Secret Service Scandal: Peter King Says Three More Employees Out

By KEN THOMAS and LAURIE KELLMAN 04/24/12 06:33 PM ET AP

Secret Service Scandal

WASHINGTON — Three more Secret Service employees have been forced out of the government, bringing to nine the number of people who have lost their jobs in the prostitution scandal roiling the agency. President Barack Obama said the employees at the center of the sordid episode were "knuckleheads," but not representative of the agency that protects his family in the glare of public life.

Two employees have resigned and a third is having his national security clearance revoked, the Secret Service said Tuesday. The employee whose clearance is being revoked can appeal the decision.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said one of the resigning agents stayed at the Hilton hotel in Cartagena, Colombia, where Obama stayed for the Summit of Americas. The others stayed at the nearby Hotel Caribe.

Two others have been cleared of serious misconduct. Last week, six employees, including two supervisors, were forced out and another was cleared of serious wrongdoing. The three who were cleared will still face "appropriate administrative action", the Secret Service said.

The scandal erupted after a fight over payment between a Colombian prostitute and a Secret Service employee spilled into the hallway of the Hotel Caribe. A dozen military personnel have also been implicated and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said this week they have had their security clearances suspended.

Obama acknowledged Tuesday that the scandal was "a little distracting" and pressed for perspective.

"These guys are incredible. They protect me. They protect Michelle. They protect the girls. They protect our officials all around the world," the president said on NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

"A couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from what they do," Obama added. "What these guys were thinking, I don't know. That's why they're not there anymore."

Even as Obama spoke, officials on Capitol Hill were probing for any misconduct in the agency in the past decade and girding for the first public accounting of the incident that embarrassed the Obama administration.

A dozen Secret Service personnel and another 12 military enlistees preparing for Obama's visit to Cartagena have been under investigation for cavorting with prostitutes.

As many as 20 prostitutes were involved with the group, officials say, and none are believed to be underage.

Local law enforcement intervened on the prostitute's behalf during the fight over payment. Paid sex is legal in Cartagena but violates codes of conduct for U.S. personnel who were working there.

In a similar but unrelated incident, Panetta said Tuesday that three Marines on a U.S. Embassy security team and one embassy staff member were punished for allegedly pushing a prostitute out of a car in Brasilia, Brazil, last year after a dispute over payment. Panetta, speaking in Brasilia, said he had "no tolerance for that kind of conduct."

A senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an investigation, said in the wake of the Cartagena scandal the woman involved in the Brasilia incident has hired a lawyer and is suing the embassy. The official said the woman broke her collarbone when she was pushed from the car.

The military investigation into the Cartagena incident is continuing.

The Colombia scandal has been widely denounced by official Washington, but it's a delicate political matter in an election year with the presidency and congressional majorities at stake. All sides have praised Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan's swift action and thorough investigation, in part because he's spent significant time keeping key lawmakers in the loop. Pentagon officials too are investigating and are expected to brief Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin and ranking Republican John McCain on Wednesday.

Even so, at least four congressional committees are investigating on the grounds that letting foreign nationals near U.S. personnel with sensitive information about the president's visit is a national security risk. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is expected to face tough questions Wednesday from the Senate Judiciary Committee on such matters as whether the agency's inspector general has launched an independent investigation.

Another Senate panel is looking for a pattern of misconduct. Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told reporters Tuesday that he'll hold hearings on the service's culture and whether clear rules exist on how agents should behave when they are off duty but on assignment.

"I mean you think they wouldn't need that but maybe they do," Lieberman said. He added that his investigators are taking a longer view and beginning to follow up on tips that "whistle-blower people" have called in. He declined to provide details.

"I want to ask questions about whether there is any other evidence of misconduct by Secret Service agents in the last five or 10 years," Lieberman said. "If so what was done about it, could something have been done to have prevented what happened in Cartagena? And now that it has happened, what do they intend to do?"

