Verna McClain, Accused Of Shooting Mom And Abducting Newborn, Denied Bond

Verna McClain is escorted from the courtroom after a bond hearing in her case Monday, April 23, 2012 in Conroe, Texas.

CONROE, Texas — Bloody jeans and a handgun believed to be the murder weapon were found in the apartment of a Texas woman accused of kidnapping a newborn boy after fatally shooting his mother, authorities said at a Monday hearing.

Verna McClain, who is accused of shooting Kala Golden outside a suburban Houston pediatric center last week and abducting her 3-day-old son, will remain jailed after a judge denied her bond at the hearing. The boy was later found safe. Investigators believe McClain was desperate for a baby after suffering a miscarriage, and her attorneys have said they planned to review her mental state.

"This was a cold calculated murder, not only meant to deprive Kala Golden of her life but to abduct her child," Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said during the 1 1/2 hour bond hearing.

A detective who testified at the hearing said McClain initially told investigators she had found the baby after it had been left on her doorstep. But authorities say she later confessed.

Defense attorney E. Tay Bond had asked for a bond of $100,000 or less for the 30-year-old nurse, arguing she has no prior criminal history and that witnesses have not positively identified her as being at the shooting scene.

"We of course disagree with (the judge's ruling). We believe she has a constitutional right to a bond," the attorney said after the hearing.

But state District Judge Fred Edwards ruled preliminary evidence supported authorities' claims that McClain was responsible for "the violent death of a young mother" and justified her being held without bond.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Det. John Schmitt had testified that authorities found the jeans and handgun as well as a cell phone and a towel with blood on them in McClain's apartment. The Lexus that witnesses said sped away from the shooting with the infant also was found in front of the apartment. Inside the vehicle, investigators recovered a shell casing similar to ones found at the shooting scene and blood was found on the driver's side door.

McClain did not speak during the hearing. She kept looking down at the floor as she rocked back and forth in her chair and tapped her leg up and down. Bond said McClain continues to mumble and be visibly upset, as she was at a hearing last week.

Her "mental evaluations will be forthcoming," he said.

McClain faces a capital murder charge, which could carry a death sentence. Ligon said his office hasn't decided whether to seek the death penalty. Her attorneys have said she intends to plead not guilty.

The shooting happened last Tuesday outside the Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring, about 25 miles north of Houston, where McClain had taken her three children for checkups. Investigators believe Golden was randomly targeted.

Authorities said 28-year-old Golden was placing her son, Keegan Schuchardt, into her pickup truck when McClain repeatedly shot her, snatched the child and sped off. Golden died at a hospital. But she was first able to give a description of who had shot her and taken her son, Schmitt testified.

After the Lexus was found at a nearby apartment complex, SWAT officers entered McClain's apartment but found no one inside. Schmitt said McClain then approached investigators at the scene, telling them the Lexus was her sister's and she had driven it earlier. McClain later became a suspect when her story kept changing after being asked if she knew where the infant was, Schmitt said.

The infant was found safe with McClain's sister and after McClain was confronted with this, she told investigators that "after returning to the apartment with the Lexus (after running errands), she ... located the baby on the front steps and took the baby" to her sister's house, Schmitt said.

McClain's sister told authorities that McClain informed her she planned to adopt the boy. Investigators said McClain had told her fiance she'd given birth to their child.

McClain was a vocational nurse and had been working for Epic Health Services, a Dallas-based company that provides private duty nursing services for medically fragile children and adults facing chronic illness or catastrophic injuries.

This woman is clearly sick. Im not in any way condoning her actions, but post partum psychosis coupled with grief over the loss of her child could have prompted the attack. This is not a hate crime, it's not at all similar to the Trayvon Martin case, stop being ignorant. This African American woman stole a Caucasian baby and tried to pass it off as her own to her fiance....she clearly does not have full control of her mind. She deserves to pay for her actions, yes, she took a life, but those saying she deserves to be hanged and put in general population, come on. I understand some having an emotional reaction to this case, i as a new mother cant imagine the horror, but emotions can't cloud the facts, and this woman still deserves a fair trial and a fair mental evaluation, and she needs help.

You may call it sickness, but unless she regularly drove around with a loaded gun looking for a pregnant woman to kill so she could still her baby (you know in her everyday normal life)*heavy sarcasm*, then this was obviously premeditated. I hope Texas don't "F" around with this one and I doubt they do, they certainly didn't when it came to arresting her, I hope they go for the death penalty.

It's sad when people do things like this because of an illness, they dont think about what effect it has on others, it's a sickness, she committed a terrible crime and lets hope the doctors never let her out.

