Michael Bullerdick, 'Essence' Managing Editor, Is Reassigned After Racist Facebook Comments

Michael Bullerdick has resigned from his post as Managing Editor at Essence magazine and has “accepted a position in another division," reports MediaBistro.com.

The abrupt resignation comes in the wake of Bullerdick's right-wing and racist Facebook comments being exposed to the publication.

Although Bullerdick's Facebook page is private, a reader or presumably a "friend" took screen shots of his page, which was riddled with racist content and sent them to the website Journal-isms.

According to NewsOne.com, on one page Bullerdick, who is a whiite man, calls civil rights leader Al Sharpton as a “Race Pimp”; goes after President Barack Obama as a radical; touts videos by the late Andrew Breitbart, who was responsible for getting former USDA official Shirley Sherrod fired; and attacks Attorney General Eric Holder.

The screen shots containing these extreme views were then emailed to Essence on Friday by Journal-isms with the following message:

"Essence readers would be shocked to find that Bullerdick, who under the prodding of Time Inc became the first white male editor at the magazine last year, openly espouses extremist Right-wing views that run counter to what Essence has historically stood for."

In response, Constance P. White, Essence's editor-in-chief released the following statement:

"As editor-in-chief, I’m responsible for all editorial content for Essence. I hired Michael to manage the production schedule of Essence. As head of production, he does not attend editorial idea meetings, nor does he get involved in the editorial direction of the magazine."

Whether that's true or not, Bullerdick's comments clearly struck a no-nonsense cord and shortly after White's statement an Essence spokesperson confirmed that “by mutual agreement, Michael has accepted a position in another division.”

We assume this division is completely detached from the Essence brand and lies somewhere else within Time, Inc.'s deep portfolio, however no details have been released.

This isn't the first time Essence has had to fight a racial firestorm. It's been almost two years now that Ellianna Placas, the black publication's first white fashion director was hired. Despite the initial outrage that a black person was not offered the job, Placas still holds the position.

The current uproar surrounding Bullerdick's resignation might shine the singeing spotlight back onto Placas--who in fact does have a direct effect on editorial content.

So what? Don't be so intolerant. White people AND black people are expected to tolerate other points of view, without getting so angry about it.

I don't think that labeling Al Sharpton as a "race pimp" would be classified as an "extremist view" by the majority of whites. Most probably would choose different verbiage, but not definition. Why would that magazine hire white people anyway? That makes as much sense as a male Hooter's girl.

He was just some flunky paid to make sure that the magazine was printed on time. And, why is calling Al Sharpton a "Race Pimp" a racial comment? Isn't that what he is?

"He was just some flunky paid to make sure that the magazine was printed on time"

I am so sick of these backhanded racist comments! Under which conditions can the current management NOT ensure that the magazine will be printed on time? 'Because they're Black' is exactly what your passive-aggressive BS is all about! At least have the balls to spew your racist tripe up front! And yes 'race pimp' is another backhanded, cowardly attempt to portray an easy right-wing target as a 'troublemaker', but you already knew that. Your username 'db' accurately reflects EXACTLY what you are!

Concidering this magazine has not been black owned in years(Time Inc/Time Warner/Ted Turner) this is not a surprise. I knew something was wrong when one particular issue came out years ago and they interview women on what black women were doing wrong to keep black men, the last straw was some white girl and at the end of her statement it was written "well I will really never know what black women go through". In the same issue there was an article that mention black men going to Brazil because black women don't make them feel man enough. That was the last time I every bought or read this trash, it use to be a magazine for to address the needs of black women. Since it has been white owned, it is a platform to give backhanded advice that mess with the minds of black women and I say boycott at all costs! I find this obession to vilify black women in the last few years interesting, as more and more black women move forward in a positive manner there seems to be the need to address everything we are doing wrong. We really aren't that intimidating are we?

F/F for your comment and for being a fellow Seattleite.

