"The Amazing Spider-Man" isn't coming out for another three months, but that doesn't mean "The Amazing Spider-Man" sequel can't get up and running. (Never mind that "Spider-Man" may or may not hit at the box office.) To that end, Sony has hired popular screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to write the script for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

"It's a thrill to have Alex and Bob put their stamp on this franchise that we all love so well," producer Avi Arad said in a statement. "They have an innate understanding of what makes Peter Parker not just a superhero, but a hero for all of us."

Producer Matt Tolmach echoed that excitement. "[Alex and Roberto] have been friends of ours for a long time and they have an exciting take on the franchise -- we're thrilled to have them join the Spider-Man family."

Kurtzman and Orci have become Hollywood's go-to screenwriting tandem for big-budget tentpoles. The pair collaborated on the script for "Star Trek," as well as "Transformers," "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Mission: Impossible III." They also helped create the Fox series "Fringe" with J.J. Abrams and are currently working on "Star Trek 2."

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt -- who wrote "The Amazing Spider-Man" -- was initially hired by Sony to write the sequel last spring.