Put this woman in General Population and let the punishment fit the crime! Only then will justice be served.

I understand a Horrible crime was committed..but as one who knows Verna personally, there is More to the story than is being told I am sure. How can the media not even check their facts before reporting?? They show a house as where she lives, yet report that her belongings were found in her Apartment?? She has 3 kids not 2 yet they cant get that straight?? Is Anyone Really trying to get down to the Actual truth?? My heart goes out to the victim and family. But Verna has obviouisly had a mental breakdown to do this. The Verna I know is hard working, dedicated, loving, caring person.

SHE SHOT A MOTHER TRYING TO SAVE HER BABY! I Personally think she should be hanged in the public square. She's nothing trash! HONEY, GET BETTER FRIENDS AND STOP ADMITTING TO LIKING KILLERS.

Still doesn't excuse what she did. I hope she gets the maximum. Not only was her victim murdered, but the last few breaths of her life were of her seeing her baby stolen from her.

It proves that she was not in her right mind. She had a normal life before this. One where she worked, took care of her kids, shopped, did laundry...all the things the rest of us do. I know Verna. She had to have had a mental breakdown for this to happen. She is not a person who just decided to kill in cold blood. Even though it seems that way. There is More to the story I am sure!

I'm so tired of hearing people compare this case with the Trayvon Martin case. They are nothing alike, just because both crimes have people of different races as the victim/perpetrator doesn't mean you can compare the two of them. People keep asking where the outrage of this crime is, I don't get why no one understands that the reason for the outrage in the Trayvon case was that Zimmerman wasn't charged for more than a month. This woman was charged right away. If Zimmerman had been charged right away, there wouldn't have been the national attention.

Verna is a dear friend of mine. I of course cannot condone what she did nor can I wrap my head around this in any way. The people that know her are distraught over all this. The Verna we know is a loving caring strong proud woman. None of her family or friends saw this coming. No matter what she is still my friend the woman you see on the News - that is not who we know Verna to be.

Maybe the physiological evaluations will show something. However, something that you need to hear...this is not YOUR fault. You didn't see it coming, and whether that was because of mental illness or some other cause, you are not responsible for the actions of others. You didn't help her do it, didn't hide her desire to do it, it isn't your fault. Try to take care of yourself.

Okay.... great.

I'm a friend until the end for someone, but if they SENSELESSLY murder someone and kidnap their child, well......... that's a deal-breaker baby.

Good luck with your "friendship".. you'll most likely need it.

I guess it's just one of those things that we can't fathom happening to us and won't wish on anybody... If my loving, caring, brother committed a horrific act; I would hate and condemn the act, but my heart would not allow me to hate my brother. It's just difficult for some people to comprehend or accept...

The perp has been arrested. She has been charged accordingly. Justice is being served. Two different case with two very different circumstances. You're trying to push your hate onto a moment where it doesn't fit.

it is a constitutional right to a bond. why she didn't get a bond then? but zimmerman get bond. definitely a corrupt system. black on white crime=hanging. white on black crime=walk FREE. this song like the slavery days to me.
12:13 PM on 04/24/2012
First off, a court can deny bond if the person is being charged with murder or treason or if the court believes they are flight risk. I believe Zimmerman should have been denied bond based on the fact that he was already a flight risk to begin with. I agree with you on questioning then why did he get bonded?

Second, if you are going to play the race card than you need to have your facts correct.
Zimmerman calls himself a hispanic. His father is white and his mother is from Peru so technically Zimmerman can be either. On all his identification, he is a latino male, not white.

If you are judging by skin color that is not correct either. I know plenty of black and hispanic people that have more fair skin than myself.

well, it also depends on the crime too i would hope. getting into a fight and shooting someone, is less heinous than shooting an woman and taking her baby.

well, i don't think her intention was to kill this woman because she was white. she wanted the kid. and i don't think zimmerman shot trayvon because he was black. now, i could be convinced that the police helped him after the shooting because of the race of the victim though.
01:22 PM on 04/24/2012
Wait. The mother who was killed is WHITE? How did the murderer think she was gonna pass off the newborn as her own then?

12:15 PM on 04/24/2012
I am wondering about that as well. I mean, they do get to plead either direction but if she's found guilty and pleaded not guilty doesn't that mean a harsher punishment?
12:56 PM on 04/24/2012
from my experiences with people i've known the answer to that question is yes. i believe the idea is the expense the state goes through in preparation for a trial etc. vs. the person just taking a guilty plea.
