State Life Expectancy: Report Details Gains And Losses In Life Expectancy Around The Country

A new study is giving a glimpse at who's living the longest around the country, and the rate at which life expectancies are improving or declining county by county.

Women's life expectancies are improving at a slower rate than men's across the country, according to the research from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

"It's tragic that in a country as wealthy as the United States and with all the medical expertise we have that so many girls will live shorter lives than their mothers," study researcher Dr. Ali Mokdad, head of the IHME county research team, said in a statement.

Between 1989 and 2009, the researchers found that men's life expectancy increased by an average of 4.6 years. But women's life expectancy only increased by an average of 2.7 years.

Now, in 2009, the county calculations showed that men's life expectancy ranges from 66.1 to 81.6 years and the women's life expectancy ranges from 73.5 to 86, according to the study.

The researchers also found that, for women, the divide between the counties with the highest life expectancies and those with lowest life expectancies is growing. In 1989, the gap used to be 8.7 years. But in 2009, the gap was 11.7 years -- 85.8 years on average for women in Collier county in Florida, and 74.1 years on average for women in McDowell county, West Virginia.

The gap between the longest and shortest life expectancies for men was 15.5 years in the study, but the researchers reported that the gap hasn't even grown by a year between 1989 and 2009. In Marin, Calif., the men's average life expectancy is 81.6, and in Quitman and Tunica, Miss., the average life expectancy for men is 66.1.

The study also shows that black Americans' life expectancies are improving much faster than those of white Americans. In 1989, the life expectancy for a black male was 63.8, compared to 72.5 for a white male. Fast-forward to 2009, where the life expectancy for a black male was 71.2 years, compared with 76.7 for a white male. For black women, the 2009 life expectancy was 77.9 years, compared to 81.5 years for white women.

On a county-wide level, La Paz county in Arizona had the worst improvement in life expectancy for males, with men actually living 1.5 years less on average in 2009 than they did in 1989. For women, Fayette county in Alabama had the worst improvement, with women living 1.9 years less on average in 2009 than they did in 1989.

The county with the best improvement in life expectancy, on the other hand, was New York, New York, with men living an average of 13.6 more years in 2009 than they did in 1989 and women living an average of 7.2 more years in 2009 than they did in 1989.

Many of the counties with the lowest life expectancies in the country are in Mississippi, according to the research.

Ok...how does this Dr. Ali come to the conclusion that women are dying younger because their life-expectancy increase has started to peak? Isn't his job metrics and evaluation? Thats either a terrible yet obvious error in judgement, which no one caught, or its pure misandry at play. Nothing about the IHME metrics say women are dying younger, but the conclusion is that they are because their increase has slowed down....but its still growing! The real issue is the life expectancy gap between men and women. Instead of addressing that...he says that women are dying younger? UGHHHH NO! Their life expectancy is INCREASING! It just slowed down because its peaking...and THATS the problem? NOT that MEN are dying younger than women? And its an issue if men make an improvement that helps them catch up to women? Jesus....

Alabama citizens may be eating lot of non-vegetarian food to get high life expectancy. India has the lowest life expectancy among Asian countries because of their vegetarian food. Conversely, Icelanders and Japanese have the highest life expectancy because of their priority for meat and fish.

From social security website: http://www.ssa.gov/oact/NOTES/as120/LifeTables_Body.html
A number of extremely important developments have contributed to the rapid average rate of mortality improvement during the twentieth century. These developments include:
+ Access to primary medical care for the general population
+ Improved healthcare provided to mothers and babies
+ Availability of immunizations
+ Improvements in motor vehicle safety
+ Clean water supply and waste removal
+ Safer and more nutritious foods
+ Rapid rate of growth in the general standard of living.

Future reductions in mortality will depend upon such factors as:
- Development and application of new diagnostic, surgical and life sustaining techniques
- Presence of environmental pollutants
- Improvements in exercise and nutrition
- Incidence of violence
- Isolation and treatment of causes of disease
- Emergence of new forms of disease
- Prevalence of cigarette smoking
- Misuse of drugs (including alcohol)
- Extent to which people assume responsibility for their own health
- Education regarding health
- Changes in our conception of the value of life
- Ability and willingness of our society to pay for the development of new treatments and technologies, and to provide these to the population as a whole.

Women realized their biggest gains in life expectancy by just not dying giving birth, and being able to space pregnancies.

If we go back to the days where 50% of women died from having been pregnant or giving birth... we can stop feeling guilty for outliving men who drink, smoke and eat themselves to death.

How about the state with the least toxic environment and one that requires hard work to thrive in..... four seasons, cold, hot, rainy, etc....where people have to move and are often reminded that survival..... is part of man's road to health..... a relish much more of the simple things in life.... rather than all things manmade.

I'm reading a book called "Which Comes First Cardio or Weights" that speaks to what you're saying. Sedentary jobs even w/ regular exercise, do NOT yield the same health benefits as those that requires regular physical movement/exertion.

It's not surprising that Minnesotans live so long. Freezing slows down the aging process.

Why am I not surprised that the people who are most ardent against nutrition in schools, against science, against educataion, clean air, clean water, women's rights...

Why am I not surprised that they live shorter lives?

Given the vast and growing inequalities in this country, expect life expectancies to start falling in the US.

I'm shocked at these comments. Life expectancy is correlated with wealth not with being conservative or liberal. Can poor people afford a gym membership? NO, Can poor people afford adequate health care? NO, Can poor people afford "whole foods?" NO, Can poor people afford to live in safe cities/neighborhoods? NO.

Us making fun of poor people, minorities, or the uneducated just makes us seem like arrogant elitists. Getting an education is not about being smart its about having resources and opportunities, which a lot of people don't have.

Looking at the maps, a lot of those poor people continue to vote for the very people who make them poor.

That's so true. I've never been able to understand why. I asked a friend from Texas why she was so pro Bush (even during his 2nd term). Her answer, "He's a Christian". Unbelievable right?

And poverty wears a person down. It's grueling in every way. One must work hours and hours for the most minimal pay, barely scrape by, and the stress is awful. There's no time, no money, no resources for adequate self-care.

The way I do math, when you add years to a persons life, they live longer. So how is it possible that daughters will live shorter lives than their mothers if life expectancy is increasing? And this math-challenged person is the head of a team? Geez.

It might just be me, but I've noticed a trend where celebrities are dying younger, whereas in the past (15 years ago at least) people were dying in their late 70's or 80's. Now, one even hears of deaths of people in their mid 40's. I hope it's just me, but sometimes what we see happening with celebrities, is a snapshot of what's happening in the general population.

While it is not mentioned in this article, 35 countries have higher life expectancies than the United States. Interestingly enough, most of those countries have national healthcare.
