Green Festival NYC 2012: Live Video From Sustainability Event In New York

Posted: 04/21/2012 8:54 am Updated: 04/22/2012 12:35 am

The NYC Green Festival kicks into high gear April 21-22, as thousands of people gather to explore sustainable lifestyles and green solutions. This green consumer event has existed for ten years, but is making its first New York City appearance for 2012's Earth Day weekend, with 20,000 people expected to attend.

A project of nonprofits Green America and Global Exchange, the Green Festival will host over 125 speakers, as it "begins with finding solutions to help make our lives healthier-socially, economically and environmentally. Individuals, business and community leaders come together to discuss critical issues that impact us at home and abroad. Organizations and businesses showcase programs and products that restore the planet and all that inhabit it."

Speakers include Rebuild the Dream founding president Van Jones, Amy Goodman ("Democracy Now!") and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, among many others.

According to Green Festival Director Denise Hamler, “We affectionately refer to Green Festival as the largest party with a purpose."

Amy Amy Amy, this is Earth Day. Do we seriously have to hear YOUR story again, and again and again. We get it already. YOUR story is of value but TODAY is EARTH Day and we need that discussed not your personal agenda.

I was going to drive my Shelby Mustang to this event since that pesky glacier in Illinois receeded thousands of years ago, clearing my path; but I couldn't fit all the ash that has spewed from recent volcanboes in the trunk (too small). Would have made a great exhibit. I'll still attend if Al Gore will pick me up in his private jet....lol.

Carnivory is behind the evolutionary success of humankind. When early humans started to eat meat and eventually hunt, their new, higher-quality diet meant that women could wean their children earlier. Women could then give birth to more children during their reproductive life, which is a possible contribution to the population gradually spreading over the world.

The connection between eating meat and a faster weaning process is shown by a research group from Lund University in Sweden, which compared close to 70 mammalian species and found clear patterns.

Learning to hunt was a decisive step in human evolution. Hunting necessitated communication, planning and the use of tools, all of which demanded a larger brain. At the same time, adding meat to the diet made it possible to develop this larger brain.

While wide-eyed naive greenies gather for a day of symbolism... hard-working folks are on the job trying to make a frickin living; some may even become inventors and entrapenures. But as far as the greenies are concerned... tomorrow they will still be wide-eyed naive greenies, mostly without jobs.

The funny thing is that probably 99% of these "greenies" arrived at their location by using a gasoline combustible engine.

it's far less polluting than not being vegan.

It's NYC. Most people arrived by public transportation.

always seems odd to me that these events require using tons of resources like fuel for airplanes, etc....wouldn't it make more sense to host something like this in every city at the same time using modern tech like video, tv screens etc....connect with millions more people for probably abt the same amount of resources used.

I recommend direct action globally by the green movement. Take a stand, do your part, get involved, be a part of the solution! Use nothing that isn't recycled (Especially water), use no carbon based products at least three degrees of seperation from end use. By doing so globally you will be responsible for a reduction in water and carbon based consumer goods use. This will cause a glut in the non-sustainable chain and due to over supply the costs will drop as demand crashes. By your direct action the global cartels that control the planet will be forced to address a new emerging market for non-carbon based material and recycled goods. This will drive the free markets to restructure to address your needs and embrace global sustainability.

Can't get the leaders of less than 200 nations to agree to do squat but you could probably hold a green fair like this in every major city across the globe and see thousands to tens of thousands turning out at each one and finding consensus. AND coming up with some pretty good solutions for adapting to today's challenges.