Hey Obama was just speading our wealth to hookers!!! Oh thats right it's Bushes fault I'm sorry I forgot?

Obama was not involved. If you believe that this was the first occurrence of this type, you are probably from another planet. The secret service should do an assessment of their conduct for pass presidentential trips to foreign countries. GOD BLESS.

I wonder if they can collect unemployment ? Now I wish he would fire some CEOs and toss some in jail. Let's see....... some profess that the rich create jobs - correct? then how come the rich caused 5+ million people to be unemployed. Seems like an oxymoron to me

The 'rich' didn't cause the unemployment numbers to rise. You really mean small business who do most of the hiring in this country. They had to let a lot odf people go because to keep these people on if Obamacare was gonna cost them more than $11,000 dollars a year per employee. If you were a small business man, tho I assume you're not judging by the tone of your letter, you'd have to let a lotta people go too or be out of business. Get it straight, the Obama policies are at the core of the work loss in this country. Started with Clinton, went thru Bush and was made impossibly worse by Obama. Think about it.

Obamacare hasn't even taken place yet. Maybe you should get it straight. The only policies under Obamacare that have taken place are the ones to stop the discrimination that has been effecting all in this country forever. The rich do not cause unemployment numbers to rise, unless of course you are talking about businesses that refuse to hire Americans while sending jobs to other countries. Or maybe you are talking about the large corporations and business persons that make millions in America but put the brunt of their funds in offshore accounts and or investing in other countries but not in America. Lets give the rich more loop holes and praise them when they send our jobs overseas. After all sooner or later its bound to trickle down to the working man in America. How many years have we heard this. Even when supposedly the economy was flourishing, we were waiting for American companies to provide American jobs to Americans. The more money they made the more they cut back. I worked in corporate for more than 20 years only to watch our company dismantle and send manufacturing out of out country.

As a member of upper management I fared well but too many did not and this was in the 80s. Another 20 years I have been a small business owner. We are all connected. Small business are also dependent on the large wealthy corporations to provide employment and opportunity in this country. That is how it trickles down. I want to know where the trickle is and it is not about Obama. Obama policies have nothing to do at this time with the unemployment with the exception that he could not get through congress the plans deeply needed right now to rebuild our economy and protect our infrastructure. Its not over yet. We are to believe that companies that sit on cash surpluses larger than our deficit lack confidence in our economy, therefore will not hire. Sounds as ridiculous as it is. At to the last reason Romney gave for gas prices saying that the speculators are driving the prices up because they lack confidence. BS Greed is the reason of the season and has been for far too long.

There is nothing political about this.

ALL government agencies are FAT and Out of Control.

They were under Bush too.

We need an immediate 20 % reduction in Federal Employees..........and a new Review policy that culls out the losers and rewards the best of the best.

I think it is time for Rep King (R-NY) to start Congressional Hearings on those Radical Secert Service Agents. Several agents have not shown they believe in the values of what they preach, so they all must be guilty. Start the hearings so that normal citizens can go in and tell horror stories about the Dept of Homeland Security wanting to build offices in their small real American communities, and we all now that the support those extremists.

Although the Secret Service agents were on their own time and engaged in activity which is legal in that country, they are still considered to be on call 24/7 when in a foreign country, especially preparing the way for the President's visit. I am sure this has occurred in the past, but it is evident that the Republican M.O. is to always have a scandal going. The Repubs, Fox News, Huffpost, to name a few, are trying to spin this incident to somehow blame Obama and his administration. Repubs seemed to be more comfortable during the Nazi regime of George Bush, where no vice or action against this country was questioned by them. The comments made against Obama calling his entire administration corrupt because of what a few agents did is the usual irrational Republican knee jerk response. Instead of concern for the safety of this particular President, their comfort zone is trying to hold him accountable for actions of agents which could have ultimately caused him harm. They went after Obama's birth and his education, his religion and it rankles them that Obama's morals and family life are squeaky clean, therefore, this Secret Service scandal is a Godsend to Repubs, who will try to keep this scandal in the headlines until the election to hid what they are doing and will try to do to this country if elected (recreating the 1950s).

