I am sorry to hear that after 17 years of a committed relationship than marriage that they have decided to separate and divorce. I can only imagine the strains that a celebrity marriage can bring. It's usually a situation of being pulled in too many directions, by too many people with too many stresses. While the initial press release read well with the priority on the children and a divorce with dignity it may still be a little early to tell which direction ultimately they will go. With good collaborative divorce attorneys and good advisers they might still make this happen. Lets hope so for the sake of the children they make this happen. At minimum, I hope the attorneys keep the divorce settlement confidential. Something that I am surprised more attorneys don't do for their high profile clients. Difficult, because courts rarely seal records but we know how and teach attorneys and/or their clients how to keep this information confidential. Retired law enforcement officer 24 years. Marriage changes the playing field in a peoples' minds.
Not quite sure how a piece of paper can change the perspective so much.
Together for fifteen but only married for two.
Go figure.

Sometime people just grow apart. When we get married we never know if it will last, we take a chance and hope the love to grow stronger day by day sometime it does and sometime it doesn't.
04:54 PM on 04/27/2012
Love shouldn't have to grow, it should already be there and maintained because if you marry someone and believe you will grow to love them thats not marriage, that's a business partnership.

Not everyone is looking for love -- ESPECIALLY those in H'wood.

Many are looking for PUBLICITY & marriage is simply a career move.
Many women in say, Palm Beach, are looking for $$.
Many are looking to break into "society."
Some folks are even looking for Green Cards.
It was widly reported that NBAer Rick Fox was looking for a way to break into Hollywood.
Some men are even looking for "sugar mommas."

As Tina Turner so famously said: "What's Love Got To Do With It"?

Sorry to have to break all of this to you.

It's simple like my friend told me "You don't want to own her, just rent her", if Martin were to marry again, he shouldn't live in the same house with his new wife, "Familiarity breeds contempt".

Why? Because they're both black men? Why don't you reference Phil Spector, Charlie Sheen, David Hasselhoff or Mel Gibson? Some would say they were infinitely worse. Ask yourself why does your mind instantly look for negative references of another black man to associate this situation with. Just make it bad men, period.

Why is it that people who date for eternity, call it quits right after they get married? A friend of mine dated her high school sweetheart for seventeen yrs and then they got married and it lasted 7mths!

It's an issue of the "Limbic System." When two people date, they're essentially re-writing each others limbic systems; they're still in the "selling and advertising" phase of the relationship. When those same two people marry, regardless of how long they dated, they are hoping to close the deal by experiencing that something so utterly transcendent; so utterly otherworldly. That when the transcendent otherworldliness doesn't occur, they and their relationship suffer immeasurably. And that suffering is oft times, destructive and resurfacing.
