Younger Voters Shift From Obama

By PHILIP ELLIOTT   04/25/12 03:17 AM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- Once thought to be solidly behind President Barack Obama, younger voters burdened by a bleak employment picture, high gas prices and student loan debt are being aggressively wooed by the Democrat and his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.

In 2008, Obama had a 34-point advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain among voters under age 30. He won about two-thirds of the vote in that age group.

But a new Harvard poll suggests the president may face a harder sales job with younger voters this time around. Obama led Romney by 12 points among those ages 18-24, according to the survey. Among those in the 25-29 age group, Obama held a 23-point advantage.

It's an opening Republicans hope to exploit by focusing on young people's disillusionment with the candidate who promised "hope" and "change."

"I think young voters in this country have to vote for me if they're really thinking about what's in the best interest of their country and what's in their personal best interest," Romney said Monday in Pennsylvania after announcing his support for an effort Obama is pushing to keep the interest rate on federal student loans from doubling in July. Obama is visiting college campuses in key states this week to rally students around the proposal.

"The president's policies have led to extraordinary statistics. When you look at 50 percent of kids coming out college today can't find a job or can't find a job which is consistent with their skills, how in the world can you be supporting a president that has led to that kind of economy?" Romney said. "I think young people will understand that ours is the party of opportunity and jobs."

While Republicans don't anticipate erasing the Democrats' long-held advantage among the under-30 voter group, they would like to trim it enough to help Romney win the White House.

His aides and advisers have been sharpening a message that assails Obama for an economy that has young people feeling the pinch, too. The Republican National Committee is preparing to launch what it calls the Social Victory Center, which promises to turn the Facebook accounts of supporters into an outreach arm of the party. And Romney's five telegenic sons, none of them younger than 30, are ready to reprise their roles as campaign surrogates.

Obama has spent the past week casting himself as a defender of the middle class and urging Congress to keep the 3.4 percent student loan interest rate from doubling to 6.8 percent in July. He rallied students during visits Tuesday to college campuses in North Carolina and Colorado, to be followed by a stop in Iowa on Wednesday. Obama carried all three states in 2008, and they are considered among several that could help decide November's election.

"When a big chunk of every paycheck goes towards loan debt, that's not just tough on you, that's not just tough for middle-class families, it's not just tough on your parents, it's painful for the economy, because that money is not going to help businesses grow," Obama said at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. "I mean, think about the sooner you can start buying a house, that's good for the housing industry. The sooner you can start up that business, that means you're hiring some folks. That grows the economy."

"And this is something Michelle and I know about firsthand. I just wanted everybody here to understand this is not ... I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this. Michelle and I, we've been in your shoes."

Despite attempts to relate to college audiences by opening up about his and his wife's experiences with student loans, polling suggests Obama's job approval rating among these voters has declined. The 75 percent rating he enjoyed in 2009, the year he took office, has dropped to 57 percent, according to Gallup.

That opens the door for Romney and the Republican Party.

Consider North Carolina. Obama won it by fewer than 14,000 votes, making him the first Democrat to carry the state since 1976.

Rick Wiley, the RNC's political director, said Democrats pulled off that victory by registering "a boatload of college kids." But fast forward four years and "those college kids are not going to be there. They're not on campuses anymore. They're probably under-employed," he said.

As a result, Democrats and Republicans alike have to court a new class of college-age voters this election cycle, not just in traditional GOP states like North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana that helped push Obama to victory in 2008, but across the country.

"It's time for a change, and a lot of young voters I've seen are losing faith in Obama," said Maggie Cleary, head of the Washington, D.C., Students for Romney chapter and president of Georgetown University College Republicans. "The biggest challenge we're going to have is exciting people about Gov. Romney. ... They don't know a lot about him other than that he's quote, unquote boring."

That's one reason why Romney's advisers and the RNC want to turn the election into a vote against Obama, and not necessarily into a vote for Romney.

Paul Conway, a former chief of staff to former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, said the "new normal" for college students and 20-somethings is a series of part-time jobs or unpaid internships.

