Matt Damon To The Atlantic: 'I Would Kiss George W. Bush On The Mouth' For His AIDS Work

Posted: 04/21/2012 12:45 pm Updated: 04/21/2012 12:45 pm

Matt Damon gave George W. Bush some major props for his foreign aid efforts in a recent interview with the Atlantic.

Reporter Jeffrey Goldberg pointed out that Bush increased funding for AIDS relief through PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

What ensues is a conversation that's more awesome than it is awkward:

MD: I would kiss George W. Bush on the mouth for what he did on PEPFAR.
JG: How long would you kiss him?
MD: Three seconds. No tongue.

Damon, who was being interviewed along with his Water.org co-founder, Gary White, goes on to point out that Obama should create a PEPFAR for water and sanitation. Damon concedes, however, that if Obama were to allocate money to Africa, he'd encounter backlash given the state of the economy.

"It's a different world now than it was when Bush was President," Damon tells the Atlantic.

In addition to government, Damon and White, HuffPost bloggers, have largely called on non-government organizations, utilities and philanthropists to help fight the water crisis.

Damon and White write in their HuffPost blog that the water crisis should be the next global movement in a similar way to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The two water activists cite statistics such as the fact that those living in slums pay 7 to 15 times more per liter of water than owners of nearby five-star hotels due to subsidies delivered through unjustly low water tariffs

"In the end we know that we cannot fund-raise our way out of this crisis," Damon and White write. "Ultimately, it will be creativity, innovation, and collective action that will allow us to achieve universal access to water and sanitation, and do so in our lifetime."

The problem, of course, is Bush gave that funding to African AIDS while cutting funding in the US.

Why? Evangelicals felt Africans deserved it more because they got it through straight sex.

What I particularly appreciate about this article is how Damon is able to give credit where credit is due. Our culture has shifted to such a tragic place where you are either an "us" or a "them". At one time, there were issues that were understood to be above politics. Those in staunch opposition generally, were able to put politics aside and get something done. Think back to Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan. Even Newt and Clinton were able to make big things happen. We've lost our way in this manner. So, as someone who truly despised so many Bush policies, I thank the man for his work in this area. Thanks, George.

"WE" haven't lost our ability to work things out - the GOTP orthodoxy has one purpose - to undermine and destroy President Obama. The GOTP does not compromise ever. This is a problem was created by and belongs to the GOTP!

Ironic. Your column on water. Earlier, before I read it, I was at the website of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, where I used to pray. I did not want to use my usual password bulls*$&. You know, it is a holy place. So I used holy water and soap. I was there because I wanted to buy a poster. St. Paul’s in the midst of the blitz. I worked directly across the street. It was a magical year - all about Eddie Vedder - and holy water and soap.

Matt Damon is right, Obama should create a PEPFAR for water and sanitation. I know that this is an issue that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is passionate about, but the issue is too large for one foundation to tackle. I live in a rural area where I pay a local provider money for water that I can't drink or even give to my animals because it is so poor and acidic. Yet my provider says it meets required standards for drinking water.

If water that meets the US standards for potability is undrinkable by domestic animals and humans, then whose to say a US backed water and sanitation initiative would really be effective. We need to improve our standards here first, then we can begin to address the issue globally.

If you'd bothered READING the article, you'd see Mr. Damon was responding to a specific question about Bush's funding for AIDS relief. If you think Matt Damon is in any way a fan of W or not critical of Bush's other policies, you've obviously led a very sheltered life.