This whole thing is silly… and it’s even more silly that it’s being used as a pretext for political mudslinging (in both directions). What Secret Service agents do in their free time is no more Obama’s fault than it would have been Bush’s fault had it happened 6 years ago. That’s like saying it’s a CEO’s fault that one of his factory workers arrived late to work (and, as the example of similar Marine conduct in Brazil mentioned above points out, this kind of stuff happens – it would be naïve to think it’s exclusive to any one Presidency).

Their actions, though during their off-duty time, “violate codes of conduct for U.S. personnel who were working there.” Announcing that you are Secret Service to 1) get more drinks/women or 2) try and intimidate the prostitutes to accept inadequate payment – immature and unprofessional. They put themselves at risk (who better to kidnap, torture, and try to extract secrets from) AND their actions could (and did, in this case) reflect badly upon the country and President.

I’m not the Morality Police and, while I don’t approve of what they did, it’s not our job to judge their ethics. They did, however, violate the rules they agreed to when accepting the job and exacerbated the situation by refusing to pay and causing a scene. They deserve to lose their jobs for violating the Code of Conduct they agreed to follow when they signed on – no more, no less.

"Why would I insult you ,you simply made a comment to express
you opinion and you have that right !!I doubt this is a
conspiracy from the Republicans as too many witness's have come
forward from both parties to prove this really happened !! The
GSA debacle is a documented case of over spending which plays
right into the Democrats mindset of tax and spend carelessly
,so that could not have been a conspiracy !! Things are just
coming out now about the Democrats and Obama because the Left
and their media could only cover so many Faux Pas's and with
the attitudes that this administration has fostered they
believe there is no amount of mistakes they can get away with
and have the Left make their excuses for them !!! Insults are
not the way to find understanding on here ,nor is deleting
posts that violate none of their guidelines !!"

You would think with Al Gore inventing the internet and all, the POTUS could have a teleconference with these people and save the American tax payer some money with all these expensive trips. He wouldent need so many SS agents if he would stay home once in while.

Guess the President of the United States of America regardless of their party should not personally attend a meeting of all the leaders in the Americas. Or perhaps a meeting of leaders of the world in any country. That makes a great deal of sense.

Do you think these guys out of jobs will be getting unemployment? I hope my buck stops there....( should I say before it gets there)...

It will be interesting to find out what caused this embarrassing misconduct among members of the Secret Service. I suspect their heart has really not been in the job since the 2008 election. The Secret Service guys are all about what's best for America. Obama is all about changing America into something it was never meant to be. It has to have an effect on moral ... Ya'think ...

"The Secret Service guys are all about what's best for America. Obama is all about changing America into something it was never meant to be." What the hell are you talking about? Today America is not what it was meant to be. Just what is Obama proposing that would be contrary to the Constitution or Bill of Rights? Women having access to contraceptives and affordable health care is something a great nation should be interested in. Keeping religion out of the government is required by the Constitution. Blowing up something does not take a great deal of courage or honor. Secret Service screwing prostitutes is the way America is today. You say their hearts are not into their job since 2008 because Obama was elected. Then they should have been fired immediately as that would simply mean they are bigots and do not believe in America. Not to protect the President of the United States that was elected by a MAJORITY of Americans would be Treason. America has been changing for the past 12 years and it has not been good. So, no I do not Ya'think.

Ok Now you are saying that lack of morale leads to lack of morals and President Obama is to blame. This behavior most likely has been going on for years wherever prostitution is legal. If the idiot paid the bill none of this would have come out. Great try though, we now have a new excuse for men to behave in an immoral fashion. As for Obama changing America into something it was never meant to be, I see the exact opposite. He is attempting to help America to be everything it was meant to be. Maybe I am getting to old to see clearly but I have never known a man to get horny because his morale is low.
