Demi Lovato Opens Up About Drug Abuse: 'Being A Celebrity Can Be Dangerous' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 04/22/2012 7:09 pm Updated: 04/23/2012 4:31 pm

Demi Lovato is in a really good place these days.

The 19-year-old singer just released a new music video for her hit song, "Give Your Heart A Break," she's currently on a successful South American tour, and she recently showed off her healthy beach body in Brazil!

But the part-Mexican singer, who spent three-months in rehab in November 2010 to treat physical and emotional issues--including cutting, bulimia, and bipolar disorder--is now opening up about how peer pressure and loneliness led her to experiment with drugs in 2010.

“It’s something I don’t really want to talk about,” Lovato tells Fabulous Magazine. “What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I’d come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay ‘up,'" she explained.

Lovato says it wasn't hard for her to get drugs. “Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs,” she says. “They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass.”

Forced into rehab in 2010 by her loved ones, Demi says she's thankful she ended her addiction before it became life-threatening. “Being a celebrity can be dangerous,” she says. “Nobody says ‘no’. That’s why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me," she said.

This isn't the first time Demi is opening up about her battle with depression. Last year, the talented singer opened up about her struggles to Good Morning America and Seventeen Magazine, and released this beautiful letter to her fans.

Stay strong, Demi!

I'm glad Demi is off the drugs, but it's the same old story again and again and underneath the fan letters and public apologies is the fact that someone should could have prevented or at least halted the destructive behavior before it drove this poor soul into rehab and ruin.

Now I'm sure there are a lot of factors involved that I"m not aware of and that's great, but behind the velvet curtain and wishful thinking is the simple truth that too many people enjoyed the money, power and fame and look what it did...

All someone had to do was say "no", but they didn't, because it's always easier to persist in delusion.

I'm tired of celebrities using their "status" as an excuse for their problems. They have the same addictions and mental issues as everyone else. The drugs may be easier to acquire, but they are no different than any other addict.

dear Demi,
please stop using drug use and mental issues to keep yourself relevant and famous. You go to rehab and 1 month after you get out of rehab you ALREADY have an inspiring album and songs that you wrote yourself?? (no one questioned her release from rehab AND the albums release in roughly the same month??) really it takes a person less then one month to write an album and produce it?! and then are on the cover of people. AND then you go on MTV and have them follow you around glamorizing your problems. Then seventeen magazine, and numberous quotes and mishaps...PLEASE you wouldn't be relevant if you didn't shove your problems in everyones face and used it for money making. congrats on your wealth from drugs and disorders. SO many people struggle and don't shove it in everyones face WEEKLY with comments on HOW ITS SOOOO HARD. good grief. SHOCKED at how you were totally irrelevant, then you go to rehab and score deals sooooon after. SHOCKED utterly shocked.

she got out of rehab January 2011 and her album didn't come out till September 2011 she didn't start doing interviews till April 2011. So judging by your comment I would suggest you actually do some research the next time you decide you wanna make a comment like that. BTW she didn't go back into the studio till April or May 2011. Also you need to realize in interviews she doesn't ask the questions , shes the one answering them. She's not trying to become more famous from this she's trying to help young girls who are struggling with the same problems that she did, she has saved many lives by sharing her stories.

Exactly. Plus, maybe I'm wrong but didn't she record part of the album before she went to rehab? I remember something about Skyscraper being recorded while she was still very bulimic and that was why her voice is so raspy on it. She tried re-recording it again after rehab when her voice was clearer but it didn't have the same emotionality to it, so they kept the original version...

Addiction does not end ever. As in ever. Too bad there is not one celebrity out there who will stand up and say they are an alcoholic and/or a drug addict, that it is an incurable and progressive disease, but that there is a solution, AA. But nah, protect your false image first, die later.

It's amazing and sad to see all the hate for these young stars. I am around their age and cannot even begin to imagine what this must be like. There is a lot more pressure on them than any ordinary teen faces--like it or not-- they ARE famous.

Celebrity isn`t dangerous...stupidity is. Just cause someone offers it to you doesn`t mean you have to put it in your body.
11:38 PM on 04/23/2012
Okay, yeah we have heard this before from her. Just go back to rehab and clean up and stay clean instead of constantly admitting it.

I think she is an amazing young woman who saw how quickly the success and money at a young age could bring her down the wrong path. She is a great role model for young women. She made her mistakes, owned up to them and makes no excuses, but knew she needed to get help. Good for her!

Funny how we over look these drug dealers, for decades cocaine and drug use has been rampant in hollywood yet you never hear about someone, anyone being arrested as drug dealer to the stars. Most agents and actors know where to get drugs, someone has to be supplying them. Even when you hear about actors who OD you never hear about their dealer going down. Bulushi, Heath Ledger and many other OD and if someone get arressted for it it is the wife or girlfriend. Phil Hartmans wife was a coke head and killed him and herself. The cops have to know, there has to be many people and law enforcement agents and detectives on the payroll to overlook the dealers to the stars. Now that would be a good reality show.