"These are the people who are feeling the impact of the policies," said Conway, who runs Generation Opportunity, a nonpartisan group created to encourage young people to vote. "They believe Washington is mortgaging their future. They're watching Washington put them further in to debt."

The last Republican presidential candidate to win voters under age 30 was Republican George H.W. Bush. He won 52 percent of those voters on his way to defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis in 1988.

Obama should learn from the Atty Gen race in Ore - the Med Marj coalition went and got the vote out - 80 % of Americans approve of Med Marj - all he has to do is reschedule to a level II - look at the NY State Supreme Court Judge's op-ed in the NY Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/opinion/a-judges-plea-for-medical-marijuana.html?pagewanted=print - Obama is going to lose this election without the youth vote - the Med Marj situation will energize those with Parents, Grandparents, family, friends, etc... with medical conditions that could benefit - Obama, be warned !

This election is 1980 all over again. Carter was elected in 1976 on a hopey changey message after an unpopular President just like obama. Carter was a total failure whose policies and those of the dumocrud party caused much economic misery, just like today. I voted for Carter as a college student because I was fooled by the hopey changey. That is the last democrud I will ever vote for. democrud economic policies destroy the economy. It took Ronald Reagan to bring the economy back then and it will take a Republican to bring the economy back now. I see a lot of potential Reagan greatness in Romney. Vote for real hope and change.

Obama is an idiot, he thinks his desires will overcome young voters realities. I have two sons, one has graduated from college and is continuing into medical school. He will not vote for Obama because his future is in doubt because of government controlled health care. He fears that he will never be able to repay medical school and is thinking of giving up the dream of becoming a doctor to pursue nursing so that he can start earning now instead of going deeper into debt and not knowing the future. My youngest is on track to be a Nurse Practitioner and is also thinking of dumping that in favor of money now to help repay his student loans. The youngest is a typical young guy, believes that everything will be all right. But he has hundreds of friends that graduated last year and are working in places like McDonalds, WalMart and other huge corporations for little, and no where near enough to live and pay off loans. If this is Obamas America - we are fortunate that it will be someone else's America after November of this year.

The young voters' realities will be horribly worse if Mitt the flip-flopper wins. But then, many in this young generation haven't a clue that Regressives have voted NO on everything Obama has tried to do.
10:16 AM on 05/13/2012
That really doesn't matter.  For the 1st 2 years Obama had 100% control...A simple majority that is all that is required in the House and a filibuster proof 60 seats in the Senate.  The funny thing is, you blame Republicans, while the Democratic controlled Senate has never even presented a budget.  Blame Republicans all you want, your guy is a failure, your party can't accomplish anything that helps so I guess blame and fear is all you have left.  Needless to say, Obama has lost the massive majority in the young vote and is likely a one term President because of his and your parties failures.

RONPAUL2012! I used to support Obama, and I think he means well, at least, I'll give him the benefit of doubt. But to pass two bills that are a direct assault to our constitution. Well, that's just doesn't not work for me. Also, breaking all the promises that he has, like bringing the troops home after 6 months in office "You can take that to the bank!" and then NOT bringing them home. And now, playing the hypocrite role on Same sex marriage? No thank you. I'll stick with someone that doesn't play sides for votes. RON PAUL.

Young people may be disillusioned with Obama, because of all those broken promises, but most of the stupid and destructive policies he promised to change were put there by the Republicans. Young voters need to be aware that if the Republicans regain as much control as they had under Bush, things will get a lot worse, very quickly. We have the unfortunate choice of slow decline under the Democrats, or a high speed toboggan ride to Hell under the Republicans. That's the way it is, take your pick.

The republicans are whistling past the graveyard. They not only have to shave off support from the youth, but women, latinos, blacks, any other minority to win. No way , no how.

Too bad your parrot talk isn't getting thru to the Republicans in the Senate who don't care if student loan interest rates DOUBLE. Don't assume a poll, especially one THIS early is one on the can for Robotney. Obama will still crush Romney in this demographic. When these intelligent voters look to the REASON why nothing is getting done, they won't have to look hard. Obstructionist republicans more interested on obeying the Koch Bros than the voters.

