Senators Top Rangers 2-0 In Game 5, Take 3-2 Series Lead

Posted: 04/21/2012 9:55 pm Updated: 04/21/2012 10:13 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Craig Anderson stopped 41 shots to make Jason Spezza's first-period goal stand up, and the Ottawa Senators pushed the top-seeded New York Rangers to the brink of elimination with a 2-0 victory Saturday night in Game 5.

The Senators, the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, have won two straight and will have a chance to knock out the Rangers on Monday night in Ottawa. If New York can stay alive, the deciding Game 7 would be back at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

Spezza added insurance by scoring an empty-net goal with 55.3 seconds remaining, and Anderson was perfect in earning his second career NHL playoff shutout. He stood tall in the third period when the Rangers pressed for the tying goal. Since New York took a 2-0 lead in the first period of its 3-2 overtime loss in Game 4, Anderson has gone 116 minutes, 32 seconds without allowing a goal.

Henrik Lundqvist was nearly as good in making 28 saves for New York. The Rangers have come back to win only one series in which they trailed 3-2.

The Rangers join the West's top seed — the Vancouver Canucks — in being one loss away from an unexpected early summer. Boston, the No. 2 seed in the East, also is down 3-2 in its series against Washington.

Ottawa would be an unlikely participant in the second round, especially if the Senators get there without captain Daniel Alfredsson, who has been sidelined since Game 2 because of a concussion following a hit by Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin. Hagelin, suspended three games by the NHL for the hit, is eligible to return Monday.

The Rangers fired 15 shots at Anderson in the third period, but couldn't get a puck past him — even during their fourth power play of the night.

Spezza netted his first goal of the series 9:18 in off an assist from teenager Mark Stone, who made his NHL debut after playing junior hockey last week.

In the previous four games, the Rangers trailed only twice — at the end of overtime in their two losses. Coming from behind hadn't be part of New York's plan until Spezza broke out of his funk with his first goal of the series.

About 30 seconds after Ottawa killed its first short-handed situation of the opening period, Spezza gave the Senators their first in-game lead in five games.

Filip Kuba sent a pass from the Senators' end of the ice up to the neutral zone to Stone, who filled in for injured forward Jesse Winchester (upper body). Stone waited just outside the Rangers blue line and then made a short pass in front of him to Spezza at the bottom of the right circle. Spezza, who had 34 goals and a team-high 84 points in the regular season, showed off his scoring touch by deftly snapping a shot between Lundqvist's pads.

Spezza let out a roar and emphatically punched the glass in the corner, as if to release the remaining bit of frustration that grew during his drought.

The nervous Madison Square Garden crowd quickly became quiet and stayed that way for much of the rest of the first period, except to cheer a few big hits by the Rangers and to boo after New York's third failed power play at the end of the frame.

The Rangers had their chances to score first for the fifth consecutive game, or get even, but their power-play woes did them in again. After failing to score on a hooking call against Sergei Gonchar, and an interference penalty on Jared Cowen, New York nearly gave up a short-handed goal after Spezza went off for roughing up Rangers captain Ryan Callahan with a gloved punch to the face during an after-whistle scrum.

Defenseman Dan Girardi made a pass along the blue line, leading to a breakaway by Erik Condra, that was snuffed out by Lundqvist after Condra lost control of the puck during his sprint up the ice.

The power plays shifted in Ottawa's favor in the second period, but the Senators couldn't take advantage of the three they got, either.

Ruslan Fedotenko went off for high-sticking in the opening minute, Mike Rupp was called for charging Jim O'Brien with 6:12 left, and Callahan went off for roughing when he came to the defense of Marian Gaborik, who was knocked to the ice by a late hit from Ottawa's Colin Greening that went unpenalized.

Lundqvist was particularly sharp in the second, making 12 saves — including a handful of tough chances created by misplays by his teammates in front of him. He turned aside another breakaway chance when Milan Michalek got in close, doing the splits to kick out a drive with his left pad.

Anderson stopped 26 shots through the first 40 minutes.

NOTES: The 19-year-old Stone helped Canada win the silver medal at the World Junior Championship. ... The Rangers' power play was 1 for 11 in the opening three games of the series before a pair of goals in the first period of Game 4 gave New York a 2-0 lead. But since then, it has failed on nine straight chances. ... New York has scored only three goals in the past three games, including a 1-0 victory in Game 3.

