There's been a lot of talk these last couple of weeks about "hipster racism" or "ironic racism"--or, as I like to call it, racism. It's, you know, introducing your black friend as "my black friend"--as a joke!!!--to show everybody how totally not preoccupied you are with your black friend's blackness. It's the gentler, more clueless, and more insidious cousin of a hick in a hood; the domain of educated, middle-class white people (like me--to be clear, I am one of those) who believe that not wanting to be racist makes it okay for them to be totally racist. "But I went to college -- I can't be racist!" Turns out, you can.

This can be handled quite easily. There is a time and place for everything.

Who knew old fashioned skills at cussing people out could come in handy in our modern times? I guarantee you none of these folks have ever had an old fashioned full fledged cussing out.

Such a cussing out should be part of each incident of this nonsense. It would go out of vogue quickly. There is no appearing cute nor innocent when you are getting cussed out.

I didn't realize it had a name. Hipster Racism? I see this with alot of my employees. They will say something racist and then the immediate response when I call them on it is "My best friend forever is Black!" I think this is the exact type of thing that got John Mayer in trouble in that magazine article a while back...a cavalier attitude that he was above it all.

The story is weird and sounds like it was written by a nine year old. It's human nature to notice what other people look like and flock together with "your own kind." All people tend to do this. Instead of denying the fact that all of us try to identify each person we meet according to race, let's just accept it and move on.

A color-blind society is a must on the legal level but is a fantasy on a personal level. A "color-noticing but don't care" society would be good. Making jokes about your friend's race in a "cute" way is not cute and only shows you are seeing them as a race and not a person.

Oh lord I see this nonsense in Seattle aaaaalllllll the time, it would be too funny if it wasn't so pathetic, it's just a new young breed of white people (and sometimes asians) wanting to be racist without being called out. Only a house slave falls inline for it, I love to call them out the shocked look on their faces is classic!