I remember that disgusting article on the Brazil trips. Unbelievable comments from the black men they interviewed: "they know how to treat us right, the women don't make us use condoms, they know how to stroke our egos, etc etc.

Essence magazine -- attempting to chip away at the self esteem of black women one issue at a time.

Most of what you said I agree with EXCEPT "as more and more black women move forward in a positive manner". There have always been black women of positive manner but society have groomed others and even blacks to believe that there are few good black women. Just look at Michelle Obama, with all her success these people still find issues with her. To many other races it's so unbelieveable that two black people can actually have a successful marriage and two wonderful kids. When all across the world and the USA there are thousands of great black families. I've got an entire family filled with awesome black women, friends and people we know. The media and the American society focus on vulgarity to make money. Black women are an easy target because the judases amongst this race continue to sell out their brothers and sisters. No we're not intimidating but we're not easily conformed, that's the problem. Pretendville USA is all about conformity and even then you still won't measure up.

"Essence" is to black equality as "Cosmopolitan" is to true women's liberation.
Selling women fake ideals about beauty and diet and the accumulation of stuff isn't actually helpful to anyone except the people who own the magazine and the companies that make the stuff. So they hired a white guy who is as dumb about Facebook as the average teenager, and he still has a great job, just somewhere else within the comglomerate that doesn't care what color or gender you are so long as you think you're special because you're reading one of their 100 publications and this one happens to be niche-marketed to you.

You have no idea about people these days. The person you were close friends with in high school or college may not be the same person that you knew "back in the day." Religious, political, social, and psychological ideologies grow, change or atrophy. The fact is that many of the people you know, or think you know, can be a detrement to you. (for example, my former pastor that co-officiated my wedding, whom I respected greatly, and who claims to be a man of God, but now posts some of the most hateful, racist (he is white), anti-everything vitriol.

Attempting to stand in the gap

Within the last month I unfriended over 60 people on Facebook. Highschool chums I had not seen since the 10 year reunion - GONE. Former co-workers I haven't seen since I worked there - GONE. College chums I have not seen since I left college - GONE. I'm STILL whittling down. If I don't lay eyes on you at least 4 times a year (for non-relatives) and twice a year (for relatives), I'm unfriending you. I've even unfriended people I see regularly. That friendly person at the gym that I always talk to but only see at the gym, I don't really "know" that person or his/her views/opinion/politics on anything except dieting and working out - GONE.

My one sister and niece live 500 miles away. My sister-in-law lives 200 miles away. My mother-in-law lives 800 miles away. My cousins live 3000 miles away. I do think Facebook serves a good purpose in helping me keep up with simple goings on in the life of my family. But you simply can't be too careful in who you "share" with socially.
It's not enough to keep your FB settings on Private and unsearchable. If you choose to use any online forum to post personal views (including HuffPo comments) you are taking a risk.

THAT SAID - Being able to schedule a print run and do it well doesn't require you to respect the Black people being highlighted in the magazine whose print runs you are overseeing.

I understand why you decided to unfriend people clearly you should not have friended in the first place; but, please let us know how does this comment pertain to the topic. #Iamjustasking....

Actually it has everything to do with this topic. This guy lost his job because someone with access to his "private" facebook decided that his comments were racist.

The article states that the guy had a PRIVATE FB page. That means somone typing the guy's name into a search engine would not automatically view his FB posts. Now if his settings were TRULY set to private that would mean ONLY his friends could see his posts and the posts would even be unviewable to "friends of friends". So if the article is correct someone who he friended on FB was the person who revealed his non public posts. He should have been more careful about his settings or more careful about who he friended OR he should not have used FB to post such personal feelings and opinioms. What about my post did you think lacked a connection to the situatuin being discussed in the article?

No, however, when you work for a African-American magazine was it in Mr. Bullerdick best interest to write such comments on his FB page?

Right?

Also, this gentleman as to realize that although his FB page was set on private one of his "friends" let the public know his true feeling toward African-Americans. Which leads me to conclude that not all his "friends" felt this way.

Right?
