Left Eye

On the 10-year-anniversary of the death of TLC’s Lisa Lopes, mourners are remembering a Grammy-winning artist who shared her talent –- and giving nature –- with the world.

Lisa Lopes -- better known by her stage name, Left Eye -- died on April 25, 2002 in a car crash in Honduras, a place she had made her second home. The rapper had set her sights on eventually developing a medical and educational nonprofit there and at the time of her untimely death, had been volunteering at a child welfare center, according to Entertainment Weekly.

According to People, Left Eye was initially motivated to help out in Honduras after Hurricane Mitch hit in 1998. She then went on to promote literacy programs and bought land to start a children's camp. In her home state of Georgia, the singer often visited children in local hospitals and she had planned to visit a refugee camp in Kenya.

Soon after visiting Honduras for the first time in the late 90s, TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes made the country her second home, according to the Lisa Lopes Foundation. She hoped to one day set up a nonprofit educational and medical center there.

The acclaimed singer also spent a considerable amount of time mentoring budding stars determined to break into the music industry.

"She did so much for us," Sophia Gibson, 19, a member of the quartet Egypt told People. "She was like an angel."

After her tragic death, family members established the Lisa Lopes Foundation to perpetuate her mission to help underprivileged youth and to continue her work in Honduras.

The organization plans to host its first-ever tribute concert in May in Atlanta and proceeds will benefit the foundation.

As family and friends celebrate Left Eye’s life and giving mission, they continue to mourn the star they lost too soon.

“Lisa is our sister. You never get over losing a family member,” TLC’s Chilli said in a press release. “We love her and we miss her and that isn’t ever going to change.”

I hadn't heard about Ms. Lopes foundation and work with children, etc. Why is it that once again God has chosen to take someone to young and so good from us? There is no rhyme or reason for it. Which is why, with my disease, I intend to do whatever the hell I want while I can still walk, talk and type.

Such an awful ending for a girl who had turned her life around and was doing so much good for others. I sincerely hope her spirit inspires other people in her industry who squander their money and their time on trivial things to do something good for others.

I miss TLC......I'm happy to hear that Left Eye was so giving. If God blesses you then help the less fortunate.

I live in Georgia. I wasn't aware that it had officially been changed to Atlanta. Jeez.

Where was it implied that Atlanta was the state? Earlier in the article the author writes, "In her home state of Georgia" and later they mention that the benefit the foundation is holding will be in Atlanta. Did you expect them to be less specific about the location of the event?

Actually, nevermind my other comment. It seems the author has just already corrected the error you noticed earlier.

Not cool to post a photo of the car in which she died in... remembering someone's legacy is about remembering all the good she did in this world and of the talented artist in who she was. Posting that photo is a slap in the face to her family...friends and fans. Absolutely disgusting!

What's disgusting is the fact that she completely disregarded the lives of those she was driving, at a ridiculously high rate of speed, and this is the result. Speed kills. Sad but true. She was 100% responsible for her own death and the injuries of the others. Maybe someone will see that and be impacted by what might happen if you don't pay attention to what you are doing.

In her home state of Atlanta? Honestly?
