Trebs Oil Field: Thousands Of Tons Of Oil Spill From Russian Field Developed By Lukoil And Bashneft

AP  |  Posted: 04/23/2012 8:40 am Updated: 04/23/2012 11:41 am

MOSCOW (AP) — Up to 2,000 tons of oil have spilled from a major field in northern Russia after workers struggled to contain the leak for two days, officials said.

The accident happened at the Trebs oil field in the Nenets Autonomous District on Friday following work on an exploratory well. The oil had been gushing for nearly two days before the workers finally capped the well Sunday morning, Emergency Ministry officials said.

Vladimir Bezumov, chief of the Russian Environmental Agency in the area, said the weekend spill could have produced between 800 and 2,000 tons and contaminated at least 8,000 square meters (86,100 square. feet) of land. Another 6,000 square meters (64,600 square. feet) of land are believed to have been slightly damaged.

Bezumov said it was too early to speak of the causes of the accident, but he said it was likely a combination of technical issues and human error.

The oil field is developed by a joint venture between Russia's largest private company Lukoil and another Russian oil major Bashneft. It holds some 153 million tons of oil.

Russian environmental officials will be preparing a lawsuit against the oil companies after the clean-up is over, Bezumov said.

The area around the oil field is largely unpopulated but the oil spill has damaged pastures used by local reindeer herdsmen.

Russia has not seen major oil spills for years. But maintenance of pipelines in old fields is poor, and oil leaks from rusty pipes and poorly sealed wells daily, experts say. An AP investigation last year showed that at least 1 percent of Russia's annual oil production, or 5 million tons, is spilled into the environment every year.

I was just reading about the BP spill. 50,000 barrels per day for months? The contaminated area at Trebs was under two acres--seems almost like a triumph of technology compared to the Gulf or the sabotage Saddam Hussein did to the oil fields in Kuwait as his army withdrew in 1991 (4 million bpd).

The 1% of Russia's huge total output that the article reports gets spilled non-stop in the course of piping it out of the country is staggering, however.

There ARE already aternative energy sources. Just not out to the mainstream atm. Their current costs to produce on a grand scale are just not feasible atm. Until governments/ private investors go together & offset the cost.

There are some amazing inventions out here already. The science is already here. It's just not out for most of society outside of various government & science circles. I think if society holds together for 2 more decades you will be seeing all sorts of things out here finally make it to the mainstream. Until then, those who are fortunate enough to be in various government & science circles, many would envy what is already here.

Now to survive the coming events civilization has yet to face..............As the saying says, "You ain't seen nothin yet!

Hope you're right. I heard on NPR that we've been pumping crude for 150 years, in ever-increasing amounts, and the proven reserves of accessible crude should be *gone* in about another 40 years, if the usage rate continues to increase, as China and India virtually guarantee it will. I know some optimists say we're bound to find more in the mean time, but that implies we will immediately push all that extra carbon into the atmosphere in exchange for a little convenient transportation and lights that turn on when you flip a switch.

"This stuff is much too precious to burn."
04:14 PM on 04/24/2012
This is actually entirely false and a very common misconception about oil. Currently oil companies only process and extract at most 50% of an oil reserve. This is due to the fact that the oil (at the 50% level) is no longer economically feasable to extract. Rising gas prices will ensure our future oil reserves are extracted. In addition, remember that we are limited by technological limitations when it comes to deep sea drilling and exploration so all of these numbers are just estimates and do not predict the future of oil on earth. Remember we have explored further on other planets then we have of our oceans floor.

Ever heard of the La Brea Tar Pits? Perfectly natural, perfectly poisonous. It's still oozing and will for a long long time. Nature has plenty of places that are taboo to wildlife of any kind - volcanoes for instance. So, if we have a few places that are sullied, it's not a big deal. Nature will either replenish and clean the place or not - but the area involved is miniscule and the benefits of the oil are huge.

yeah until it is in your backyard...then I like to hear how miniscule you think it is....these companies make millions of dollars...more money than anyother industry...they spend next to nothing on new and inventive ways to clean or prevent oil spills....oh wait ...one company said they spent several millions on more boons, more chemicals and...wait till you hear this...they actually added two more planes to help disperse deadly chemicals into the water over the spills....just more of the same things that have not helped in previous oil spills...but what more can we ask of this million, no billion dollar industry...

People against oil are ignoring the bigger picture. But first, nuclear is definitely the better alternative to our energy needs. Electric cars - apparently the batteries use more oil and coal to create and recharge than if we were to just use gasoline (or, even better, natural gas).

The bigger picture is that oil is in so many things we use on a daily basis. Forget using oil for energy or vehicles. We would have to totally re-invent everything from plastics to medical equipment to diapers and on and on and on. This simply will not happen. It's time to face the reality of the oil situation.

Yes, let's depend on it less. Let's develop other sources of energy (or use those we already have). Let's allow less pollution into our atmosphere. But at the same time, keep producing oil because if that price goes down, ALL prices go down. And if all prices are down, people and businesses have more money to invest in things like cleaner, greener energy.

