Obama On Brink Of Democratic Nomination

STEPHEN OHLEMACHER   04/22/12 09:07 AM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — It's official: President Barack Obama will clinch the Democratic nomination for president Tuesday, ending a low-key primary race that many Americans probably didn't realize was happening.

Obama is certain to reach the 2,778 delegates he needs to secure his party nod for a second time when five states vote on Tuesday. He has won almost every delegate so far, with a few exceptions in some Southern states that won't vote Democratic in the fall anyway.

But don't expect a big party, or any party. Campaign officials say they are focused on the general election, as they have been for months, and the all-but-certain Republican nominee, Mitt Romney.

All this is a stark difference from four years ago.

At this time in 2008, Obama was still in an epic primary battle against Hillary Rodham Clinton. The fight for the nomination didn't end until June, on the last day of the primary calendar, when Obama inched across the finish line on his way to the general election and eventually the White House.

There was a party that night, and why not? Obama was a big underdog heading into the 2008 primaries. Facing the well-financed former first lady, Obama was the junior senator from Illinois, a black man with a funny sounding name. No foreign policy experience. No military experience.

Obama's resume may have been a bit thin, but he parlayed his compelling life story and an inspiring message of hope and change into an unlikely run for the Democratic nomination and victory over Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

The partying was intense that night in 2008 when Obama became the first black to win a major party nomination to run for president. Obama's top campaign aides were in a Chicago bar near campaign headquarters. The candidate wasn't there, but the bar tab was open.

"There are red shots, blue shots and green ones. I have no idea what I'm drinking, and don't give a damn," Jeff Berman, Obama's 2008 delegate expert, wrote in his new book about the 2008 campaign, "The Magic Number."

"Time after time, we lock arms, let out a yell, and send it down the hatch."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt was succinct when asked if the campaign was planning a similar celebration Tuesday night, after the primaries in Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and Rhode Island.

"No sir."

This year, Obama's march to the nomination has generated little interest because he has no major primary challenger, no one who made the ballot in more than a handful of states.

In Iowa, which gave Obama his first victory in January 2008, Democratic caucus-goers didn't even vote for president this year. Instead, they held rallies to fire up supporters for the general election.

Democratic voters, however, are not unanimously behind the president.

In Oklahoma, anti-abortion protestor Randall Terry, who founded Operation Rescue, got 18 percent of the vote in the Democratic presidential primary March 6. That should have been good enough to win eight delegates, but state party officials said Terry didn't follow party rules and was not a "bona fide Democrat."

The delegates were awarded to Obama; Terry complained he was the victim of "political insider trading."

In Alabama, 18 percent of Democratic voters voted for "uncommitted" in the March 13 primary, so the state party will send eight uncommitted delegates to the Democratic national convention.

Obama is unlikely to win Oklahoma or Alabama in the general election. Regardless, LaBolt said Obama's campaign is busy building the largest grassroots operation ever.

"Now that we are on the doorstep of the general election, the choice Americans will have in November has already come into view: between a president who has fought every day to create jobs and restore economic security for the middle class, and a Republican nominee that would return to the same policies that led to the economic crisis," LaBolt said.

Republicans have a different view, now that Obama has a record to run on.

"He was a blank slate four years ago, and people projected onto that blank slate their hopes for the future," said John Ryder, a member of the Republican National Committee from Tennessee. "Now we've got a record. How'd that work out for you?"

Berman, who is not with the Obama campaign this year, said Obama may not be able to recapture the same magic he had in 2008, but he still has plenty of advantages.

"He can't have what he had the first time," Berman said in an interview. "But it's not like he lost everything. They know where their people are, they just have to figure out how to motivate them."

If Terry didn't follow Democratic party rules, then why did they allow him to put his name on the ballot. They say his isn't a "bona fide" Democrat. Does this mean the the 18% of voters that supported him are also "not" Democrats? 43% of the voters in the Oklahoma primary voted for someone other than Obama. Does this mean that all of those people aren't democrats too in the minds of the state party.

It's this kind of top down control that is the reason there were zero Democrats elected to statewide office in 2010 and if this type of party activity continues, Republicans will continue to have a monopoly of all elected offices in Oklahoma for the foreseeable future.

Kind of like John Wolfe getting over 15% of the vote in 3 districts in Louisiana- a total of 17,804 votes in which he should've earned 3 delegates but the Louisianan Democratic Party decided that they wouldn't give them to him- calling a technicality on some unmet deadline yet defying their own party's code. Basically told Wolfe they'd gladly take his $2500 for entering their primary but wouldn't award him the delegates he deserved and as far as the voters....well I guess their votes just didn't count.

