UN Global Campaign To Fight Malaria Appeals For $3.2 Billion To Reach 'Near-Zero' Malaria Deaths

04/23/12 07:52 PM ET AP

Malaria Cure

UNITED NATIONS — The global campaign to fight malaria is appealing for $3.2 billion to try to reach the U.N. goal of "near-zero" deaths from the mosquito-borne disease by 2015.

There has been "great progress" in reducing malaria deaths using bednets, insecticide spray and drugs, said Ray Chambers, the U.N. secretary-general's special envoy for malaria.

He cited a World Health Organization report in December, which used figures from 2010, saying malaria deaths had decreased by over one-third. Since then, he said at a news conference Monday, the world has delivered 160 million additional bednets "so we expect the number of deaths to be much less now."

Chambers said that in the last six years, the campaign to fight malaria has raised over $6 billion.

"Now we have to raise $3.2 billion to get us to the point of having a chance to be at near zero deaths by 2015," he added.

Princess Astrid of Belgium, a special representative for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, told the press conference ahead of World Malaria Day on Wednesday that 90 percent of malaria cases occur in Africa.

"Every time I meet patients, my main message is malaria is preventable and treatable but prevention and treatment require tremendous efforts and funding," she said.

I had malaria and it sucks. I hope they get the money. I hope they save some people. I do wish these countries would limit their population though. Seriously, you see the poorest of the poor having a half a dozen kids they can't feed. Then they beg from me and I feel bad and help out.

The funny thing is, it costs a good bit of money to intentionally limit a country's population growth.

Yeah, it probably does. Of course, it seems like a necessary evil in many cases.

I'd also take the DDT route for a whole lot less than $3.2B.

Stop giving them billions of taxpayer's work money. The gov has over $16 trillion in debt. Poor people should use a condom. They fail to see the cause and keep dealing with effects

Last time I checked, malaria wasn't spread by unprotected sex. But nice try.

Will the UN workers sent to supervise the effect of work there be put up in 4 star hotels, and party the nights away. Will it cost more to house them and feed them than what is being spent to get rid of malaria? Maybe they can help spread some other problem there like they did in Haiti?
Bring back DDT. Too simplistic, and proven to work.

How about eliminating ignorance? Vote for change this November and we can achieve that goal...

Start up a dedicated effort by using DDT.... one of the best ways to fight mosquitoes and malaria.

Take most of that money to build a good sanitation system.

I forgot. That would end professional charities and NGO vamps.

That is a very good idea, but why should we do that? I think if they wanted that, let them do it.

They always find enough money to buy guns, and want us to pony up for their medicine? Why?! I'd support and exchange program though, for every AK-47 they turn in, we'd pay for 2 malaria shots.

Maybe, but this is the same conclusion others have gotten when going to Africa and seeing what has happened, and knowing what all those years of aid has accomplished.

You should know why that doesn't work. If all of the Africans had guns that would be the case, but only a small portion of the Africans have guns and they use them to control the rest of the population. These are the same people who already have access to anti-Malarial measures and other such necessities.

What a shame. Just think if Bush and the media didn't hype the wars there wiould be more than enough money for humanitarian causes. We pay for our ignorance and our bellicosity.

Well, for once Bush spending money on guns was smarter. All the West's billions of humanitarian good will towards Africa, has destroyed them. It is time to mind our own business and force them to be grown ups.

So you had problems with Bush spending money on wars but you are OK with spending money on the same wars - and escalating Afghanistan while committing us for another decade. As well as his bombing Libya, deploying troops to The Congo and Marines to Australia to (LOL) "counter" China. No problem with any of those adventures?
