Venazi Luna, Walmart Employee, Circulating Petition Demanding CEO Step Down

April 27 (Reuters) - A deli manager at a Walmart store has started an online petition calling for the resignations of the retailer's chairman and chief executive officer in the wake of allegations that top management squelched an internal probe into bribery allegations.

Venazi Luna, who works at the Walmart in Pico Rivera, California, near Los Angeles, started the petition on Thursday and had more than 4,300 signatures as of Friday afternoon. Luna, who has worked at Walmart for seven years, said she wanted to get 10,000 online signatures or more.

The petition calls for the resignation of Wal-Mart Stores Inc Chairman S. Robson Walton and CEO Mike Duke as well as for "a thorough and independent investigation by a highly-respected external organization."

In an interview, Luna said that after she got the signatures, she wanted to bring the petition to Wal-Mart's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, to show management that this was what employees wanted.

"Nobody should get away with bribery, and they should be held accountable for that," Luna said.

Luna, who is from Mexico, is a member of an employee group called Organization United for Respect at Walmart, or OUR Walmart, a group aimed at improving conditions for the retailer's workers.

The New York Times reported last week that Wal-Mart's Mexican subsidiary, Wal-Mart de Mexico (Walmex) made suspect payments totaling $24 million last decade to expand rapidly in the country, where it is the biggest retailer.

The Times also said that top executives had squelched an internal investigation into the probe. Duke, who became head of Wal-Mart's international business in 2005, was one of the executives who were aware of the situation, the report said.

A Wal-Mart spokesman declined to comment on the petition. The company this week disclosed a group of high-profile lawyers and accountants it has brought in to help with an internal investigation into the matter.

The demands in the petition mirror those called for on Wednesday by Joe Hansen, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.

A UFCW spokeswoman said Luna reached out to the union for help on the petition, which is mentioned on its website.

Wal-Mart is facing a criminal probe by the U.S. Department of Justice over potential violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, a U.S. law that forbids bribery of foreign officials.

The Mexican attorney general's office has launched a preliminary investigation into whether the retailer bribed officials to expand its business, and Mexico's comptroller's office has also said it would look into the bribery reports.

Wal-Mart shares were up 7 cents at $59.02 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock is down about 5.5 percent this week, but has recovered some after being down 8.2 percent earlier in the week.

Really? All Big Business is illegal in some form or fashion. To get to the top you must play by the rules---and the rules are 'illegal' to use a word. So, lets close all big businesses starting with our Government haha---Anyone who 'claims' they are fighting for the social good, are actually fighting for their own ego boost. When one 'fights against something' one eventually becomes that very thing they are 'fighting against.' She is not a nice person---not to say--Walmart is nice--and yes, one should stand by one's beliefs and want what is best for all, yet, doesnt that begin in one's own backyard? This person is not what they claim to be, and how 'nice' is her backyard? haha Just stating my pov. (backyard meaning-her personal self within)

I think the CEO just gave the greenlight to the employees to follow his example.

Soon to be ex-employee lol. One of Sam Walton's sons won't resign from his father's company, and that CEO is so well insulated politically nothing will happen, except they will find a way to fire her and the people that signed the petition.

Why reward Walmart for continuing it's pattern of bad behavior? Stop shopping there and they'll get the message. You don't need Walmart. Walmart needs you.
02:28 PM on 04/28/2012
I have not shopped at WalMart in years, and I am here to say I have survived. We do not need them, and I totally agree with you that the only way to send a message is to not shop there.

WE HAVE HERE IS AN EMPLOYEE THAT IS SOME WAY OR ANOTHER CONNECTED TO........ "UNITED FOOD AND COMMERICAL WORKERS INTERNATIONAL UNION"..........

ANYTIME THERE IS A UNION NEAR OR WATCHING A COMPANY YOU KNOW THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS.....UNIONS DO NOTHING BUT DESTROY COMPANYS AND OF COARSE THEY WOULD LOVE TO GET INTO MALMARTS SHORTS.....

THIS IS SO SAD, THE TATICS THE UNIONS USE TO TRY TO GET INTO COMPANIES AND THEN THE WAY THEY DESTROY THEM.....UNIONS SHOULD BE OUT-LAWED.

That's just totally off point. These people are trying to hold them accountable for bribery and fraud. Your anti-union rant is just that. Nonsense.

Go to WalMart and find one product for sale that was produced in a union shop. You won't find one, because everything in the store was made in a country that does not allow unions but does allow sweat shops.

What happened to taking responsibility for one's behavior. How come these guys get a golden parachute instead of a murky prison cell for supporting illegal activities? Money and power talk!

Here's a Walmart employee that will not be working there soon. Oh, as an aside, I feel that they all(Walmart's board of directors) should be dismissed and stranded on a remote island with only enough food and water to "just get by" and have no hope of rescue. Maybe then they could have an inkling of what most their employees go through in their daily lives.

Ms. Luna is a very brave individual for willing to stand up to these unethical criminals. Amazingly there are some TROLLS on this post who think that she should be fired and apparently see nothing wrong with the criminal actvity. But what do you expect from the t-baggers. SAuppoerting the corporate thugs over the American worker! SHAME

walmart does NOT operate within the law. they acknowledge it and pay the fines. it is cheaper to pay the fines then follow the law. for example....walmart hires illegals. walmart routinely gets caught, pays a couple hundred thousand in fines and hires more illegals to replace the ones who get deported. simple mathemetics. the system is wrong. the illegals work for non livable wages, get sent back to mexico, have to cross the border again, risking life and limb to get back here to walmart to start all over. RIDICULOUS.

1000% agree. Walmart is representative of everything that is wrong in America today. We have to stop looking at price only and see the whole cost of our greed!

Like our enviorment, if we do not respect and protect it will not last.

Indeed, if we all paid more for the things we really NEED, and demand they are made in AMERICA, by AMERICAN WORKERS paid a LIVING WAGE, then our economy wouldn't be in the toilet that it is currently in.....

We don't have to watch them close the stores, just stop shopping there. If people will stop shopping there, they will all close in time.

Can we all say so long WALMART

I truly believe a little payola comes into play in a lot of areas, and I don't think for 1 minute that Walmart is the only one paying it. And I think that Venazi Luna should mind her own business, who sounds like a trouble maker, and leave our CEO's alone.

Makes you wonder about someone that would refer to the Wal Mart ceo as "their" ceo.
11:18 PM on 04/27/2012
I am trying to figure out why it is illegal for WalMart or any other company for that matter to bribe a Mexican official. I certainly can understand why it is against Mexican law, but why is it against American law? Isn't that imposing our values on another country with a different culture? Isn't that something that liberals never want to do?

To go a step further, unfortunately it is an unethical business.
I don't understand why people haven't listened to the facts presented about how this company coerces suppliers into providing cheaper (and I do mean cheap not inexpensive) versions of product so that it looks like people are buying the same thing for less when in reality it is less for less.
