@ and Then Invading Ir@q, Yes america must obviously be the Greatest nation in the world(Sarcasm Intended)

(bowman) as a true American I represent millions like me who refuse to stand up and allow the leadership voted in 3 years ago to ruin our relationships with our international brothers and sisters. When America votes in someone who lacks experience who is mentally deranged enough to believe he can revert to Hitler's socialism, and trick those people who have learned what it means to stand on freedom and our Constitution you must know it is due to the very freedom to vote based on age not on truth.

We remain a world power and espouse freedom for all.

We remain the harbor and shoulder for all if they ask and we have proven it time and time again historically.

If you indeed are from another country then you know our history. Sometimes the very freedom that allows more allows less. The past 3 years have been hell on earth for the very people who support democracy however, unless he is impeached and tried for treason which many of us believe he should be we wait a few months to began recovery here and world wide.

For those of you who want to know about the Taliban and what it was like to live under their brutal regime before we went to war with them,( some of you never heard of them until 9-11 , but they have been around for years before that ) watch the movie.." Osama ". It's about a little girl growing up under their rules. It will open your eyes to how brutal they are..And for those who think you can negotiate with them and change their way of thinking, you better forget that.....You can get it at your library ( if they don't have it ask them to order it for you ) or at your video store.

You cant negotiate, but you cant beat them with an army either. Right now, they are in Afirica building solid reputation with people by providing free medical care and food. They know better than we that this is a battle for hearts and minds. Ameircans are terrible at that as they want to turn everything into a profit oppotunity. Where's the money in feeding starving African children? AQ doesnt care about making a profit, they want suicide bombers and zealots. If we understood this issue at all, we would be pouing humanitarian resources and education into Africa as, it will be the population center of the world (second to Asia) in the next few decades.

I guess my comment didnt make it through..... I have said since 9/11/2001 that the ISI is responsible for the terrorist attack on the US. My contacts in US Intelligence tell me that the Bush and Obama administrations have both known the depth of Pakistani deception and have not addressed it as the public would expect. Its a cancer and needs to be removed. The ISI is our enemy and by extension the government of Pakistan. I vote to Nuke them now and be rid of the problem.

The Defense Hawks and the Intelligence Industry Spooks
are Hell bent on making sure their funding never stops.

Meanwhile their shills in congress are trying to cut education, health care, transportation,
and social security rather than give up one penny in military industrial funding.

After 10 years of blank check funding on a national credit card,
they have become addicted to Industrial War Profiteering.

Amazing how our perspective changes after 10 years of blood and treasure.

All along, Pakistan has been harboring and supporting terrorists right under our noses,
but the Arms Traders and War Profiteers remain untouchable.

What exactly are we supposed to achieve in the region?

It would appear that the goal remains unchanged after thousands of years.

To establish a safe passage trading route through the Persian Empire
and to exploit the resources of the region to our benefit.

It hasnt been under our noses... the polliticians in charge havent had the cojones to deal with their deception.

Screw Pakistan. Fly a few B-1 bombers over there , take out these rag heads and there base and while you're at it , drop a few on the ISI headquarters also so they straighten their as*es up.

sometimes you have to think why our enemies are our enemies... are we the bad guys? most would stick thier nose in the air and scoff at the notion yet most of us already know that our goverment and military are beasts and animals that we can not control. We ourselves would kill rats, mice, squirles and then feed our dogs and cats. The meaning is we accept what we can control and wish death to what we can not. If we cant control them and can not kill all of them we will control how they live the best we can in a never ending war to destroy what we consider pests. Thank you, and good day. Google ill will the mick or youtube it.
06:39 AM on 04/22/2012
No...I do NOT have to think that sometimes because I know we were atttacked unprovoked and these taliban support terrorism for one thing. The notion that the military are beasts is one born of the same jealousy and envy and covetousness as the ows, LIEberalsim and terrorism. It is hardly about control, as paranoia tells one. Enemies that blow up innocent people are, in fact more than "pests", they are a threat. I see all of the crackpot comments all over the internet, so what.
08:39 AM on 04/22/2012
You equate liberalism with terrorism?. Look at the people who are terrorists - most of the time they are fundamentalists (conservatives unwilling to change). (I don't see any liberals bombing clinics or assassinating doctors).

You want to believe that someone attacked the United States "unprovoked". There is always a reason for something -whether it be religion, a perceived injustice, whatever. If we understand the reason there is a possibility we may prevent more violence and deaths of the innocent. To disregard that reason no matter how benign it may appear is simply stupid. The lack of historical perspective by citizens, including yourself, is a real problem in this nation.
03:15 PM on 04/22/2012
Your comment was removed, but I saw it:Nobody is perfect, but men are men. They are asked to wait for permission to fire, they are asked to put their lives in needless danger just because we WANT to be perfect. There are individuals that ARE responsible for their own conduct, but that does not excuse your premise of ridiculousness.