Those are the same people in the Senate that attempted to raise taxes on the middle class (via voting against the payroll tax extension), that railed against Obama bailing out GM and Chrylser and insisted on tax breaks taking up 40% of the stimulus that was supposed to create jobs, that voted against equal pay protection for women and are making it more difficult for the college students, elderly and minorities to vote and were against keeping the interest rate on their student loans from doubling. I think they will be able to figure out who is attempting to protect their interes

As a high school junior who has been involved in civic affairs since the age of ten and spent the three and a half years from December of 2007 to April of 2011 working for the Democratic Party before experimenting with GOP politics for a year and finding it utterly despicable, I can assure all progressives out there that based on not only my observations as a civic-minded youth but also my observations of the ideologies of my peers, the majority of first-time voters will find it impossible to support Romney due to his radical positions of social issues such as women's health and economic issues such as college aid, all of which greatly and directly affect the lives and livelihoods of at least a substantial portion of my peers.

I have a hard time believing that young college voters are turning from Obama. Obama is the only one that got their back. Romney and the republicans already said they will be getting rid of the Dept of Education. Romney also told college kids that the best thing for them to do is not go so long in college, cut your college years. Romney has his money, do they really think he will give them jobs and money to further their education? Don't be fooled my young people. Romney cares less about you and just as less for the seniors, minorities, poor, middleclass, hispanics, workers. He only cares about making more money to put in his swedish accounts. This man is about cutting jobs and not making them.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, the article states:

"In 2008, Obama had a 34-point advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain among voters under age 30. He won about two-thirds of the vote in that age group."

That's a 34 points, right...then the article states as a comparison:

"But a new Harvard poll suggests the president may face a harder sales job with younger voters this time around. Obama led Romney by 12 points among those ages 18-24, according to the survey. Among those in the 25-29 age group, Obama held a 23-point advantage."

I am now adding the 12 points advantage to the 23 point advantage, that equals out to a 35 point advantage in current polling, compared to a 34 point advantage in 2008, the headline screams, Younger Voters Shift From Obama.....WHAT THE WHAT!!!
06:58 PM on 05/04/2012
Dude, I'm guessing math wasn't your strong suit in high school. Obama's 12 and 23 points lead, equals an average of 17,5% (assuming both age groups are roughly of equal size), about half the lead he had over McCain.

Republicans (or whatever label they want to hide under) are spending so much money hiring FAKE supporters, bloggers, posters, bus loads of protesters, robo-calls, negative ads that tell flat out lies. Its pathetic. Any American that doesnt do their own research to figure out who has their interests at heart and not some mysterious corporate donor...deserves to have all the "GREAT AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS' that made this country great taken away. They deserve to have their voting rights taken away by "emergency management laws". To lose the RIGHT of a postal service. The voice to be heard regardless of how much money you have. The right to not have corporations defined as "people" which interfere with policy and legislature. To lose The EPA and other essential environmental agencies that keep corporations from poisoning and killing us all for the almighty dollar. The safety nets of Medicaid, Medicare, Pensions and healthcare that your great grandparents, grand parents, and parents had. The right to an education regardless of your income. The supporters of the Republican party have to be either very evil...or just plain stupid!

I see it in the reverse.
I propose that;
If you join the military at 18, you are granted the right to vote.
If not, you have to wait until 21 to cast a ballot...since society has concluded that you are inept at making responsible decisions for yourself anyway.
Irreconcilable in my opinion.

Even "young" voters aren't dumb. Over the last 3+ years, they've learned that Obama and his minions are little more than a "marketing ploy" with virtually no substance behind it. Those young voters made the mistake of helping put a "shell" (think empty egg shell as an illustration) in the White House once, it is doubtful that they are going to be so completely deceived again and let him stay there. The "shell" of Obama is cracking, and Humpty Dumpty isn't going to be put back together again.

I have another theory;

In this age of "entitlements", even Obama has not been able to "provide" adequately to people's expectations.

And that leads to resentment.

I could be wrong.

(for the record...I don't expect Obama, nor any President, to provide for me)

Be well.