They will clean it up. Nature has released oil from the ground many times before. Just like on ther beverly hillbillies. And lets get rid of the myth that this is a fossil fuel. It is made deep in the earth all the time and we are not running out. There were hardly enough dinosaurs and plants to give us what we had. How many graves were opend and we found oil.? Were we not told it would be all gone in the 70's ? Just more lies and ways to tax us like that would help even if it was true. I have had enough of chicken little dictating our energy policies.

I have come to grips with the fact that as long as there is greed and lies and cover ups our planet is doomed, hence we are all going to die from something we did to ourselves. could be a slow death from some illness that all of these things cause or could be a rapid death from us screwing with our eco-balance and some massive so called natural disaster. take your pic

You mean like Obama's lies about the feasability of electric cars? The ones that don't work? The windmills are never generate enough power to make up for the electricity used in their construction? You mean those lies and greed? You mean Mr. Millionaire, himself, Al Gore - who uses 40 times the electricty of a normal household and plants trees to make up for his squandering. Oh, I almost forgot - carbon monoxide - a necessary ingredient to oxygen producing plants, is a "pollutant." That is a hoot - that anyone would beleive that is nuts. You might as well say that water is a pollutant because children drown in the bathtub.

do your homework pal...there has been more drilling for oil under the Obama administration than there ever was under bush...of course bush was trying to get oil without drilling, (iraq, afghanistan)...but hey....as for carbon monoxide not being a poison...well you won't mind doing an experiment and breathing in only carbon monoxide for an hour or so, right...let us know how that works for ya....

If carbon monoxide is so good then get in the garage close the doors turn on the car and just sit there a while and take a deep breath but before you do that make sure you have some house plants in there with you as I am sure they will clean the air and make rapid oxygen to save your life....Trees cannot produce as much oxygen or as quickly as cars and humans can produce CO2. and since the global population is growing and we keep cutting down mass amounts of trees for the sake of industry...what trees are you referring too? I am not saying there is an easy solution but I am saying it is going to kills us if we keep raping the land and putting more pollutants in the air. As to the politicians you referred to or any other political rapist of the globe that gets into office...yes they all stink and are greedy liars who try to cover up their action of deceit

A good reason for developing our own oil resources in th USA. Countries like Russia and China and other developing nations dont give a hoot about the environment. We at least have some respect for keeping the planet clean. Our dependence on foreign oil only makes them more hasty and careless to get our American dollars.

...and an even better reason for giving more serious attention to nuclear energy. Nuclear accidents don't have to happen, but if they do, then they are no worse than this in either extent or duration. We will eventually run out of oil, although it is debatable exactly when. In contrast, there is enough thorium to fuel nuclear plants for the next 100,000 years, ending energy and related economic worries for the foreseeable future.

and there is also old nuclear warheads. the peaceniks should be happy to turn those into clean energy. the French have the right idea of having only one standard design for a nuclear plant which saves a lot of time and money in construction by eliminating approval times.

The oil companies don't care about the environment. The only reason they do environmentally safe things is because of the laws we have in this country. When these companies drill in other pars of the world they don't follow our environmental laws. They do whatever they want in countries with no environmental laws. The big oil companies continually complain about the cost of obeying our laws and spend billions trying to get them changed.

26 years in the oil and gas industry offshore, please read this and try to understand what I am saying. First of all, I consider myself a green person. My wife and I try to recycle, buy stuff that does not damage the environment, we do not shop at Wal Mart. But the common denominator is, we both have cars that burn gasoline as do how many of you???? Secondly, there is no oil shortage, oil and gas are renewable resources. The same wells drilled in Saudi Arabia in 1947 are producing today. Price manipulation and speculation is the reason for gas price increases and there are numerous guilty parties on that issue. Alternative energy sources should be pursued vigorously, no question about it. There are too many of us on this planet burning fossil fuels and/or denuding our forests for fuel to burn. That needs to be stopped or at least curtailed to a point the atmosphere can handle the carbon emissions. A realistic approach to our energy problems and not knee jerk reactions or what is politically expendient are what we need.

With abundant and reliable nuclear energy, we could synthesize gasoline from natural gas, coal, or any convenient organic substance, forever ending our dependence on foreign oil. There is enough thorium to fuel nuclear plants for the next 100,000 years, ending energy and related economic worries for the foreseeable future. We need a civilian version of Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear US Navy, to defuse public fear of nuclear energy.
09:50 AM on 04/24/2012
Oil and gas are NOT renewable. Those wells maybe producing again but that has to do with the well going dry and filling back up with oil that was already in the ground but not under the well. New oil was not being created in that time. It takes 10's of millions of years to make oil. There is a finite amount of oil and gas the world today.

The German war industry developed synthetic oil from coal. A nuclear plant can generate enough power to make synthethic oil readily available. The point is that combustible liquids offer a portability to energy that electricty doesn't. So, the world is finite - do you want to stop living here because of that, or do you want to use your objective brain to solve problems?