..."He was a blank slate four years ago, and people projected onto that blank slate their hopes for the future," said John Ryder, a member of the Republican National Committee from Tennessee. "Now we've got a record. How'd that work out for you?"...

In so many ways, he's worked out just fine and getting better by the day, in spite of the complete opposition to the advancement and recovery of our Country by the dedicated Right.

The rumor is, Mittens might select Rob Portman for VP-- GW's ex-budget director.

How do you think that's going to work out for the GOPTeabagger campaign?

Just because it doesn't take us 2 years to work up enough enthusiasm for our candidate to vote for him in the general election like it has for Mittens, the Right shouldn't mistake that for apathy or a lack of support for the reelection of the only man qualified to continue bringing us out of the quagmire GW put us in (helped along with, I'm sure, valuable and qualified advice from people like Rob Portman).

Sadly, the fear many had of a black man running for office has now turned into hate. People hate Obama because he did try to solve problems. He has done more in four years than most Presidents do in eight years. He did not spend us into a big hole, the Republicans did. The budget and the country was in the worst mess ever. And don't forget Republicans he decreased almost everyone's taxes, like it or not. And I am not talking about the messy Bush tax cuts. And by the way, how many jobs did they create, those rich job creators?

According to all you Obama supporters, its a win - win scenero, cant lose bid for Obama to be re elected. If thats the case then why is the man wasting time going out campaigning for new voters to vote for him, and why is he fund raising at last count 250 million for his campaign for re election budget. If he had it all locked up like you supporters say he does. All he has to do is stay at the White House and do the job he was elected to do. And winning the election would be automatic and it would come to him. Truth is he needs all those millions to by new votes to get re elected. And he needs all those new citizens votes who no nothing about him to win. Face the truth Bush won by rigging the election. Obama is going on step better, he's buying the election.
02:22 AM on 04/23/2012
Because he is in a campaign. Nobody can win if they quit first. Obama has to raise cash to make sure that the playing field is equal... and when it is he wins hands down. If he was to raise no money and Romney brought in $500 million Obama would lose. Anyone would lose in that scenario. The system is set up to keep 3rd party candidates off the top ticket. Therefore you have to have A LOT of money to run for President.

If there is a problem w/ Obama "buying votes" w/ campaign cash then is there also a problem w/ Romney doing the exact same thing (with undisclosed/unlimited corporate donations in some cases)?

Obama is buying the election? Seriously? Wow! You really have fallen prey to the right wing propaganda machine.

Romney outspent each of his Republican primary opponents by a huge margin, and that is the reason he has locked up the nomination. If Obama can't match that for the real campaign, his message will be drowned out by the huge amounts the super PACS can spend on media blitzes that obfuscate truth and propagate lies.

Take a look at this chart. Even if you don't like the source, the numbers are real.

Romney and GOP scare the hell out of me. Everything will be privatized for Pete sake. Their buddies are waiting in the wings to take our money to another war. We cannot let that happen again.

Until Romney releases his birth certificate and tax documents, he is currently not eligible to be on ballots. Correct me if I am wrong.

"Southern states that won't vote Democratic in the fall anyway."

Don't be too sure of that. The other choice is a Mormon. It depends on the degree of bigotry they want to exercise this time. I suppose many of them will just stay home on Nov. 6.

I think they call this kind of race a "FIX" Nobody is watch or even care because no matter what happened, Obama will still be the candidate. IF he can not get it legally, he would get it illegally.

When this President took over the economy was a -8%, it is now +2%, a change in 3 years of 10%. So why do people and the Republicans keep saying the economy is not recovering. It is. Take a look at Europe. They are stagnant either at a negative like Holland at -5.5% or pretty flat. The UK is at .08% due to the austerity programs that aren't working. Just what are Americans complaining about? Not fast enough. 10% is nothing to turn your nose up about.

The economy is recovering not fast enough but it's recovering, and we are on the right track. How can americans expect Obama to clean the previous administration's mess in 4 years?Nobody can do it in 4 years and Obama does not have a magic wand . We were in a deep hole and we barely get our heads up . A lot needs to be done that's what the president said.

Well annyp, its because of two reasons. 1) your numbers are completely distorted. 2) your on the Obama re-election staff and you get paid to come on here and talk the talking points. I can tell because your statement has nothing to do with the topic. The Obama Plan "Keep saying it over and over and eventually people will start believing it". The flaw in your plan, people have friends and relatives out of work and that blows your propaganda right out the door.
