Man Killed With Electric Guitar: Austin Police Charge Peter Andrew Levay With Murder

Peter Andrew Levay
Police in Texas say that Peter Levay killed his neighbor by beating him with an electric guitar.

Unwelcome sexual advances may have prompted a man to beat his neighbor to death with an electric guitar.

Austin police arrested Peter Andrew Levay, 42, on Sunday after his sister notified authorities that Levay may have fatally attacked 64-year-old Maurice Leray Eckert.

Authorities discovered Eckert's body in his apartment around 9:25 a.m. that morning.

“The death was believed to be caused by blunt trauma to the head,” said Austin Police Department Detective Brett Bailey, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Levay's roommate, Lavern Fisher, said that he was drinking with Eckert and Levay before the incident took place.

"He started making sexual advances toward me and him, and they became violent," Fisher told KHOU.

Police also found Eckert's bloody clothes and wallet in Levay's closet. They are considering robbery as another possible motive.

Levay is charged with murder. He is currently being detained at the Travis County Jail on $200,000 bond.

Rick Eckert worked, as a builder, while he lived in my house in Florida. Tom Donovan, with whom I climbed polls at the telephone company in 1965, recommended Rick to me as a good carpenter and a good guy. Tom knew Rick for 31 years.

The characterization of Rick Ecketrt, as an aggressive homosexual, isn't in the ball-park of being correct. Although he was not a homophobe — he worked happily on a job of Tom's with a flamboyant out-gay carpenter for over five years — Rick was a flaming heterosexual, with five kids and a gaggle of grand-kids and gobs of ex-wives and girlfriends.

None of that is proof. None of us, who knew Rick, were in the room when this murder took place, but it is a fact that this accused creep had Rick's bloody wallet in his down-stairs apartment. I'd say that known fact speaks more clearly than the word of a thief who is attempting to manufacture an excuse for murder.

Re-read the article the unwanted sexual advances were made towards Peter Lavay's roommate, Lavern Fisher (which sounds like a female name to me). If this is correct then he had every right to protect Lavern.

In hindsight, Levay probably wishes he had just left. But, since there was alcohol involved, obviously that never occurred to him as an option. I can't help but wonder if Eckert refused to take 'no' for an answer, further provoking Levay... Furthermore, could Fisher have defused the situation? If he didn't try, I'm certain he regrets it.

If unwanted sexual adavances is, indeed, an excuse for murder, then why aren't there a lot more dead men in the singles bars?
