'Grey's Anatomy' Main Character Death On Season Finale: Update From Shonda Rhimes

A Main Character Will Die On 'Grey's Anatomy'

If fans of "Grey's Anatomy" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC) were thinking Seattle Grace would be saying goodbye to a guest star, it may be time to prepare for a more tearful finale.

After telling TV Guide Magazine that a lot of the writers were crying and that there were "really shocking, horrible moments" in the upcoming Season 8 finale, creator Shonda Rhimes has now confirmed that it's a main character who will.

"We're not talking [about] some guest star [who] is going to come in and die kind of thing; it's a a big death and it's fairly shocking," Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was hard, it was hard to write, it was hard to listen to at the table read. When one of your main characters dies, it always affects the heart and soul of the hospital."

With both Ellen Pompeo (Meredith) and Patrick Dempsey (Derek)'s contracts ending with Season 8, there is a bit of speculation that one of them is on their way out.
