FDA Approves Vivus's Fast-Acting Viagra Rival

Vivus Viagra Rival

By Bill Berkrot

NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters) - Men with erectile dysfunction may not have to plan for sex as far in advance anymore after Vivus Inc won U.S. approval for avanafil, its faster acting rival to Viagra.

Avanafil, which will be sold under the brand name Stendra, is the first new drug in the category in a decade.

The drug -- which will compete with Pfizer Inc's Viagra, Eli Lilly's Cialis and Levitra, sold by GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer -- gives Vivus, which has struggled to bring a weight loss drug to market, a potentially lucrative commercial product.

The Vivus drug will have some attractive marketing claims as it goes up against established rivals sold by companies with serious marketing muscle.

"This is potentially the fastest acting of the four," said Dr Wayne Hellstrom, professor of urology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

While it is recommended that patients take the new pill 30 minutes prior to sexual activity, in clinical trials it has been shown to work in as fast as 15 minutes. Viagra typically takes about an hour to start working.

Stendra belongs to the same PDE5 inhibitor class as its rivals and also works by increasing blood flow to the penis. But researchers found it to be more selective than the older drugs, meaning it could have fewer unintended effects.

"Higher selectivity should translate into fewer side effects," said Hellstrom. "It's going to add more excitement" to the field.

ED afflicts as many as 30 million men in the U.S., Vivus said. The Vivus drug is currently awaiting a European approval decision.

Cowen and Co analyst Simos Simeonidis, in a research note, forecast annual Stendra sales of about $300 million. Viagra had sales of about $2 billion in 2011.

Vivus shares were up about 3 percent following the expected approval by the Food and Drug Administration. Investors are far more focused on the prospects for Vivus's obesity pill Qnexa, for which the FDA is expected to rule by mid July.

Doctors should prescribe the lowest dose of Stendra that provides benefit, the FDA said. It has been approved at doses of 50 milligrams, 100 mg and 200 mg.

"This approval expands the available treatment options to men experiencing erectile dysfunction, and enables patients, in consultation with their doctor, to choose the most appropriate treatment for their needs," Victoria Kusiak, deputy director of the Office of Drug Evaluation in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

The most common side effects reported in clinical studies included headache, flushing of the face and other areas, nasal congestion, common cold-like symptoms and back pain.

The drug carries the same cautions as its rivals, including that it should not be used by men who also take nitrates due to the potential for a sudden dangerous drop in blood pressure and the now famous warning to see a doctor if an erection lasts more than four hours.

Vivus shares, which closed up 2.9 percent at $25.15 on Nasdaq, rose to $25.40 in after hours trading. (Additional reporting by David Morgan in Washington; editing by Dave Zimmerman and M.D. Golan)

I suppose insurance will pay for THIS without question.

Sorry to break your bubble, but insurance does not pay for any of this for men. Unlike your BC pills.

Many insurance policies pay for Viagra and Cialis and Levitra. My insurance policy is one that will pay for ED medication should I want it...don't make up things in an effort to promote your bias...

90% of insurances pay for ED meds.

Most insurance that I've had will not even pay for hormone therapy for men that need it. They won't even pay for the test that will determine if it is needed. I think they should cover this as well as any other medically related issues for both men and women.

ED drugs are more about mental health. We are as good as our sexual performance in many cultures. Try keeping a girlfriend or getting one with bad sex, Good luck. You're a one and done. It's even a valid reason for divorce.

Oh boy! Another ED drug. More ED commercials. More dudes singing something like "Vivaaaaaa Viagra."

People can't get insurance or go to the doctor and big pharma is worried about impotent old men. Speaks volumes.

ED drugs are a ruse, but a great money maker for the drug companies. As long, no pun intended, as men think they need to be more manly they will seek these drugs. In reality if they would quit smoking, take care of their bodies, manage their HBP, manage their diabetes, and exercise there would be a whole lot less need for ED drugs. I also find it ironic at how many men that can achieve an erection still ask for these drugs thinking it will only enhance their prowess.
12:44 AM on 04/28/2012
Ummm...I eat right, exercise daily, don't have diabetes, and I don't smoke and still have erectile dysfunction. Even if I didn't have it, ED drugs work and they work damn good. I tell people its the difference between good sex and great sex. Try it, your woman will thank you...if you have a woman. If you're wondering how I got ED, cause I'm a lady getter. I've been laid by many women so I'm used to having sex...because the man downstairs doesn't like to come on command doesn't mean I'm not horny and don't want to have sex. So it does enhance sex greatly...period. So until you try it, don't knock it. I think all men should take it past their thirties. There may be less divorces. I know girls that prefer their men to take it. I guess you don't talk to a lot of women. Sucks for you dude.

Those drugs, as are most of them, have negative affects on the heart, but I guess if getting laid is at the top of your list, it doesn't matter what the heart needs. Another blatant testament from an egotistical, selfish and narcissistic man. I hope you use condoms for everyone's sake. Happy hunting.
10:00 AM on 04/30/2012
Since your sexual prowess is all you can think of, go ahead and take those ED drugs. And since you have so many women I hope you are practicing safe sex, as it sounds like you may be playing Russian roulette with HIV, syphilis, GC, chlamydia, and herpes-the gift that keeps on giving. It does sound like the little man downstairs does your thinking.

huh? if they developed a CURE (not management treatment) for cancer then yes, i would agree...more ed drugs just fuel the reality show culture...

Just to let you know, I have a really good friend who's husband is a cancer research doctor at a major cancer research company and I got her to admit that they have the cures for AIDS, Diabetes, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, and Testicular Cancer, among a few others. We are being told lies...for real! There's no money in the cure, only suppression. I've talked to the doctor personally, this is TRUE! That's why I laugh when I see all these walks for cancer cause I already the cure is out there. You think Magic Johnson would still be alive 20 years with AIDS? Come on now! He paid for the cure and probably keeps it hush hush. We keep pumping money into nothing while all anyone gets in return is a pink ribbon...very sad! Population control at it's finest!