Someone please explain to the Rangers that you cannot win without a defense and you cannot score from your own end of the ice...unless there is an empty net. But then, the Rangers haven't scored an empty netter in over two months! Remember, this is the team that during the reg season, gave up a 5 on 3 shorthanded goal!

Two or less goals per game....No defense....No scorers....no power play (What's that?) No talent= No Stanley Cup playoff advance.

The best thing that could happen to the Rangers is to be eliminated Monday night and bring this pitiful season to an end. The Rangers have been outplayed and out skated; they have been fortunate to have Lundquist in goal, if they had any other goalie, like Biron for example...the Ranger season would be over already!
At least if they are eliminated on Monday they will not have to face and be humiliated by any of the real teams like the Bruins, Flyers or Caps; unfortunately for the Pens, they drew the Flyers and didn't get to sweep the Rangers.

To all of you young Ranger fans: Save your snarky comments. I have been a Ranger fan since the days when you could walk into the garden and pay 50 CENTS with a G.O. button and see a ranger game!
I simply refuse to be sold a bill of goods...This Ranger team is mediocre at best.

I'm a Ranger fan from way back.I got away from watching hockey because the rule changes ruined the game as far as i was concerned but i got back into it this year. This Ranger team doesn't have a lot of heart.Neal has been a problem for the Rangers since the start of this series and they haven't done a thing about it.Early in game 3 was the time to send Prost {or whoever} out to hit Neal and then drop the gloves and let him have it.Win or lose it tells your team that nobody is going to take liberties on the ice unchallenged. Teams that let those things go don't win. Also the Rangers make horrible passes through the neutral zone. How many 3 on 2s have they messed up before they even get to the blue line? And thirdly Gaborick stinks. He's afraid to get hit. He's one of those guys that can score during the regular season but disappears in the tight checking of the playoffs. He coughs up the puck if anyone breathes near him.And last the officiating is horrible. I would like an explanation from the ref who called that penalty on Rupp for that perfect textbook hit. What do you call that? Two minutes for checking?

A Game 6 for Torts and the boys? No problem. Torts and the Tampa Bay Lightning were in the exact same position in the Final against Calgary. We won in OT there and came back home to win the cup.

GO RANGERS!!!! or Lightning North.

That was then and this is now! What some other team has done in the past has no bearing on what the Rangers do this year! How do the Lightening relate to the Rangers? You might as well talk about how Boston came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Yankees for the pennent; or any other obscure comeback story, for that matter.

The only way for the Rangers to win is if the Senators play without a goalie...and that's even doubtful as the Rangers can't hit the net anyway! How many times have they been held to ONE goal or have been shutout??
10:45 PM on 04/23/2012
And you were saying... If you look at NHL history, John Tortorella, Brad Richards and Ruslan Fedatenko were all part of the Tampa Bay Lightning historic Stanley Cup in 04', They were down 3-2 to Calgary and won up there in OT to force game 7. Bill, I predict a Stanley Cup win for our Rangers.

Exactly. It was a "good" performance by Anderson not a great one. From what i saw he made one great save the rest were routine. The Senators deserve to be leading this series.

Mark my words: THE RANGERS ARE NOW IN BIG, BIG TROUBLE. Like the article mentioned, the Rangers have come back from a 3-2 playoff deficit ONLY ONCE (the 1994 Eastern Conference finals vs. the New Jersey Devils). Unless their power play gets going in Game 6, THEY ARE GOING DOWN -- I GUARANTEE IT. In my opinion, to this point the second period of Game 4 is where Ottawa has seized control of this series. From that point onward, their defensemen have done a SUPERB JOB of keeping the Rangers away from the front of their net. Yes, I know the Senators were outshot by a considerable margin tonight, but their defensemen did a great job of not allowing the Rangers any second shots off rebounds.

It's Tortorella. He can win this. This has happened to his team before. The Tampa Bay Lightning in 04'.

Your absolutely correct. The Rangers haven't been willing to go in front and take a beating.I suspect that will change now but probably too late.
