Panda Cam: Explore.org Launches Live HD Video Of Giant Panda Bear Cubs For Earth Day (LIVE VIDEO)

This year, you can celebrate Earth Day in the company of giant panda cubs.

On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million Americans rallied for a cleaner environment. According to the Earth Day Network, "The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts."

To commemorate the 42-year-old event, Explore.org, the multimedia organization of the Annenberg Foundation, is featuring a new live HD feed of panda cubs at the Bifengxia Panda Reserve in China.

“There is something magical and inspiring about watching panda cubs interact with each other in real-time," said Charlie Annenberg, the founder of Explore.org, in press materials. "The hope is that by viewing these cams, people will develop deeper emotional connections not just to the bears, but also to the planet."

The four panda bear cubs, who are named Zhichun, (“Spring”), Qingshan (“Green Mountain”), Zhaoyang (“Morning Sun”) and Ao'Ao (“Pride”), are all under two years of age. The feed will be live between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. EST; at other times, previously recorded highlights of the pandas' activity will be featured.

Explore.org's other live cameras include, among others, feeds of polar bears, jellyfish, whales, the aurora borealis and the Santa Monica beach.

The giant panda, or Ailuropoda melanoleuca, is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. There are an estimated fewer than 2,500 mature giant pandas remaining in the wild, according to the IUCN.

Earth Day, which is celebrated on April 22, began in 1970.

I have been watching the pandas for some time and I hope someone will check on one of
them for an allergic reaction to something; it is scratching itself all the time, looks very
tiring. We had a dog that did that one time and it was allergic to grass.

My daughter was there last month volunteering with her school, The Ross School. It was a wonderful learning experience for them!

While we generally refer to pandas as "bears" there is much discussion around whether they are bears, raccoons or their own species. They share some features of bears and some of raccoons.

Genetic testing of pandas by zoologists has determined that they are in fact from the "bear" family.

Who cares, it's about an enjoyable feed.

Misleading title for the article. Panda's aren't bears, they're more related to raccoons.

As we are enjoying looking at these adorable Chinese Pandas, please note that it is the Chinese demand for elephant tusks that is leading to the decimation of entire elephant populations. Clearly we all pick and choose what we cherish, but, until China puts the brakes on the the import of elephant tusks, my contributions will go towards anti-poaching organizations, not for the preservation of Pandas.

I can't even enjoy looking at them. The damn Video won't load for some reason. Oh Well, I guess it happens now and then. I'm on a new computer and everything is ok on my end.

What does this have to do with anything? Don't blame the poor pandas for Chinese cultural issues. Just because they're "Chinese" Pandas, doesn't mean they support killing elephants for their tusks! The decimation of the elephant populations is abhorrent, but this comment just seems like you want to be angry.

So this is what addiction is like. I get it now ... because I've become addicted to watching this bear. I just can't stop watching it.

Boy that seat looks uncomfortable to say the least. All the toys and play areas that look great and this one is sitting on a stick that used to be a limb. Typical just like kids you spend a boatload of money on some big toy they just had to have, and two hours after you give it to them you see them playing inside the cardboard box the toy came in.
