Starbucks To Open 6 Stores In Disney Parks

By CANDICE CHOI 04/23/12 11:55 AM ET AP

NEW YORK — Starbucks is about to perk up "the happiest place on earth."

The Seattle-based coffee chain on Monday is announcing a partnership to open a store inside each of the six Disney properties in California and Florida.

The first will open this summer at Disneyland California Adventure in Anaheim. The other locations will be at the nearby Disneyland Park and at the parks in Orlando, Fla. – Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. The companies are still finalizing when the remaining stores will open.

Starbucks Corp. and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a unit of The Walt Disney Co., did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

The companies said each of the Starbucks stores at Disney will be designed to blend in with the property. Passersby might have to look twice to notice that it's a Starbucks.

At Disneyland California, for example, the store will be called the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Cafe, after the characters in the Three Little Pigs. The Starbucks logo will not be posted outside, although the name will be printed vertically on posts on either side of the entry way.

The cafe will be located near the park entrance, which is designed to conjure an idealized version of a Los Angeles neighborhood where the animator Walt Disney lived during the 1920s and 1930s. The inside of the cafe will be decorated with Spanish tiles, stained glass and dark wood paneling to fit that theme.

Baristas will wear aprons that Disney says will match the decor, rather than the forest green aprons employees wear at other Starbucks. The cups will also be co-branded. In addition to the full Starbucks menu, the coffee chain said its stores may offer a "Mickey Mouse cookie or two."

Starbucks also opened a store in Disney Village at Disneyland Paris in June 2009. But this is the first time the coffee chain will have a store inside the theme park.

Perfect, because I know the one thing I really want on a hot August day in Anaheim, as I try to make my way through wall-to-wall people in search of more "fun" is a steaming cup of overpriced, over-roasted coffee.

Amen!!! I'm from the Pacific Northwest... and on one trip, you would have thought we saw George Clooney or "Brad and Angie" at Universal Citywalk when we did a day trip there and spied the Starbucks. At least two of us were going through coffee withdrawals.

As for the peeps talking about wanting the hot cup of coffee in August - well, there are some of us who would gladly have some first thing in the morning.. AND there is such a thing as an iced coffee!!!

Have Starbucks execs ever set foot in a Disney park? It's 80 degrees in the shade all day long and you spend twelve hours walking around in the hot sun. How is coffee supposed to help with that?

Don't forget, there are more than 20 iced Frappuccino flavors sold at Starbucks. So people can cool off. Never mind, the 50-60 grams of sugar per serving....

You should try going to Disney during the other three seasons... I've been to Disneyland when the news reports were all about the fears about the orange groves freezing, and never had more fun. (and had to wear gloves and scarves - and I'm from the land of Starbucks, and we all break out the sandals and the capris when it is 65 or warmer) Paris Disneyland wasn't much warmer in October either, now that I think about it!

Given Starbucks and Disney have some of the highest prices, will a regular coffee cost $20? I guess it is good to get real coffee in the Magic Kingdom - but at what cost?

When you're at a theme park, it's like being on a desert island! Soon, that dollar bottle of water is looking mighty good, even at five dollars... Perhaps there are still those that pack their own stuff, but many don't want to cart it around, or just don't plan on making anything.

Starbucks could sponsor a roller coaster that rides kinda jittery for awhile and then crashes hard at the end.

Yuck, I truly dislike Starbucks regular coffee. Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's are both better. They used to make a good brownie but even that has gone downhill. Now their frappe's are ok especially with lots of whipped cream.

At least it won't be brazenly obvious you are in a Starbucks. I, for one, don't want to be bombarded with "reality" inside Disneyland. You go to a Disney park to escape the outside world, not embrace it.

Corporate sponsorship of food venues at Disney parks goes all the way back to Walt and the opening of Disneyland. It saved the company money to bring in someone else to run the shops. Do you remember things like the "Aunt Jemima Pancake House" or the "Carnation Plaza" or how about the "Hallmark Card Shoppe"? All of these were brought in by Walt and Roy at the beginning. So bringing in a Starbucks is absolutely nothing new.

I still remember how great the ice cream was at Carnation Plaza, and haven't been there for years. lol.
Can't say I'm looking forward to a $20 dollar cup of coffee to go with my $30 dollar burger and fries though.
